Giants big believers that you can generally teach technique

Coach Mason : 4/29/2016 8:49 am
but can't teach size, speed and change of direction. JPP, Flowers Apple all pretty good 1st round examples of this. Hargreaves was the more polished of the top 2 CBs but not nearly the same size-speed combination. The trick in all this is the athletiscm part and desire to learn/character. Does Flowers and or Apple lack the athletiscm to be fluid enough to execute the proper techniques for success at their respective positions? The both seem to be high character guys willing to learn.
I agree with you coach

After I thought about it, this kid has all the measurables. He just has to be taught to not be so grabby. I think it can be done. Kid has size, speed ratio. Hopefully he can master his position.

The desire to learn and high character are key...all you need to know is the mom's quote..."nobody is going to outwork Eli Apple"...feel a lot better about this pick after I had a night to sleep on it...

was too grabby when he came out as well and he turned out to be a very good pick who was derailed only by injuries.
This is why

Apple seems very similar to Flowers to me. Both young, talented players from good programs who have the right intangibles but who need to improve on their technique. They are not projects in the sense that they can probably contribute somewhat right away but would be expected to progress rapidly over the first two years of their contracts. Still unclear if Flowers will progress this way and also unclear for Apple, but both have a high ceiling with a reasonably good floor.
I don't think being grabby is technique

I think it's more innate than that. I hope it can be somewhat lessened but I fear that it will always be an issue at the most inopportune of times.

That's been my observation as well. Once a grabby CB always a grabby CB. It's just his style, it's in his nature, it's a tool he uses to defend the play much too often.

You can teach a QB throwing motion and footwork
Ten Ton Hammer : 4/29/2016 9:47 am : link
of course you can teach a corner not to grab. You do that with experience, since grabbing is generally a panic reaction to thinking you're getting beat, and by improving positioning so the need to feel like you have to get hands on doesn't arise.
Guess where Tim Walton played college football?

Yup, Ohio State University! He's also a very accomplished secondary coach and so, I think, if anybody can get Apple's flaws straightened out, he can. Hopefully Apple is a good student too.

IMO, Apple should have stayed in school another year and gained more experience, but he'll be trying to learn now on the run?!
if you're Apple and you can

potentially be a top 10-20 pick, who in their right mind would go back to school, risk injury, drop in draft, etc.?

It was a smart business decision. He'll be coached up and he can always go back and finish his degree later.

Only 2 years of CFB for Apple. He has absolutely excellent numbers/production when you consider they were his freshman and sophomore years
