Hard time going to sleep last night after Apple Picking...

M.S. : 4/29/2016 5:53 am
...not gonna argue for a nano-second where this guy coulda, shoulda, woulda gone, nor whether or not Jerry Reese got out maneuvered by Titans and Bucs and thereby lost his two key targets.

All of the above is pure speculation and I ain't gonna do it.

But deep down, this is what pisses me off about last night. IMO, what you saw was a Giants team severely hemmed in by the inadequacy of its own roster and the crying need for players at so many positions.

We had no legitimate 3rd cornerback on this team and there are question marks around DRC, including whether or not his body will hold up over a 16-game schedule. So, you can say Eli Apple was the best value on the Giants Board... but he was also a pick to fill a crying need.

Selecting Eli Apple is also symptomatic of a team that cannot afford to take any risks whatsoever with a player like Tunsil -- an absolute better value pick than Apple and at a position that also needs shoring up -- tackle.

And there was no room for Jerry Reese to maneuver because he is the last General Manager in the NFL who can afford to surrender any draft picks.

So, it was a rough night going to sleep thinking of a team with zero draft flexibility with so many needs and so few picks to fill them all.

At least we had the good sense

Not to trade up for Floyd. I feel better about that. I don't think Apple would have gotten past Tampa. Do not believe Hargraves was their first choice.
Hard time going to sleep?

I have been a fan for 45 years and I heard the pick, went to my bedroom, and I am guessing I was asleep before Apple held his jersey up.

If you have so many positions of need
NorwoodWideRight : 4/29/2016 6:27 am : link
You trade down and fill the roster with up and comers who can grow into their roles. But Reese refuses to do that. It's always about "BPA." Only this was arguably not the BPA.

If it's causing you to lose sleep then you are taking it much too seriously, and we fans have no way to control what the team does.
I don't discount the need for a third CB.....

However, if you are selecting Apple so you can let DRC go a year from now then is that really progress? To me it's treading water. I will feel the same way if they select a DT in the second or third to replace Hankins.

I slept like a f'ing baby. It was the OP that was struggling. Giants have transformed their defense this offseason and that includes a young stud CB with tremendous upside.

All the armchair wizards on here don't know $hit.
also if the Giants needed a LT
Reb8thVA : 4/29/2016 6:44 am : link
I think they may have gambled on Tunsil. However, they are set on Flowers at LT and don't want to move him. That and his baggage probably made Tunsil not worth the gamble for Reese.
I was 100% amped for the draft until tonight
illmatic : 4/29/2016 6:50 am : link
but once the Giants picked Apple, I basically turned it off and went to sleep out of disappointment and boredom.

Among the many mysteries to me... why did Reese go out of his way so many times talking up Ereck Flowers as our left tackle. Just to re-assure the young man? Geez... by saying what he did, he gave away draft information IMO.
Like I said to my son

The Giants got hemmed in again and just sat and watched the chips go by and fall short of their spot on the board. Then they made their oh shit what do we do now pick. That's what it seemed like to me. Then I turned my full attention to the Caps Pens. Hey, he may be really good. We'll see.
Many of you fail to realize
Larry in Pencilvania : 4/29/2016 8:28 am : link
That the roster is fluid and the draft is for the future. You have to be ready and have a plan for next year and the following. The GIANTS bombed on so many mid and late round picks that they don't have young players ready to step in. Almost any pick at this stage is a need. They needed a third cb and someone to replace DRC down the road. They were never going to fill all needs in one draft, even if they traded down.

As far as sleep goes why would you worry yourself over something you can't control? Sounds foolish to me

For all you know Tunsil was not that high on their board.

This is why everyone needs to kill all that noise. Besides the fact he has baggage. Heavy baggage. Some one is actively trying to destroy that mans life and he's about to have a done of negative publicity with admitting to taking money from Ol Miss.

It wasn't going to happen. It's over. We drafted a hell of a player and if Apple is a consultation prize he's a hell of pick.
I was happy with the pick...
x meadowlander : 4/29/2016 8:38 am : link
...yes, CB was a need pick, BUT like OL, it's a position where you need multiple HIGH QUALITY players. Giants had 2 solid players at a position where you really need FOUR. Cause one of those sonsabitches is ALWAYS hurt.

It was a position that had to be filled in this draft - kid will take a year or so to change his game - that grabby shit won't fly in the NFL - but I like his aggression, LOVE that he's an able tackler. Should be a solid player for the Giants for years.

Now - Jack if he's there - definitely - or get me an OL. Please!

I know, my post was directed at the OP.
MS, I agree with you. The roster is bereft of talent,
yatqb : 4/29/2016 8:44 am : link
we only had 6 picks so couldn't afford to trade up, and the Apple pick was the result. And if the team lets DRC and Hankins go next year we are certainly treading water, as Reb says...and as we did when we let Linval Joseph go, only to replace him with the year before's 2nd rounder.
I was out like a light
micky : 4/29/2016 8:56 am : link
woke up about 3 am in pain...but not from giants pic...but bone pain. That'll only thing these days that'll keep me awake. Not a draft pick.

Despite speculation, let's not assume DRC is gone after the year. He's STILL at the top of his game and at worst we'll restructure. I'd rather take a chance on that over Myles Jack's knee..Don't buy into the spec
After OT was the HIGHEST NEED.
x meadowlander : 4/29/2016 9:13 am : link
Seriously - you CANNOT bank on a 5-man and a 4-man unit staying healthy all year, behind the starters on both units, it's ugly.

Still, I would love to see the Giants land Jack in Rd. 2.
That's the stupidest thing I've read in the last 24 hours
jcn56 : 4/29/2016 9:15 am : link
They were hemmed in by need?!

If anything - having needs across the roster make the draft a whole lot easier. The more you need, the easier it is to make a case for picking the highest ranked guy on the board, since he's likely to also be filling a need.

No disrespect whatsoever... but "hemmed in by need" expresses precisely the Giants dilemma IMHO.
