There are others I'd prefer, yet I felt the same about beckham. It's a crap shoot in a lot of ways and while I have reservations about our front office they have a good record early. I'll be optimistic.
The Giants allowed 4700+ yards passing last year.
They added 2 DL in FA, and a starting CB.
They had Apple as the top DB in the draft....I would have preferred a trade down, but it appears there were no reasonable offers.
LB, another DE, 2nd WR, and OT (Hopefully a trade with SF for Davis!).
While he may not be a finished product, he may have the highest ceiling of any CB in the draft. His 4.4 40 at the combine, followed by the 4.34 he posted on his pro day may make him the fastest CB in the draft.
When the pick of Ramsey was made, the talk was about technique in man coverage, lack of interceptions. Therefore people should give it a rest and embrace the kid as the newest member of our Giants.
Most of BBI hated Conklin as he would be stuck at RT.
Hated Floyd because he might not be a fit.
And loved Jack who might have a ticking time bomb for a knee.
I don't follow how Apple is a bad pick or how the Giants were out maneuvered. They didn't offer enough to actually trade up or didn't try to trade up? Probably means they didn't value those other guys as much as other teams...
Tunsil is the only reason IMO people should be mad about this pick and everything around him has turned into a train wreck rather quickly.
I'd have selected Hargreaves but they needed a 3rd CB and I trust that this guy will be a better player. With the board as it was, if the pick was Hargreaves no one would said squat about that choice.
I'd rather have Tunsil but the Giants were never going to take a guy pictured smoking pot. One of the problems having old greasers as owners.
So, given that reality and getting outFoxed with Floyd, I think Eli is a very good consolation prize. Glad they did not take Hargreaves. Bust written all over him
I'm going yay. If he develops we've got a solid line and cb which makes for a decent d. You need three solid corners to be competitive in this league and he has the speed and height to match up with the top wr's.
We went into the offseason knowing we had to improve the defense. So far we have taken two huge negatives from last year and on paper turned them into big positives.
The first is the defensive line with snacks and Vernon and hopefully healthy seasons from Hankins and Jpp.
The second is our cornerback depth. Prince barely played last year and that left us incredibly thin. Drc janoris and a nice looking rookie will turn a glaring weakness into not only being adequate but being a strength.
I also think Apple has all the tools to be a great player. Size speed strength and he stayed healthy in college.
I don't think he's a terrible pick. I think he can be a decent player. He is an aggressive tackler who is excellent supporting the run and playing when the play is in front of him. However, I think his technique will get him flagged often in the NFL. Also, I do not like that he gets initially beat at the line and the bottom of routes. He is often playing catch up to receivers, which is probably why he is also grabbing as much as he is. The things he got away with in college won't fly in the NFL.
He is athletic and has the physical tools to be a good player. But, I think there were better players available at #10.
The bottom line, though, is that really for Reese to come out OK Apple has to be great. I don't see that happening. This is a real head scratcher pick for a guy whose job really should have been on the line.
You need at least 3 solid CBs today. Apple has great measurables and is still only 20 years old. SB Nation compares him to Patrick Peterson, saying he's more raw but headed in the same direction Petersen was coming out as a big, physical press/man corner.
So much bitching, but who wouldn't sign up for that right now?
This is a real head scratcher pick for a guy whose job really should have been on the line.
Apple was the "cleanest" prospect. If your job is on the line, don't you think you'd take the guy with the least red flags? If my job was on the line, I would have had second thoughts about taking the guy with the gas mask lol.
Really liked Jackson over either Apple or Hargreaves. Giants could have traded down to back half of 1st for Apple. Guy is all projection since his game doesn't translate cleanly to the NFL but he is young so I'll hold out hope.
The stud tackle that would have kicked Newhouse right to the bench was sitting there for the taking. That's the part that really stings the most.
Gotta really question a guy that keeps something like that on his social media though. Back in college when you know your probably going to go to the draft, you delete that crap.

He didn't deny it was him but said the video was years old. He claims that his account was hacked and I think I believe him ...otherwise somebody would have found it aloooong time ago. I still would have taken him. Wherever they ended up ... Flowers at one side and Tunsil at the other? ooofah .... who really gives a shit about pot these days? Who is the target audience for the NFL anyway ...?
I think you are right David , but it didn't help ... and he still got drafted at at 13? I don't know why his draft reminds my of that idiot who had a HOF career for Tampa Bay ... (Warren Sapp), but I wouldn't be surprised if Tunsil's career ended up the same way. Who knows?
Seems like they got a guy they could have gotten from 15 to 20. Might as well have drafted Shaq Lawson, or any of the top WRS, like the one who went to the Redskins and will make them better. I was against Leonard Floyd, but man, I wish he was there and the Giants didn't underwhelming so badly with this fruit.
Unfortunately for us, this is not the year to roll the dice like that. We got better today. That's all I could ask for. Look at our acquisitions. To sum it all up, we have a good trio of corners, the best run stuffer in the league, retained JPP, and hauled in the top pass rusher in FA. I wouldn't discount Landon Collins making a big leap, especially after hearing he's down to 217 and looking to get to 210. That has to help him get lighter on his feet and extend his range. Even without a standout LB, Spags has no excuses for not fielding a much better defense. After letting the dust settle, I love this pick more and more.
I like the pick more because the Dolphins wanted him at 13
Well unless you can name them it really doesn't mean too much. There are usually a handful of first round players out of thirty that will shine.
I don't get criticism of players at this point. The Giants thought he was the best DB when they picked.

But if Tunsil becomes the dominant pro tackle he was hyped to be and Eli gets injured because our line blows, well...

Hope it works out.

yep, its going to be Meh. Another pretty good JAG.

OT Tunsil provided better value at pick 10, but, let's revisit this question 4 years from now.
Go Apple.
Glad Floyd was gone. Wanted Conklin, especially since Jacks might be there in the 2nd.
I think CB was a bigger need than DE, where the team still has depth with Double-O as a rusher and Wynn as a run stopper.
CB locks up another starter.

It's easy to say we should have traded down. But there was no enticing enough left to use as leverage.
As usual we won't really know for three years.
This guy will be a backup corner his whole career.

Dream of what exactly? Having your first round pick suspended or out of the league within 3-4 years?
He's going to probably play [pretty] poorly this season while he develops; people are going to have to be patient, again.

No ... welcome to the 1950's ... STILL!
Seems to have all the tools.
I think Apple will be a solid Will Allen caliber player.
So yay with a little bit of meh.
