Panthers announce they've rescinded the franchise tag from Josh Norman. He's a free agent. Holy...
Of the big money around the league has been spent. Giant are still in good shape but I think he will be a bargain relative to the signings at the beginning of FA.
seriously maybe there is an impending suspension or legal matter, it really seems like a dick move by the Panthers to rescind the tag this far into free agency.

Unless I'm missing something.
That's my initial thought also -- suspension or legal issues pending. I guess we will find out soon.

"After a number of conversations with Josh's agent we realized that a long-term deal was not attainable," general manager Dave Gettleman said. "We have decided to rescind the franchise tag freeing Josh to immediately become a UFA. We thank Josh for all his contributions and truly wish him well."

Maybe he wants to be the highest paid CB or defensive player in the league?
Totally agree. Think he's one of the most over rated players out there now. Now that doesn't mean he isn't a very good CB but this best in the NFL stuff in his mind is an issue. That D is loaded. He benefited a ton form that from 7. And IMO Davis and Keuchly might be two of the 5 best LBs in the NFL. Sure want to keep good starters but over laying hat dude 10 mil per year long term would be a mistake IMO for a long term deal. Also ugh redux
I don't see though how this helps Carolina on the field in 2016. As a team looking to repeat as NFC Champions.
If you can't come to a long-term deal, so what, you pay the guy for one season and you're done with him and maybe get a comp pick the next year if he signs a mega-deal elsewhere - as high as a 3rd round pick depending on your own teams signings.
the next player on their depth chart I'm pretty sure is a big drop-off from Norman.
because their front 7 can protect him and they have the cap space. He will take a discount to go to a team like Cincy that has a good defense. Maybe the Bucs too.
might be a whole different ballgame if they were team mates but he is looking for 15-16m per, revis is 14 and he is on a different league to norman so it would be the $$$ not anything to do with his feud with OBJ that'll sink that could price himself right out the nfl he isnt worth the price hes demanding by a long way
Wouldn't they have to sign him first before trading him?
I could be mistaken, but when you put a non-exclusive Franchise Tag on a player, you don't have to sign him. Another team can match the offer and you'd lose him, but they'd have to give up a 1st round pick.

That's how I understood it, anyway.
You're right, it was the non-exclusive tag. But would it cost one first-round pick or two?

Might be two. I'm hazy on it, but that would give them even more leverage to hold on. They get squat now.
He won't make as much this season had he signed it. He could've proved his value this year and got a huge deal now I don't think he's worth a Janoris Jenkins deal, I like Jenkins better, he did as much or more than Norman with a hell of a lot less

i don't think you understand how NFL contracts work.
his option with the Panthers was to sign a 14mil one year deal. yes its 14 guaranteed. but after the season, if he makes it thru it, he's a year older and the age factor becomes a real conversation
he can sign with another team right now for 12-13mil a year, get a 10mil signing bonus and get 20+ million guaranteed
Who played outside/behind one of the top 3 front sevens in the league last season. A season that also happened to be both his contract year and the only outstanding full season performance of his career.
Someone is going to be paying a ton of money for a future case of buyers remorse.
CAR. Did not see a deal working out & feel he not worth it.
Reports say he wants "revis money" & is not close to a good.
IIRC many players in league have said he is overrated & always " needed safety help".
Looks like Panthers feel the same way.
Addition by subtraction; why deal with his antics & ego for years. Just a month ago he called himself top 5 all time.
The man is nuts.
Because he isn't worth the ridiculous money he's asking for. Overrated player. You don't over pay for overrated. Replace him and use the money a better way.
Smart move by CAR. They have a talents defense and won't miss the guy.
Keep in mind that he turned 25 his rookie year. He sucked that year (remember Barden owning him on national TV?), and had his second season mostly wiped out by injuries. He was very good in 2015-16, but nobody knows whether he could sustain that level behind a lesser front seven.
I can understand why he and his agent played hardball. If he had played 2016 under the tag - aside from the obvious injury and performance risks that apply to any tagged player - his first shot at free agency would have come in the year he turns 30. And by the same token, I can see why the Panthers were reluctant to meet his demands.
While the outcome isn't ideal for either side, it does follow a certain logic. Paying Norman a boatload of guaranteed money didn't make sense for Carolina, while Norman can reasonably expect that another team will be more willing to do it now than in March 2017.
forced the Panthers to make a decision here. He's been chirping the last few weeks about not attending offseason workouts or minicamp because he technically isn't under contract. He keeps talking about being the best CB in the game and an all-time great. He keeps yapping about being the key guy for the Panthers, and for some strange reason, he keeps yapping about Beckham, even bringing him up again last week.
Gettleman pretty much is fed up with Norman and realizes that he's more of a system player than one worth top pay and he's made his move to show him that. Local reports are pretty much calling this Gettlemen's way of shutting Norman up.
Now yeah, I doubt they consider him, but they might have before signing Jenkins.
We've got the cap space, it's a no brainer.
The Panthers are gonna make a statement soon, I think.

Maybe we can draft our slot corner?

My thoughts exactly
amazing move by Gettleman

100%
Did you even both to read Torn Tendon's post?!?!

A cover 2 guy should have a good QBR against. He gets to jump all routes otherwise he has help over the top.
I could see him as a perfect fit in Pittsburgh...
He's a player that excels in a specific scheme (hello Namdi Asomougha!).
amazing move by Gettleman

Lol.. my first thought as well. Use the old Obrien failed physical trickaroo

This seriously could set a very dangerous precedence for the players.

easy to combat, sign the tender early.
Great point
Jenkins and DRC will be why its not happening.
Very little. And Dallas and Skins even tighter.
This.
An old AJ Smith type move.

So Beckham can get suspended again?

But I hope to God he goes to a team we play against next season.

So that he can light him up.. which I have no doubts he'd do if he got another shot at him.

Agreed. Damn shame Beckham could hold onto that perfectly thrown TD pass. Norman was lost on that play.
if you believe he is a young Revis, you pay.
He wanted to be PAID in Carolina. How'd that turn out? :)
i don't think you understand how NFL contracts work.

to me, he's winning in the scenario

from a player perspective, it turned out fine. but you really can't judge the move yet until we see his next deal.
staying with the panthers wasnt gonna guarantee him another superbowl berth (history shows us that).
Colored?
lol - very good

yep, that's how it goes.
Sean Smith AND Josh Norman? Geez. I don't know how many teams would be better on paper.
I think he goes to either the 49ers, the Buccaneers or the Ravens. Just a hunch.

You hear rumors all the time, but I have heard teammates do not like him at all. The money can make it convenient to move on.
