He's just not crazy about all the French kissing. j/k
Actually, I think it all comes down to intent. If your dog hug is genuine and you're not pinning the animal down (like the photo in the article) most dogs will know that you're just giving affection.
If my dog was uncomfortable with a hug his body would tense up, like he does when I need to clean his ears.
My dog gives his own version. Whenever I get home he will sit down in front of me and if I squat down to his level, he'll put both of his paws/arms on mine and rest them there.
Then he gives me the "there's your hug, man.. now take me on my walk" face.
It all depends on the dog. Both of my dogs want nothing more than to jump up on you and be drenched with affection. They get hugs all the time and love em.
that involves him sitting on my foot, squeezing in between 2 people on the couch in the tiniest little space, and ramming his head into your leg if he's being ignored. Oh, and he's 75 lbs too.
Tickle their necks and chests and notice how differently they react.

Damn! You beat me to the French Kisses joke. ;>(

there's two types of dog:
the kind that want to rip your face off
the kind that is pathetically in need of having your affection.
both of these types are coming at you. It's up to you to decide which is which.
