Brandon Jacobs 4th and 1, SB 42

BNY Giants Club : 4/23/2016 12:35 am
Was this the most nerve-wracking play of the game for you? I live in Pats country and obviously everyone here talks about the Tyree play and the Asante Samuel missed INT but I feel like the Jacobs 2 yd gain on 4th and 1 is the forgotten play on that drive. (Not by us).
Yeah, when you consider
BlackLight : 4/23/2016 1:30 am : link
that even with The Largest Running Back In Captivity on our roster, short yardage was never a sure thing.
I completely
Giantophile : 4/23/2016 2:15 am : link
agree with this. He barely got it, I was convinced he was going to get stuffed at the time and my goodness looking back think about how much could/would be different if not for that extra foot or two.

For some reason I always think of that moment as the most intense part of that game.
That entire 4th Q
mrvax : 4/23/2016 2:54 am : link
had me on near heart attack mode. There were times when I actually had to leave the room for a few seconds when Brady was going down the field.

That was, not to be a homer, the greatest Super Bowl that was ever played ... for so many reasons.

Jacobs run for that 1st down was a HUGE play.

seriously. we are truly blessed as huge giants fans to have witnessed arguably the greatest post season run in at least north american sports, culminating in the best superbowl ever.
SB 25 is the greatest SB ever played IMO

The Unstoppable Force vs. The Immovable Object typ of matchup.

fucking times drives and games were lost without us not getting a fucking inch. No doubt, I was praying he would make it. Of course, the stress was enormous on many plays, and that whole drive was just a miracle. A flat out miracle. I will always treasure it.
It was stressful
LTPS5611 : 4/23/2016 7:24 am : link
But to me the most heart pounding play was the 3rd down deep pass to moss that was just tipped. Still never get why most hghlight shows of that game make it appear that the last play of the game was the plax td. Did any of you actually think the game was over with brady and moss on the field.

Yes.
That's the only game my wife ever watched with me. From the time the game started I felt like I was going to have a heart attack. I couldn't eat, breath to heavy or even drink anything.

And yes I also agree that was the greatest SB I've ever watched.
All that matters ALWAYS, is the end result.
Big Blue '56 : 4/23/2016 8:21 am : link
That said, how a large man, with the title on the line, could barely make that yard(by inches) is beyond me..

slow regarding the importance of the play prior to the snap.
That was probably the scariest play
Big Rick in FL : 4/23/2016 8:39 am : link
Of that Super Bowl. At least for me. I did not think he was going to get it. Would have been heartbroken had we come up a few inches short. Thank God he made it & Thank God for Plaxico & Eli :) :) :)
the Samuel "near-miss" INT
TexasGmenFan : 4/23/2016 8:43 am : link
has become a folklore of bullshit. he had 0.0% chance at catching that ball let alone getting a finger on it.

but hey, sour grapes i guess.
That game took 15
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 4/23/2016 8:54 am : link
years off my life.

And it was worth it.

100% right on this...that 3rd down pass was soooo close...truth is, as good as Brady is, he just ran out of arm...Moss had a step. Of course it was about 70 yards in the air, not many QBs ever made can make that throw. And great job on 3rd and 4th down by Webster and Wilson for avoiding interference
Agreed, but that the Assante Samuel thing is still mentioned is a joke
BillT : 4/23/2016 9:01 am : link
Samuel has no chance of making that catch and anyone who has really looked at it knows that. And what's worse is the twisted logic that his "failure" somehow diminishes the Giants' victory instead of explaining the Pats' loss.
the play I enjoyed the most was Brady getting
gtt350 : 4/23/2016 10:51 am : link
sacked on 2nd down with 25 seconds left. That was like a second orgasm. then i'm thinking we're actually going to win. Still i was worried

I actually just stood in the bathroom for 10 minutes because I was too nervous to watch. As high anxiety as I've ever felt I think.

Brady goes down! Jay Alford! So many great Joe Buck calls in that game. Best game ever played.

You know, good point about Buck, he was good in that game, especially at the end. Short, to the point descriptions of plays, then he shut up and let you just watch the aftermath and listen to the crowd.

Burress...alone...touchdown New York!!!!!
Most nerve racking for me was when the pats got to ball back
Shockwave : 4/23/2016 7:59 pm : link
And Brady kept bombing it down the field. That sack at the end was probably the best moment
The guy I felt sorry for was Steve Smith.
SB 42 and 46 and ? : 4/23/2016 9:22 pm : link
His promising NFL career went down in flames. His big play, on 3rd and 11 catching the short pass and dashing up the sideline to just beyond the first down marker when he was slammed out of bounds, will be forever unseen. The highlights film always goes right from the Tyree catch to the Burress TD catch.

Jay Alford with his shining moment of his brief, unfortunate career cut down too soon by injury.

It's actually kind of weird the guys in that game that played key roles and how they were hurt and retired so early. Steve Smith, Kevin Boss (although his lasted a few more years, concussions caught up with him). And I think Gibril Wilson also with the concussions. Domenik Hixon to some degree. You can argue Plax had his career shortened with the self-inflicted gunshot and the ensuing incarcenation. And of course, Lawrence Tynes with the MRSA infection. Kind of a hodgepodge of weird circumstances.

And Joe Buck's call on the helmet catch, from Eli's escape from the sack to the actual catch, was just completely abysmal. It's like Buck mailed that telecast in like it was any other game.

Aikman and Buck were pretty bad that night. They barely had a reaction for the Tyree catch. Yes, I know it was a nutty play and all. But still, you have to muster up something more than what they were able to for that play, especially given how late in the game it was and it being a one score game.

Also, that was the best playoff run in the world, nevermind North American sports.
How many of you thought
Phil in LA : 4/25/2016 12:31 am : link
the refs were gonna call "no catch" on the Tyree play?
I wasn't sure

Jacobs also did a great job
cjac : 4/25/2016 7:52 am : link
of the blitz pickup on the TD toss to Plax

he had to cross Eli's face to pick up the safety, good recognition from him, and if he didnt Eli would have been sacked.
That was the only 4th and 1 that I knew Jacobs would get.
WideRight : 4/25/2016 8:02 am : link
it was close and he was never a sure thing, but he went right over Snee against a weak line, so yes I knew he was going to get it.
BARELY got it.
x meadowlander : 4/25/2016 8:57 am : link
Yes, biggest play of the drive, without a doubt.

After the Burress TD, I was pretty sure the Pats would be able to get into FG range. Thought it was EXTREMELY cocky of them to throw bombs only. With their underneath game, knowing full well the Giants HAD to double Moss, how fucking stupid was it not to try to grab 20-yard chunks instead low-probability bombs? On a couple of those plays, people were OPEN in the 15-25 yard range. Brady was only concerned with the walk-off bomb.

Hubris. Pure hubris.

We as diehards know about the incredible importance of the SS play. But highlight film is for the vast majority who are casual fans..The SS play wasn't sexy enough albeit orgasmic for us

Most analyses miss the key to that play - Toomer's fantastic pick block of the corner.

At exactly 1:56 of this video, you can see it. The most important play of Toomer's career, IMO. :D

That wasn't Toomer. It was David Tyree. :)

There was actually a long-time BBI poster who used the Samuel play to say that Eli was that close to losing the Super Bowl to an obvious drop in his shitty analysis that said Mark Sanchez had just as productive of postseason stats.

It became folklore because that poster insisted that Samuel dropped a gimme, despite others posting video and gif's showing Samuel barely getting a finger on the ball at the height of his leap.
