NFT: Best air filter for HVAC system?

DC Gmen Fan : 4/27/2016 10:32 pm
Been using 3M filtrate (cheap) filters, but having airflow issues, and the filter is bowed whenever it's put in the system. I'm looking for a nice compromise of quality filtering without taxing my older ac system too badly. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
You can have one custom made for 65 to 100$

If your "turbolation" is getting worse, you might want to clean the evaporator coil. Depending on your system, it could be difficult or easy. If your filter is bending inwards toward the air handler, that is telling me that uou have good suction. Could be good, or your air return is too small - hence bad "turbolation". I am in Houston and was always tuned into air flow on my very old downstairs system. Tried the custom made "last for ever" metal filter. Effective as a vacuum cleaner but cut down airflow a lot! Also a PITA to clean. I had a 5 ton system installed and the air handler was much mo' betta than the 4 ton system and it can easily handle a high Mirv filter (4" thick"). I put a very cheap 1" filter in front of it to catch the bigger goobers and change that out frequently. No longer have Great Danes (Livestock in the house) and the filters are much cleaner - last longer. Oh, do you have another filter near the evaporator coil? We dont down here, but I helped my son with his system in Connecticut when he had airflow problems. He had an "A" coil in the furnace system. It had a filter between the intake and the coil. He changed that out and then had better airflow.
Not sure about all systems

but a Carrier tech told me those 3M filters really f up the equipment and you are better off just buying the cheaper stuff and changing them more often. I did and do not notice the difference beyond more effort to change them. Gotta love marketing...
