NFT: Mets talk 4/29 Bring on the Giants!

ZGiants98 : 4/29/2016 8:29 am
Mets have won 6 straight.

Conforto getting praise all around the league.

Is he a young Barry Bonds, without as much power? a talent evaluator asked after studying Conforto. But he might show more power as time goes on.

Wright saying he got out of sorts by relying on a subtle leg kick. Working on adjustment.

Jake Peavy takes on Steven Matz at Citi tonight!

Love seeing this. ZERO HR too. For some reason people think we can ONLY score via the long ball. WRONG.

This is awesome though.

in little league we were the Indians and the Mets would score at least 12 runs each inning against us, so would the Clippers, Reds, and Blue Jays.
Wow

Plawecki vs TDA
Vanzetti : 4/30/2016 12:23 am : link
I don't know how many saw it but on the Mets broadcast they did a side by side video comparison of the two catchers throwing to second. Wasn't close. Plawecki is up and letting the ball go much quicker.

Everyone kept saying the opposition is stealing on the pitchers. Well, Plawecki has thron out 5 of 8 with the same staff that TDA has thrown out 3 of 17 with.

Plawecki's throw to nail Belt tonight was perfect. Belt had that base stolen and KP nailed him with a great throw.
What's weird to me
Vanzetti : 4/30/2016 12:25 am : link
Is TDA was known for his defense in the minors, whereas D was considered a concern for PLawecki when he was drafted
TDA has just been completely out of whack
ZGiants98 : 4/30/2016 12:36 am : link
Wouldn't be surprised at all if the shoulder contributed to how awful his throws have been. They were mostly fine last year. That Syndergaard game, even people at the game said the runners were sliding into 2B before the pitch even got to the catcher though.
Wow. I was so into the draft last night that I wasn't thinking about
Ira : 4/30/2016 7:04 am : link
the Mets. 12 run inning. It must have been great to be at the park.

I watched that entire game and this statement isn't true at all. Noah didn't do a great job at holding the runners on but Let's not make excuses for how bad TdA was/has been. They were running because of TdA, not Syndergaard.
Lol everyone here watched that entire game
ZGiants98 : 4/30/2016 12:18 pm : link
Thanks for your opinion. My opinion is that it was a combination of both at BEST. In fact, the Reds were still running the following day with Plawecki so clearly the catcher didn't have a lot to do with their game plan. I repeat, TDA's throws were laughable in that game, but Kieth/Ron( who you quote all the time) and people I had sitting 3 rows up on the first base line said the bags in that particular game were completely stolen before TDA had a chance.
Tda's defense has been an issue for 3 years
Eric on Li : 4/30/2016 12:25 pm : link
it is no shock to see Plawecki look a lot better immediately. Just like it's no shock to Cabrera and Walker look great compared to what we'd been used to. Same as Flores looking better than Wright. It may sound obvious but it's very rare for players to be positive contributors both offensively and defensively, usually it's one or the other. It's all about fitting the right pieces together and to do that there needs to be objective evaluation - which is why I think there's a reasonable chance Plawecki seizes a big chunk of playing time at catcher going forward because in 3 years the most consistent things about Tda are injuries and bad defense (to his credit 3rd on that list is a wicked offensive hot streak after gaining confidence in the minors).
I disagree
ZGiants98 : 4/30/2016 12:29 pm : link
Like others have mentioned TDA was a good defense catcher in the minors and actually is STILL considered the better athlete. And TDA was NOT bad defensively last year. If you consider above average bad then I don't know what to tell you. TDA is a bit of a head case IMO. Lot of mental stuff going on with him. Either way, Plawecki needs to hit a whole hell of a lot more than he's shown or his ass will be back riding the pine the moment TDA is healthy.
Syndergaard, Harvey, and deGrom
ZGiants98 : 4/30/2016 12:30 pm : link
all need to do a much better job at keeping runners on base or we will see teams testing us all year. They are absolutely not blameless.
Yeah, well, my opinion and apparently everyone elses
PhiPsi125 : 4/30/2016 12:41 pm : link
But that's cool if you want to share equal blame, AT BEST, on the pitcher and catcher.

But saying that the runners were sliding in the 2B before the pitch even got to the catcher is just a flat out lie.

Keith and Ron...I've probably quoted maybe twice, probably once. But sure, keep on with the exaggerations. By the way, Keith and Ron never said that they were sliding into 2B before the pitch got the catcher. They did, however, talk about the big jumps they got. Context. It does wonders for credibility.
Last year he was 31st out of 35 catchers in DRS & overall defense (FG)
Eric on Li : 4/30/2016 12:50 pm : link
that's out of guys who had at least 550 innings (TdA had 569). He was also 29th in CS among all those players, but obviously that's skewed by him being injured.

Do we even need to evaluate how he did in the postseason and that it's continued this year? I mean we can act like scouting reports, advanced stats, minor league performance, and athleticism matter but it's a pretty simple binary observation that he has been a huge weakness.

Holy shit. You thought I was saying they were actually standing on the bag? Jesus man I was exaggerating for emphasis. I was just trying to say they got ridiculously good jumps and had the bases stolen before TDA had a chance. lol. And everybody else? It was pretty much universally agreed in that game the runners were running on Syndergaard.

Dan and I and anyone that knows a damn thing about metrics knows that catching is basically worthless. They have a LONG ways to go. Ive said this here a million times so lets not act like Im being inconsistent now. He was above average throwing out runners last year. He completely cleaned up the passed balls from the year prior. What's left? His range on ops-ups? "Ignore catching metrics"
Wow!
ZGiants98 : 4/30/2016 1:14 pm : link
And i just looked and TDA had a POSITIVE DEF grade on fangraphs. 3.9! He's actually positive this year too. LOL.
I have no problem saying the metrics don't matter
Eric on Li : 4/30/2016 1:16 pm : link
but his throwing sucked and he was exposed in the postseason. I don't care what his throwing % was in half of a season, that can be skewed by a number of factors since not that many teams steal bases. In the postseason he was taken advantage of, just as he was so far this season.
Ranking players by who was best
ZGiants98 : 4/30/2016 1:17 pm : link
Is fucking stupid and you know that. We've been through this. If there are 20 SS that qualify it is entirely possibly 18 out of 20 are good defensively. Which is why you DO NOT rank them. Unless of course you have an agenda.
"the metrics don't matter!" to "he has a positive grade!" in 5 minutes
Eric on Li : 4/30/2016 1:17 pm : link
probably not a new record for you, but maybe close.

Again. His throwing was above average last year. That's a fact. No debate. No metrics involved.

They don't. I HATE catching metrics. They use exactly 3 things to weight the grade and a catcher has MANY more factors involved. Its just funny that he graded positively anyway.
Not going to fight with you guys all day over
ZGiants98 : 4/30/2016 1:23 pm : link
TDA. The Mets are beating the shit out of teams. Be happy. Do we always have to complain about something?? TDA's throws were awful this year(baby small sample) and he wasn't hitting either. He needs to get it together if he even makes it back healthy. I know that. As for Plawecki. He needs to hit better. Maybe last night was a start.
