NFT: Islanders at Lightning, R2G1, 7pm Game Thread

Hey, so...this is a new (yet old, deep in the memory banks) feeling. Rack 'em up, a new round and a new challenge. On to Tampa for a matchup against a very similar opponent.

Both sides come in with injuries, although many will run with the Stamkos/Stralman acknowledgement and look past the Halak, Lee and Grabovski gap (although Greiss has, at least for the time he's been in the starter role, rendered the Halak part moot). Meaning: both sides have issues, so deal with it.

While TB doesn't represent the size/speed/skill combo the Panthers had throughout their lineup, they do present a real challenge given their offensive skill overall, the redwood on the back line in Hedman and a world-class goalie in goliath Ben Bishop (who has shown streakiness; against the Isles this year, he's 1-2, with a 4.41 GAA and .842 SV%). But those regular season numbers mean nothing as the playoffs are its own season. We may see some more wide open hockey here as the Bolts don't play a trap system like FLA did.

Staple had a twitter Q& A with the fanbase this morning, and some of the things he discussed were:
- Pulock likely not back until after this weekend, expected to play next week
- Boychuk didn't play well in Rd 1, and he knows he needs to be better
- MDC likely called up after BPT series is over but doubts he'll play
- Feels Grabbo is probably done (his words, "a sad situation")
- Cappy's issue with Strome is 18's play away from the puck
- Outside of JT and Greiss, felt Hickey was Isles best player in Rd 1; one of the few that joined the rush regularly
- Feels there's currently a 30% chance Hammer is back with the Isles next year.
- Doesn't think KO returns, citing Free Agency doesn't come around often and he's gotta do what's best for his family. But the chances for a return are better with the first round win.
- Isles will try to move some contracts and get JT a top line LW
- Bernier's solid play has earned him a spot
- Hall for Hammer unlikely unless Isles sweeten that potential offer. Perhaps more like Draisaitl. And Hammer won't be moved for picks; Snow will demand an NHL-ready player.

But we're not talking housekeeping until the season ends. Too much hockey left to be played, more fun to be had. Drop the puck already.

Let's Go Islanders!

Growing up it all seems so one-sided

ok here we go.

i think we match up very well with Tampa. 4-2 against them in the last 2 seasons. including a great win at home towards the end of the regular season.
Like Florida, we need to jump on Tampa fast and try to steal at least
GiantBlue : 4/27/2016 11:17 am : link
one in their barn but preferably two!

I thought the Islanders did not have great match-ups vs. Florida and yet still controlled play when they needed to. I think they control the match-ups better vs. Tampa and the added confidence of winning the last series is what they need to play the winner of Wash-Pitt.

LGI!!!!!
last 4 seasons we are

8-4 against them.
The quick turnaround favors Tampa Bay for sure.
Mike in Long Beach : 4/27/2016 11:19 am : link
But I really think everyone in that locker room was feeling the pressure of winning a playoff series. Our most important players have been here the longest and have endured "the drought" as much as anyone.

Tonight will be tough, but I think everyone will play a lot looser now that the monkey is off their collective back.

I like our chances to get to the ECF. Let's Go Islanders!!
Isles at Tampa
Fish : 4/27/2016 11:21 am : link
First few shifts will feel great for Islanders as they will not be hit and will skate at freewill (see what I did there). Once they realize their bodies are not getting pounded we will control play.

I tend to agree with you, but the biggest challenge for this team, with their lack of previous playoff success, is sustaining rhythm. While I think they will be looser, they need to keep their focus. They've been guilty of taking their eye off the ball several times throughout this year; certainly can't afford to do that going forward. The good news is there were lessons to learn in winning the previous round without their best stuff. But they came through in the most crucial of situations, OT wins. Despite the cries of poor officiating in the Panthers series, facts are facts...FLA had every bit the same chance to win 3 games in OT just like the Isles did. They didn't. We found a way. That's important to have in their banks of experience moving forward.
2 things from the original post
Gutless Puke : 4/27/2016 11:50 am : link
1 - Sad for Grabs. However, it will free up an additional 5 million in cap space. Along with some other moves, Snow can do some real work.
2 - I would rather any other play besides Hall and Eberle for Hamonic.

Let's go now.
Still sort
Metnut : 4/27/2016 12:01 pm : link
of can't believe that NYI are in the second round. I think it's a good matchup for the Isles here if Greiss can hold up. Isles D is significantly deeper than Tampa's.

Should be a lot of goals scored in this series, so hopefully lines 2 and 3 get involved. LGI!

In order to win, it's time for guys like Nelson and Strome to show consistency and drive in their play.
Really pumped for this

I think we match up quite well against the Bolts. Can't get into shootouts with them. Shore up the defensive end and take advantage of odd man rushes. And for god's sake, hit the net on shots from the point!

I guess I wasn't paying attention. I thought he left the game with a lower body issue. It is sad about Grabbo. If a forward does down are they really going with Wright? It should be a fun series. Let's start this already.

We had more points, but then again the Lightning had 43 ROWs compared to our 40, which in it's purest form should be the truest measurement of success... you know... winning hockey games haha. So I'm not fuming over this one too much. More often than the Islanders, the Lightning went out and won a hockey game without the benefit of a skills competition. Even with the shootout they still won more games.

So the NHL countered their shitty points system with their shitty seeding system and somehow I think it worked out. That's just me. I get both sides of this one.
Good luck Isles

I think the worst thing that can happen is the Isles come out flat and dig themselves a quick 2/3-0 hole.

I'll probably be saying this all series... just get the damn puck to the net and good things will happen!

with the Rangers out of the playoffs, I assume their complaining about the refs will be carried on to our series?
so...

Pulock not playing isn't an injury thing anymore? It's a matchup thing?

from my NHL App

"Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock, who has been dealing with an upper-body injury since 4/20 did travel and was a full participant. Capuano said he could play Wednesday but didn't commit to it."

"It's tough to make those decisions based upon the matchups. I've talked to Pulock plenty of times and have no doubt he can do the job."

HUH?

I really need this game to night as a distraction. Have had a rough few days. An islander victory would be exactly what the doctor ordered. Lost a friend over the weekend 38 years old. Unfortunately, it was self inflicted. I was dealing with it on Sat and Sun but was in a little bit of denial could not believe it happened. We buried him today and I hope whatever pain he was in is now gone. That being said, this is the perfect thing to take my mind off of things. He was a big Devils fan who hated the Rangers and was pulling for us in the last series. Some where I know he was smiling for us when we won.

Tonight we need to get off to a solid start take control of the game and let Griess keep doing what he has been doing stopping shots by being able to see them clearly. I like where this team is right now, they believe in each other but it is now time we get more production out of 2nd and 4th lines. Go Isles!

Still some slop out there. TB is a team capable of getting a lot in a hurry. Need to be on our toes for the final 20. Which, of course is the time I have to miss part of the period picking up the dudes from Boy Scouts. Let's keep this moving in the right direction.

How good has the 1st 2 periods been. Prince is looking like a much bigger steal for us than we 1st thought. Did not like last 4 minutes of the 2nd. Looked like we were playing as if it was 4-1 with 4 minutes to go in the 3rd rather than the 2nd. We need to keep the heat on be smart dump the puck deep and keep hitting and no dumb penalties. Keep it going.

Staple gets a shoutout on NHLN, Weekes saying that he talked earlier today about this being a chance for Strome to get back into things and contribute. 2 apples tonight, looks like he got the message.

Schneider talking about how hard it is to play the Isles because of the depth at forward, rolling 4 lines capable of beating you. Said that when they're on their forechecking game, they set the tone and are hard to beat. Wears on you when they spend time in the opposing team's zone.
Great win
theold5j : 4/27/2016 9:55 pm : link
That backup goalie for tampa is tough. He played against us at the coliseum last December. Almost had a shutout. Isles scored 2 goals in like 15 seconds with only a few min to go in the game. Then tacked on an EN for a 3-1 win.
Exactly what the doctor ordered
The 12th Man : 4/27/2016 10:16 pm : link
Thought we played way to much on our heals. We were hoping they would make a mistake and we could counter. We stopped being physical and it almost cost us. Learn from it, rest up and go get them in game 2. Overall if I was a gayer I would be saying 2 maybe 3 of the 5 were soft and 1 was an empty netter. That said makes no difference how you win them just win.
It should say hater where that came
The 12th Man : 4/27/2016 10:19 pm : link
From I have no idea.
Overlook was a little weak.
Mike in Long Beach : 4/27/2016 10:20 pm : link
No "official" Isles event, though they were there raffling off playoff tickets and signed picks again. Plus there was this huge party of like 15 chicks who happened to have a thing there and they didn't know a football from a hockey puck.

Still, a win is a win. Very upsetting to see they got so complacent at the end there. Greiss is a very good goalie. He proved it all year. It's not an aberration. Having said that, it's impossible for him to continue at this pace, it just is, and we can't just play like shit for a full period like that.

We have some gifted shooters and some very good goal tending and keeping us winning. The 4 line came alive today as well, which was my biggest positive take from the game. The first 2 periods validated we are good. The 3rd validated that we forget how to be good sometimes.

Another learning lesson hopefully, and it's nice to be "learning" while winning.

God how nice would it be to head back to Brooklyn up a pair?
I don't think they got complacent . They know better
theold5j : 4/27/2016 10:38 pm : link
I thinks it's just natural. A team down 4-1 in a playoff game, is going to play (or should play anyway) the most desperate 10 minutes of hockey you'll ever see. Tue islanders had to fight them off and not make things easy for them. It's tough to play with a lead when the other team is pressing like crazy.

I thought about that for a bit, having felt they were a bit complacent as you did, and then had to think there's some fatigue factor as well. They had just played parts of 10 periods in what would normally be a 6 period stretch. I think it caught up with them on a fairly quick turnaround, but as you said, a lesson learned while winning, The mental toughness to power through when the tank is on fumes is what winning teams need to have. They're going to have to figure that out to advance.

Hey all I didnt get to watch this.
giantgiantfan : 4/28/2016 12:05 am : link
How did we look? From the highlights it looks like trading a 3rd for Prince is turning out to be a great deal, Tavares continues to lead, and Greiss made some great stops again.

Anything else I should be aware of? Ecstatic we put up 5 and stole another game 1!

I disagree old5j... it's one thing to expect a push and fall on your heels a bit. It's another to be completely dependent on your goalie playing Vezina quality play just in order to not give up FOUR goals. A lesser effort from Greiss at the end there and we might not even make it to overtime.

That is very fair. If the poor play at the end is the result of fatigue, it's very reasonable for sure, and considering how well they played through 2 periods, I bet that's the case. Perhaps I'm being a little hard.

time to rest up!

I need to say, because I shit on him pretty badly last series, Brock Nelson played a complete game. He competed for pucks, got in the corners, back-checked...all the things I thought he coasted on last series.

Secondary scoring will win or lose this series..it's important for these guys to keep it up.

there was so much open ice last night compared to the florida series. Prince was standing in front of Bishop alone forever on his goal.

we deserved to win the game. definately the better team last night

on the TB 3rd goal the puck got lost in one of their player's pants and I thought there should have been a whistle. it shook out after a few seconds and they scored right after.

they had more shots than us, but mostly as a result of their 17 3rd period shots during thier mad push. it was even heading into the 3rd.

we had less give aways, more take aways and won the faceoff battle 32-21

stupid of NBC to name Kucherov one of the 3 stars instead of Tavares.

what the other posters said, the game felt like 2014-2015 Islanders. That's a very good thing, especially if Greiss holds up.

Really glad to see Strome get involved as he's a big part of the future. Frustrating to let them back in the game in the 3rd, but it's sort of inevitable for the other team to make a push at home, glad they were able to hold on.

Zid didn't play as good as he did in games 5, 6. I think Cappy rides him again game 2, but we might see Pulock in Brooklyn is Zid doesn't improve.

But one of you guys was clamoring to see Strome and Nelsen play together and it finally happened. Both of them seem to have benefitted but not as much as a Prince.

One thing about Tampa is that they aren't that good in their own zone at all. When they are attacking they are lethal but the Isles were able to keep the puck moving in their zone and it really exposed them. Bishop was horrible too. You'd have to expect him to bring his A game on Saturday.

They dont know how to promote themselves. They couldnt even find the time to get the coach to show up here. We were willing to take him. They couldnt even get him to the show on time.

So I mean, they dont know what theyre doing. Theyre a little lost right now. Theyre in a little deep.

Now theyre players arent, but the organization is. Their organization right now as far as what its doing, especially from a PR standpoint, is lost. I mean, third rate at best.

Hey Mike, why don't you try actually showing them or hockey for that matter any respect throughout the season and maybe they'd make time to be on your show. Drop everything everyone. Fatso wants Cappy on.

Mike Francessa that is not MILB.

Congrats on the win guys.

Very sorry to hear about your loss, 12th Man. Hope your days get better.
Missed this earlier. Thanks, Brett. Isles are learning to become winners in front of our eyes. It's been nerve-wracking but more fun than anything.

You know what I learned relatively recently... In the five years prior to the Cup run, the Islanders went to the Eastern Conference Finals in 4 of those years, and lost in the 2nd round the other year.

Holy shit.. if you were a die hard fan and didn't know the glory that was coming, my God that must've been torture.

Don't think they did conference finals back then - only 4 rounds total and they had byes prior to 1980 as well. 1980 was the first year that 16 teams made the playoffs and they seeded them 1-16. Isles won the cup that year as the 5th seed. Still, they did have some good runs prior to winning it all - particularly in 75.
Isn't it 4 rounds total now?

yeah, that's right - my bad
timintey : 4/28/2016 3:36 pm : link
however, the byes back then had some teams only play 3 rounds.
For example

Here is the bracket in 1979.

In 4 of those 5 years we were in the NHL's final 4, and in the final 8 in the 5th year.

Well okay, but still, the idea that you were in the "Final 4" four out of five seasons, not winning in any of them... still had to have been torture, lol
Use the Giants as an example

Some teams have a bye and only have to play 3 "rounds" now in the NFL.

If the Giants got to the NFC Championship game 4 out of 5 years, sometimes yes having a bye along the way, wouldn't that be such a tease if they didn't get a Super Bowl out of a stretch like that?
Has anyone sat in section 231 at Barclays?

Got seats in row 2 - hoping the obstruction isn't too bad...

You arent going to see below faceoff dots. You might be able to see by leaning forward but im not too sure

theold5j : 4/28/2016 3:55 pm : link
you won't see the goalie on your end. I was in 229, row 2 and i was just barely able to see the goal line. 231 should be fully obstructed. but your in the building, which is the important part.

If you want to see the game in its entirety it appears as though you could go and stand at the top of section 217. but you would have to get there pretty early on and you probably wont be able to leave or you'll lose your spot.

you could see the scoreboard to watch the game when the players disappear.

I agree. I was too young to remember 75 but that was the biggest surprise run. Upset the Rangers, fell behind Pitt 3 games to 0 then won 4 straight. Fell behind Philly 3-0 then won 3 straight before losing in 7. For a team in its 3rd year that's a great run.

79 I remember. Won the President's cup only to lose to the Rangers in the semis. That hurt...

Since it appears these seats have a fairly substantial obstruction according to the comments, would you mind sharing your experience here after the game? I'm sure at some point I'm going to want to go to a premium regular season game and get in the building for cheap. Would love to know if these are worth it.
Ya, for sure.

I'll take a pic from my seat and try to figure out how to get it on here lol
OBSTRUCTED VIEW SEAT REVIEW - section 229
theold5j : 4/28/2016 7:51 pm : link
for those looking at or asking about obstructed seats. Here is a review of my seat

Section 229, row 2, seat 16,17

I sat here for the series clincher. From this seat I had a view of everything except the nearest corner and behind the net. My view was basically cut off at the goal line. I never lost sight if the goalie and could just about see the top of the goal iF i leand forward. I could just barely see the net. For instance. On the 1st and only florida goal I knew the puck beat Griess but I didn't see it go in. I saw the player reactions.

In this row I would say seats 1-12 have a clear view of the entire goal. And I would say the same for the first row, as well.

The seat view on ticketmaster showed that I would have a clean view of the entire goal but that wasn't the case.

All said and done I'd sit there again. Face value on ticketmaster was like 75 bucks.

And guess what I got a full view if. The tavares tying and winning goal. Because they were down the other end.

Obviously happy to see MDC and Mayfield up, although I doubt MDC will see any action. Nice reward for Wotherspoon. I'm excited about his future. Smooth skater, plays responsible 2-way hockey. 11-45-56 as an 18 year old on a team that went 35-34-2, was an assistant captain and was named the Tri-City Americans DPOY. AHL eligible for next season. Will be another bright spot for this team's future.
