Buddy Whose an Ohio Sate's Fan Review of Apple

DaddyM89 : 4/28/2016 10:45 pm
Saw every game he played in. Pretty solid review, hopefully he will be a CB1 down the lien to justify the pick.

"Well you're getting a corner with real NFL size and an NFL ready body, he's 6 foot 200 and he's got long arms that helps him to break up passes pretty well. He played both zone and man in college but I think he does better in the man, because he's able to make the guy he's matched up with uncomfortable with his size. He plays each play expecting the ball to come his way. He's great mentally, he has great work habits and is a grinder. His issues are that he tends to be overaggressive, he uses that big frame to intimidate but sometimes he can get burned by playing too close. He's pretty hand on which can be a plus but can also lead to penalties. He doesn't do a great job of reading routes, and when he's away from the line he doesn't do a great job of reading the ball. Overall I think what you're getting is a talented, athletic kid with all the intangibles and athleticism to be a star, but he may need a year of training in the pros to get used to the pace and work on some of his mechanics."
He's also only 20...

Reminds me of Ereck Flowers pick, young kid, great physical tools, needs technique work, but a ton of upside and potential to nail down a critical position for years. I'll go with Sy56, Te Thomas assessment ahead of the some of the armchair experts.
Did your buddy ever think that maybe if
TheBigBlueOne : 4/28/2016 10:54 pm : link
he taught Apple to cook instead of just watching him play football, Apple might have been drafted #1 overall?

LOL yeah, pretty absurd. I'm OK with it. The way I'm looking at it, I would have been happy with Hargreaves and clearly they had him rated higher. So I'll root for Eli Apple to be a great Giant.

Yes thank you for that reminder, completely irrelevant. he was along for the ride. His career was masked by a stellar pass rush.
Well we've got 1 3/4 stud DEs now, with an empty tank behind them

Plenty of smart fans don't like but of course its much easier to dismiss them as mouthbreathers to maintain your ever positive outlook on the three strait losing season team.
Toehat?
Reale01 : 4/29/2016 12:24 am : link
Toe fungus caused Apple to fall to #10. The issue is correctable. Scheduled for lazer treatment early next week at Hospital for Special Surgery.

It's easy to point out the guys who think this team never does any wrong, despite the past few seasons. Most of the decisions they make are the right ones, but it hasn't translated onto the field for awhile now. Hmmm.

David in LA : 4/29/2016 1:13 am : link
our 1st round picks haven't been the issue though. It's the injuries and whether or not we're missing the later picks or simply just not developing them.
I know most of the 1st round picks
Dave in Hoboken : 4/29/2016 1:22 am : link
have turned out alright. But alot of the other ones haven't and it's clearly hurt this team on the field. FWIW, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple turns out to be above average or there about. Just expect more from the #10 overall pick; especially more of an impact player. You admit we've had problems developing alot of these guys, yet we drafted a player whose technique needs a good deal of work. Even if we had been good at developing players over the past few years, not sure I would go that route with the 10th pick.
Dave, my observation from this offseason
David in LA : 4/29/2016 1:26 am : link
is that we expanded our coaching staff, and these new coaches all have a good background in developing young players. The new S&C conditioning coach has me pretty optimistic, I think we're going to see a much different pace to camp this year.
Hey, I hope you're right. *shrug*
Dave in Hoboken : 4/29/2016 1:27 am : link
I agree about the new S&C coach and program. Guy seems to know his stuff. Hopefully, we see an improvement with our injury situation; there's really only one direction to go in that aspect, and that is obviously, up. :)

Yeah, if he was an OL his arms would be considered short. His hands don't hang down around his knees, but his arms aren't short in proportion to his body.
