You need at least 3 solid CBs today. Apple has great measurables and is still only 20 years old. SB Nation compares him to Patrick Peterson, saying he's more raw but headed in the same direction Petersen was coming out as a big, physical press/man corner.

So much bitching, but who wouldn't sign up for that right now?
Matt M, gotta disagree with this

This is a real head scratcher pick for a guy whose job really should have been on the line.

Apple was the "cleanest" prospect. If your job is on the line, don't you think you'd take the guy with the least red flags? If my job was on the line, I would have had second thoughts about taking the guy with the gas mask lol.
Nay
Gregorio : 4/29/2016 12:24 am : link
all the talk about his measurables sound like he's not considered a starter but has plenty of upside potential. I don't like picking projects at 10.

OT Tunsil provided better value at pick 10, but, let's revisit this question 4 years from now.

mdthedream : 4/29/2016 12:25 am : link
not saying that he was the best player available but he fills a big need and he is just 20.
Don't see what the point in this is
Anakim : 4/29/2016 12:25 am : link
But I did have VH3, WJII and Mackensie Alexander as better CBs than him. I really would've liked VH3 at 10 or a trade down but alas.

Go Apple.

HugeS : 4/29/2016 12:30 am : link
Really liked Jackson over either Apple or Hargreaves. Giants could have traded down to back half of 1st for Apple. Guy is all projection since his game doesn't translate cleanly to the NFL but he is young so I'll hold out hope.
Yay
Torn Tendon : 4/29/2016 12:30 am : link
DRC gets hurt and is aging. Also teams need 3 good CB these days.

Glad Floyd was gone. Wanted Conklin, especially since Jacks might be there in the 2nd.

I think CB was a bigger need than DE, where the team still has depth with Double-O as a rusher and Wynn as a run stopper.
CB locks up another starter.
And of course...
HugeS : 4/29/2016 12:33 am : link
The stud tackle that would have kicked Newhouse right to the bench was sitting there for the taking. That's the part that really stings the most.

Gotta really question a guy that keeps something like that on his social media though. Back in college when you know your probably going to go to the draft, you delete that crap.

Kanavis : 4/29/2016 12:41 am : link
Torched too many times at the end of games last year. Faster and bigger than VH.

It's easy to say we should have traded down. But there was no enticing enough left to use as leverage.

As usual we won't really know for three years.

He didn't deny it was him but said the video was years old. He claims that his account was hacked and I think I believe him ...otherwise somebody would have found it aloooong time ago. I still would have taken him. Wherever they ended up ... Flowers at one side and Tunsil at the other? ooofah .... who really gives a shit about pot these days? Who is the target audience for the NFL anyway ...?

He's going to probably play [pretty] poorly this season while he develops; people are going to have to be patient, again.

I think you are right David , but it didn't help ... and he still got drafted at at 13? I don't know why his draft reminds my of that idiot who had a HOF career for Tampa Bay ... (Warren Sapp), but I wouldn't be surprised if Tunsil's career ended up the same way. Who knows?

Glover : 4/29/2016 2:27 am : link
Seems like they got a guy they could have gotten from 15 to 20. Might as well have drafted Shaq Lawson, or any of the top WRS, like the one who went to the Redskins and will make them better. I was against Leonard Floyd, but man, I wish he was there and the Giants didn't underwhelming so badly with this fruit.

No ... welcome to the 1950's ... STILL!
Who knows, Tunsil could be a great player
David in LA : 4/29/2016 2:53 am : link
Unfortunately for us, this is not the year to roll the dice like that. We got better today. That's all I could ask for. Look at our acquisitions. To sum it all up, we have a good trio of corners, the best run stuffer in the league, retained JPP, and hauled in the top pass rusher in FA. I wouldn't discount Landon Collins making a big leap, especially after hearing he's down to 217 and looking to get to 210. That has to help him get lighter on his feet and extend his range. Even without a standout LB, Spags has no excuses for not fielding a much better defense. After letting the dust settle, I love this pick more and more.
I like the pick more because the Dolphins wanted him at 13
George from PA : 4/29/2016 4:15 am : link
My first thought was......why not trade down.

Seems to have all the tools.
Tunsil is the only guy I was pissed we didn't take

I think Apple will be a solid Will Allen caliber player.

TheMick7 : 4/29/2016 5:37 am : link
DRC replacement down the road. My only question is (and yes I know I wasn't in the "war room") if we had Floyd,Conklin as priorities on our board, why didn't JR trade up instead of watching consecutive teams move ahead of us & take those 2 players? Apple will get better, very young, so now let's see what direction we take with #2 & #3.
Nay ...
Beer Man : 4/29/2016 5:55 am : link
The team has a huge hole on the right side of the O-Line, the best OL (and arguably the highest rated player in the draft) is sitting there at 10, and instead the team picks a project CB that they could have traded back and picked up. They fired the wrong guy this off-season.

We know the price was a 4th & JR was willing to do that for LC last year so I always find it hard to ever believe anything JR says. I watched him on MSG Network after our pick & he had "the shakes" again as he tried to explain his "take" on why he did what he did, just like he did during TC's "retirement" PC. Let's see what happens today

world class speed -- good height - and fluid movements and hips -- there were numerous issues around the other highly ranked prospects.

I like Hargreaves - but his height and coverage of tall receivers was suspect -- Apple solves that problem

I liked Treadwell but he had flaws too.

No way the Giants were going to pick Tunsil - that was broadcast already -- very telling that Stanley was drafted first and then Tenn moved up to take Conklin after being linked with Tunsil for months

If the Giants had Apple ranked higher than Hargreaves then he was the right pick at 10
Yay, The kid is only 20 and he's got game
Dave in Buffalo : 4/29/2016 6:44 am : link
He did well against strong competition, and most of the players he was going up against were older. At 20 you have to believe there's a lot more growth in his game ahead
Went from Nay
Jay in Toronto : 4/29/2016 6:52 am : link
To Yay after reading some interesting pre-draft analyses.

My Nay was also based on the belief that they could have gotten him with a lower pick. But the claims by the Giants that he wouldn't have lasted and no decent trades are offered also affected my switch.
Nay
illmatic : 4/29/2016 6:59 am : link
Nothing against the player but I don't like Apple at the 10th pick. I liked Hargreaves as a better fit too.
Yay
AnnapolisMike : 4/29/2016 7:13 am : link
I was initially thinking WTF....but Apple was not a guy I had heard much chatter about. You can't change how the top of the draft panned out with Tunsil and Jack falling out of favor. I will trust the Giants followed their board.
Yes.
Randy in CT : 4/29/2016 7:16 am : link
Remember watching him at the combine. It all adds up. The Giants graded him highest CB. And he's not Floyd.

Not talking about the moving down comment but the prospect of moving up if indeed either Floyd or Conklin was their #1 choice. Titans flipped first round picks & gave a 3rd but their 1st was 15th. Bears traded a 4th for the 9th & flipped 1sts
I say nay based on where he was picked
montanagiant : 4/29/2016 7:18 am : link
But also yay in that he is a first round talent so he should be a good player.

A very safe vanilla pick that was better suited for the 18th -26th slot in the draft

Gross Blau Oberst : 4/29/2016 8:41 am : link
Big time. Great talent, football player, demonstrated performer at a major program, area of need, less risk than the afore mentioned Jack or Floyd.

Very happy with the pick, and feel that fans will warm up to him quickly.

I like him. As I said in the draft thread, I was just surpised
Victor in CT : 4/29/2016 8:48 am : link
And I would have tried to move down for more picks, and even if Apple was gone, Decker, Lawson and Treadwell all were there late.
no idea
Les in TO : 4/29/2016 8:51 am : link
since I didn't follow college football or the draft this year, but whether he is a star like odell or a bust like cedric jones will only be judged in 5 years.
I wanted hargreaves
MotownGIANTS : 4/29/2016 9:31 am : link

Reasonable in light of how the Top 10 broke, and the defense looks much better than it did at the end of the season.
