Cappy - "I think the guys know exactly how they have to play. It's a situation where we're not going to say too much as coaches. We're just going to let them play within the team concept, go out and have some fun and try to close them out if we can. It's all about our fans and the atmosphere that's going to be in that building. We have to feed off our crowd and that's the big thing." Fransie - "We had a chance last year in Game 7 to finish it but this is the first time we're going back with three wins and have a chance to close it out at home. So hopefully we're going to come out and respond the right way." Hammer - "The last one is always the hardest one to win. We have an opportunity to do it in our barn, so we have to prepare." The Captain - Our fans know the opportunity we have, and our goal as players is not to get too carried away but also feed off their energy. Its the next game and we know how desperate Florida will be, so we have to be able to match that. |
The other 3 however are the key to keeping any sustained attack going beyond 1 shift at a time. Need them to bring it beyond their normal few perimeter wrist shots (Nelson), one-off nice backchecks/passes from the corners (Bailey) and random odd man breaks (Kulemin).
So far the defense keeping the Panthers mostly on the perimeter and Greiss have equalized the shooting imbalance. Would be nice to see the forwards come out and end the Panthers here. We've been in the exact position they're in now twice in recent years, need to use that experience to our advantage and end them.
How about Greiss the animal...apparently at 12:30am after the 2OT win, he was putting in a sweat session on the exercise bike. Love the dedication. Let's go get one tonight!
I just hope the team comes out flying. It would be great to get up on Florida early at home. Make Florida press early on the road for a change.
Barc should be rocking tonight. Can't wait!
Wasn't that insane in person?
I remember it like it was yesterday... When he was skating with the puck it was silent. I heard his skating from the 300s.
The skate seemed like it was 5 mns.
When he scored it was the loudest I have ever heard any arena. Ever.
Amazing

That goal was also before the shootout came along and tarnished the mystique of the penalty shot, too. These days seeing a guy at center about to go mano y mano with the goalie is almost a daily occurrence in the NHL. It was a special thing when it happened then, let alone in that situation... and then to convert.
Still probably my favorite Islander moment, though I'm hoping it'll come in 2nd (or 3rd) before we're finished this year.
The Goal - ( New Window )
Was also (unfortunately) at Game 4 and swung by where Shannon and DP do the pre-game. Shannon spotted my vintage 80s sweater and asked if we could take a photo. I'm embarrassed to say I was actually pretty giddy about it. Btw...I'm pretty short but Shannon is pretty tall.
LGI!!
I was on the subway platform and ran into the girl who does the interviews and giveaways on the jumbotron during whistles and commercials. Alyse Barker. VERY nice and even hotter in person. Turns out she's also a Jets cheerleader and former Miss New York. Kindly ignore my terrible attempt at a playoff beard.

Great shot!
Probably won't be posting much. Good luck men.
Let's go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No sweat. This is a situation we're used to by now.
Terrible turnover by Kulie. FLA sat back early, attacking like they have all series now. Isles need to control the puck when they win it and look for shot opportunities...still too many passes.
Before the penalty that is...

Thanks bro

Thanks B!
Thank you, sir.
Right there with ya Fish.
When's game 1?
Thank you, tonight I felt like I did in the late 70's. Watching this growing into a contender. Nothing like playoff hockey. This feels so awesome to get the monkey off their back.
I honestly didn't remember how this felt and how handshakes looked without cursing off people.
B in ALB, thank you. It's very classy of you.
Second, the Panthers presented a challenge with that combination of size, speed and skill offensively and that can also run a trap system - boring, but effective with their personnel.
And yet, the Isles moved the puck and got production when they needed to (yet still not with enough consistency). That should bring confidence. While Tampa certainly deserves respect, they do not play the same style as Florida. If the Isles apply the lessons of this series to the next, they can carve out a lead position and play more of their game against a team smaller and less deep.
YES!YES!YES!
Yep. All of this. Amazing.
We deserved this.
Hey, it's been so long the Isles were the most successful at anything, I will take it.

Only the Mets are a better team the New York region right now.
On another note, the fact that there are some absolutely delusional comments on the other team's thread, smacking of petulant children stamping their feet in a desperate attempt to continue to deny that the Isles are in fact a good team and earned that victory - perhaps to mask some deep seeded insecurity - is pretty funny (and at the same time very sad) to see.

It's really quite hysterical. Like the Isles haven't been screwed over the past few years on more than a handful of times.
The petulant child act by a few Ranger fans however is comical. They are the same ones who say the Isles don't have fans and no one cares about them.
Now, the NHL has conspired to make them advance for ratings. Yeesh. For so long the Rangers have been the superior organization -- by alot. Sure it burned me, but can't act like a brat over it.
The Isles just won a classic series, in which every game was basically decided by a goal (in game two Florida scored an empty net goal).
One playoff series win after 23 years, does not equal a cup. Most of us know what watching winning playoff series are like -- 19 of them. But last night was all about one small step in erasing 23 years of misery.
And being fortunate enough to be at Barclay with my kids, and hearing them scream "Yes, Yes, Yes" made it a moment I won't soon forget.
TB has a goalie, so they'll be a stiffer test, but unless Stamkos and Stralman come back (and even if they do) the Islander have a legit chance in that series.
either coming back is at best a longshot.
Cmon, people: This isnt the first rodeo for any of us. The Islanders arent getting called there. The Panthers arent getting called there. No team is getting called there. Its always 'play on, playah' in that situation. If you think the Panthers were jobbed out of a Game 7 because of that call, youre literally asking for a standard of enforcement that doesnt exist in the playoffs.
Theres a reason Game 6 and Game 7 have a miniscule number of penalties in comparison to the previous three games and the regular season: The zebras dont want to decide it.
I am certain that if it was anyone's team outside of the Islanders, in the same situation, there'd be the "c'mon, who would really call that in that situation" sentiment. But since this team has had no demonstrable record of success in the past 30 or so years, I get it; they're an easy target to shit on. And if there's a desire to split hairs, the Panthers GWG last Wednesday was the result of a dump in that was clearly icing, as the puck carrier was 5 feet to his side of the red line when shooting the puck in, with no Islander having been nearby to possibly play it to have icing waved off; Pulock was the first past the faceoff dots by a wide margin. So it evens out. Maybe Florida should have scored on their OVERTIME PENALTY SHOT (I mean, who gets those?) to have rendered anyone's mock indignity moot.
TB has a goalie, so they'll be a stiffer test, but unless Stamkos and Stralman come back (and even if they do) the Islander have a legit chance in that series.

Thanks, pj. I think this series for the Isles was huge. As I mentioned in my 11:39 post last night, FLA had a skill/size/speed combination that other teams don't have, combined with the modified trap system they play. TB is more freewheeling, so I expect less suffocation of the Isles (we had problems exiting our zone/entering theirs all series). And even if Cooper has them mimic that style, outside of Hedman on D, the Bolts don't have the same size/skill combo. I respect the hell out of them, with or without Stamkos and Stralman, but I can see (maybe really hope?) the Isles using what they saw against Florida to improve on the things where they met with resistance and turn them into advantages against TB.
Agree with almost all of that, Bishop is not Luongo though.
He can steal a game. You know this, but he's a MONSTER in the net, he's like 6' 7 or 6' 8" and 220 pounds and he's agile for that size.
Drouin has filled in nicely for Stamkos, for a smaller player, he's got great hands, vision, and I hate the phrase "hockey IQ". Surprised he was at odds so long with Cooper who is supposed to be a players coach.
Should be a good series.
A lot of people are projecting Okposo to MTL after the season, so I'll be keeping an eye on him, I have never been a fan of his game. other than being an American and wanting him to do well.
The butt-hurt (by some!) on the Rangers thread is hilarious.

If Bailey is out, I hope Capuano puts Strome back in. And it would be a great boost if Pulock is ready for Tampa. His cannon was missed on the powerplay.

Who would you sit for Pulock? Zid played really well IMO these last two games.
Don't expect to get tix as easy as it was in Florida. I took my son to a game there in Dec (a meaningless game vs Columbus) and paid nearly $50 a pop to sit in the upper corners. That said, it's a great arena to watch a game. Old school organist in the upper level behind the goal. Lively crowd too. I know last year they made it difficult for visiting teams to get playoff tix. Not sure if they've done that again as they caught a lot of flak for it. Enjoy it if you do go...

Looks like uppers for game 1 around about $70 on Stubhub. Not bad at all. If it's Thursday, I think i'm definitely going to game 1.

My dad went to a couple of the ECF games down there last year. I recall him saying the prices were pretty sticky the few days before, but dropped a little on game day. I can double check with him on that if you want. That seems like a good deal, though.

There's a couple good guys over there. Actually, despite that they're not a huge fan of me, I like most of them. I think there's a kinship amongst hockey fans across all fan bases. We're those who "get it." They are smart fans and they know their hockey on BBI.
But Rangers fans really are an entitled bunch. So soft. Literally all year long in 90% of their losses, their threads have been riddled with people bitching about various ways they were screwed. The refs sucked. The new review process sucks. Toronto hates them. Yada yada yada. It's so nauseating. Does it really make you feel better to pretend the refs stole things from you? That's one view I've shared with MarshallOnMontana across all sports. There's nothing more futile than blaming the refs unless the offense is so unbelievably egregious.
And in the same breathe, yes, they do acknowledge their teams flaws, but they just do that as a qualifier to justify the incessant complaining and entitlement regarding those other factors. "We weren't winning this series anyway, but the refs absolutely sucked." That type of bullshit.
I watched every minute of that Penguins series and a solid amount of Rangers games this year. It's nonsense. They were one of the least penalized teams in the league this year. The Letang slash and subsequent lack of suspension was garbage, yes. Other than that? Very evenly officiated series.
I'm sure I'll be accused of being obsessed with the Rangers for posting a grand total of 1 time about them since they were eliminated (this post). I admit I definitely follow them closely. Glad they are in the rear view mirror where they should be (we are the better hockey team) and am looking forward to a tough series with Tampa.
Hoping my string of predictions works out :)
Last year's prediction: Caps in 7
This year's prediction: Isles in 6 over the Panthers
I've got the Isles in 7 over the Lightning.
Let's go!

Congrats and good luck Islanders fans!
2) Ryan Pulock: This situation is unexpectedly intriguing to me. I would've thought him returning to the lineup would be a no brainer once he got healthy, but in my opinion, Zidlicky had his two best defensive games of the season the last 2 times out. He also had the primary assist on Quine's game-winner the other night. What do we do here?
My seats were a perfect angle the goal. The TV angle had a lot of traffic in front of the action. Lots of players and Luongo himself. But from my vantage point there was no obstructions. The entire section stood all at once because we saw all of that wide open real estate and Tavares sneaking around the corner.
Really as incredible a sports moment as I've ever witnessed live and it's not close.

1) If Bailey is hurt that makes the decision easy. If not it is a tough call because I am also not thrilled with the play of Kulemin (although he stepped up in Games 5&6) and Nelson.
2) CdH has been our worst D-man in the playoffs. Do you pair Pulock with Boychuk?
Zidlicky will most likely get game one. But if Pulock is healthy, I think he will see ice time this series.
dehaan, hickey will never sit for anyone this year.
Also Zidlicky has looked great BUT he is well rested and if he keeps playing, he will tire out and lose the edge. Same with Bernier who also was great.
Quine while electric did disappear yesterday.
They are petulant children who think it was Hank's birthright to hoist the Cup. Not so much. Their panties will untwist sooner or later (I hope). That is unless the refs allow it.
Are Stamkos and Stralman still doubtful for round 2?
- Love the Penguins and will do anything for them
- Are starting a love affair with the Islanders
- Hate the Rangers.
Isles and Pens could potentially meet in the ECF. What on Earth will Bettman do!?

Cooper hopes Stralman will start skating soon, but doubtful on Stamkos and still a longshot for Stralman.
Wow, I'm surprised either Stamkos or Strallman are even a possibility, even if remote.

Why are you surprised about Stamkos and Strallman. The NHL made certain their injuries would last through the Islanders series (which the NHL had already set up).

If only James Dolan didn't sue them so he could run his own website.
Good stuff.
Good stuff.
Thanks for chiming in, buddy!
Look there is a lot of good guys over there. The 2 who are more haters than fans are still at it. Look Clutterbuck took an elbow to the nose that drew blood and a high stick. Franzie got elbowed high also in game 5. The refs are going to let them play it is the playoffs. At some point in this next series we will all be screaming at the tv over the call that should have been made or the lack of one that screwed us and led to a goal. It is called playoff hockey. I am giddy we won the series. The monkey is gone bring on the Lightning. Just remember what happened to this board after game 4. As I have said, this is a resilient team. They have heart and thanks to that heart the monkey is gone and we feel the way we do today. I am hoping for no Thursday night games as that is my council meeting night. Praying for Friday.
Thank you. For the record we're kind've just reacting to your thread.
I was just saying how I think the Rangers fans on BBI are as bright a fan community I've seen. When you guys were 16-3 or whatever, most of you were treating it as a bit of fools gold (except Seth who thinks you're the Oilers of the 80s), when most fans--myself included for sure--wouldn't be able to see it that way. You're in tune with the team and know your stuff. The ref stuff is the only issue I take.
And yeah, we're having a little fun with this right now. You're our arch rival and we're rarely on top these days. I think there's been plenty of Islander talk on this thread.
Anyway, that's just my take. I have no love for the Bolts after last year so good luck against them.
Tampa has a lot of skill but the Isles will be able to play more to their tempo.

I was actually on that MSG link before, but can't spot it. Mind you, looking for the equalizer here, not the game-winner.

The second time he did it, after using the joke (where it failed) on Boychuck, Johnny yelled over "stan, it's not a damn florida vacation!!"
he also had a back and forth with Greiss that went something like
Stan: "so, is this the most exciting game you've ever played in"
Greiss: "It's definitely up there"
Stan: "Just up there??"
Greiss: No idea what to say

I didn't catch that. But yeah, Boychuck seemed the most annoyed by it in his interview so that makes sense.

I'll give the Mets a small edge in the race for best team in New York.
But forget being the king of hockey in New York... I think Tavares is the best player in all New York sports right now. Beckham and Eli are the only other athletes in the conversation. Syndergaard is on his way, but not yet in the league of the other 3.

And you're also right about Harvey. He's been getting knocked around a lot this year so far, but I definitely put too much weight in that. I do like Syndergaard better, though. I think that kid is only just getting started. Hoping he stays healthy.

If fans can suspend allegiances for a moment and look at it unbiased, there is a mountain of evidence pointing at Tavares as the best athlete in NY right now.

I can't see them going wednesday/thursday and have 2 games in the books before the other series even start yet. so if it's wednesday/saturday, tehre are 2 options for games 3 and 4. monday/tuesday at barclays. or tuesday/friday.
wed/sat/tues/fri would be nice. 2 days off in between each of the 1st 4 games.
I haven't gotten anything from the team, but Overlook is always the place in the city for Isles playoff games. I was there for the Quine game (I can't believe that sentence exists). Not quite as packed as when the Isles did their official shindig, but definitely a couple dozen people, all there for the same reason.

Is there any chance Lee would be able to make it back if we made a run to the cup?

I don't mind beating teams at or near full strength. Especially when we're not (I do miss Lee; the Isles certainly do as well). That said, he's wearing a non-contact jersey so it'll still be a while before he's a full go. They are more optimistic to have Stralman back for this series than they are Stamkos.

Gibson was returned to BPT today. Looks like Berube gets first chair as backup but it seems like Halak may not be far off from being able to take the backup slot.

As long as Halak stays the backup that's fine.

Already thinking about tomorrow.
Isles need to come out fast and take advantage of TB needing to get rid of some rust not having played in a while.

I'm more worried about the opposite.

Agreed. And I think the quick turnaround works against us. Going to be very difficult to win game 1. Still optimistic for a split in the first 2 games, but game 1 is not going to be easy at all.
Keeps them in the flow of playing

Definitely a slow schedule for the first 4 games, and that'll give some injured TB players time to get healthy.
By the way, the Blues caught wind of Tony and are bringing him in for Game 3, haha

Do you say deservingly so because they have home ice?
Islanders ended the season with more points and while they lost halak Greiss has been very solid. Tampa has lost stamkos, Stralman and brown was questionable. Don't know how deserved it is.

They obviously are the favorites and deservedly so.

I say it because they are a team that went to the Stanley Cup Finals last season and although they don't have Stamkos Drouin has filled in more than adequately. Bishop is an elite goalie most of the time and their middle 6 is much better than ours in my opinion. All that being said I say it more because the Islanders didn't play nearly as well as they should have. You can't bank on Greiss being as brilliant as he was although he may do it. I do like a lot that the Isles have a Special Teams advantage again. That can be huge. If the Islanders play better and don't have several minute stretches where they aren't moving their feet I feel they will win. And just because TB is favored doesn't mean they will win. Florida was favored too.

Good assessment, Don't think you're wrong (if it come off like that), I just believe these teams are more even than some would think

I agree that they are close. I just like to look at the series from a clean slate. If the performances of JT and Greiss ignite the others then watch out. Tampa, even with Stamkos, didn't seem as dominant as last season either. One thing that was awesome to hear right after the win JT told Shannon that they didn't play good enough. I hope the others follow that lead.
There's a few more: Parisi against the Rangers, Tonelli in 82 after he tied it late, Morrow against the Rangers after Maloney tied it late (with a high stick ;)). I'd put each of those ahead of LaFontaine's.

Where does the JT overtime goal rank for you. I have it at #4. Behind Nystrom, Volek, and Lafontaine. In that order.

If Games 2 through 4 were so spread out, what is the point of starting Wednesday versus Thursday?

Plus we are a more physical team it will allow them to get ease the bruises. I think the schedule helps them more than us. Honestly, who cares all that matters is we have to get to 4 wins before they do.
Ken Morrow's goal was bigger than Volek and LaFontaine's

Lol. I tell people how bad my hockey luck is. I was at an Isles Stanley Cup game...the year they lost.
Of course I couldn't go the year before.that would've been too sweet.

Not so sure. We were heavy favorites against the Rangers and heavy underdogs against Pitt. Plus, we broke up their 3-peat attempt (cue Pat Summerall)

I was too young to fully appreciate nystroms goal.
By default Lafontaine and Volek for me. Bates PS was fun, but irrelevant at the end of the day, as they lost the series.
