The main issue seems to be passing on Tunsil and Jack. Obviously Jack's knee is far bigger issue than originally though. I love Jack as a prospect and have been on that bandwagon since early on, but I have no issue with passing on him after seeing the way his medical reports played out. Tunsil I probably would've drafted, but he was clearly red flagged by a bunch of teams.
Besides Tunsil though, I don't see all the outrage about Apple being a "Reach".
Eli Apple -- CB
Vernon Hargreaves -- CB
Sheldon Rankins -- DT
Karl Joseph -- S
Corey Coleman -- WR
Taylor Decker -- OT
Keanu Neal -- S
Ryan Kelly -- C
Shaq Lawson -- DE/ER
Darron Lee -- OLB
Will Fuller -- WR
Josh Doctson -- WR
Laquon Treadwell -- WR
Those are the next dozen picks after Apple.
Who would you guys have drafted at our pick among the guys available BESIDES TUNSIL? Also, where would you rank Apple on your wishlist at our pick?
For example... I would've selected Corey Coleman at our spot (hi KWALL). I would've ranked Eli Apple 3rd after Coleman and Rankins on my wishlist.
32 teams were very afraid
I expected Lawson if there wasn't an issue with his shoulder or Doctson when Conklin was gone at #10. Doctson will light it up this yearand would have transformed our passing game! With Ifedi gone, I hope we get Spriggs (OT) at #40.
Agreed. If forced to pick, I would have taken Treadwell or Rankins.
The NY Giants invest the time, effort and resources for an entire year preparing for this. It's not as if Apple going in Round 1 was a surprise to anyone. He just went a little earlier than expected. The Giants value triangle numbers and his are superior to Hargreaves so maybe we shouldn't be surprised at all in hindsight that if they were going CB at #10, which was always a strong possibility, it could be Apple or William Jackson III.
I'm satisfied with the pick and now we get to see our 2016 1st Rounder in blue. Go Giants!
The Giants identified Apple as the guy they wanted and they couldn't get him by trading back. I was surprised but the Tunsil video threw a huge wrench in things and had a major trickle down effect. We went with our board and took the highest rated player without issues. The strategy was sound in my opinion and I'm fine with it. CB was still a major need and a premium position.
My next choice would have been Hargreaves, but I can't really complain there either because he plays the same position as the guy we took. I trust the Giants ability to project which guy will be better more than my own.
And considering Jack is still available, he would've been the gigantic "reach" at #10.
I think most would've preferred a trade down (as usual), but without knowing what (if any) offers were on the table, it's impossible to evaluate that scenario.
I still think passing on Tunsil was a big mistake, though.
This^^^
Apple over Hargreaves I get - but I also thought Treadwell might have gone here in the alternative - however the Giants ranked Eli Apple higher than Hargreaves -- so in the final analysis that explains/justifies the pick very well
I just don't see Odell being able to do what he does best against defenses without a strong WR on the other side.
And imagine if Odell missed even a few games? Who would Eli throw it to?
IMO, a strong # 2 WR was our biggest weakness leading up to the draft.
but I doubt it.....I believe they really wanted Floyd (which seems very difficult for me to believe, as I do not see it).
I'm not one of them, because I know what I don't know, many here do not.
I don't think the Apple pick necessarily was a bad one.
That said, I don't think you could have gone wrong with Apple there given what transpired. Underwhelming/unsexy pick? Sure maybe but the goal is to draft good football players and Apple from all indications will be exactly that.
Anyone who questions Apple as the pick, do yourself (and the rest of us) a favor and read some of the scout reviews, specifically the one by Dave on this board.
Apple was rising all week and its just my opinion here but seems to me the thinking is the Giants might have just got another "Beckham like steal" on the defensive side.
Thanks Hosley.
Thanks Hosley.
I know trusting tape they show during the draft is dangerous, because you are cherry picking a few plays with the players at their best/worst but man the tape ESPN showed on Hargreaves just eviscerated him. He was getting beaten like a drum 40-50 yards downfield. Thats a top 10 pick? Sure Apple is too handsy for the NFL right now, but that's something you can coach out of him. Desire and effort is not something you can teach.
Same here. Our o-line yet again had to be the priority here and if you can't fill it at that pick trade back. As it was we could have traded back and maybe still got Apple.
But Tunsil was the perfect solution to the o-line situation so that's why I am thoroughly disgusted with the pick. And that even after I promised myself I would like whoever JR picked this time.

is the only player that upset me. Take Tunsil or trade back.

Well you need to read more on your boy Tunsil, it wasn’t just his character concerns that caused him to slide.
Also despite all contrary for needs. CB actually was a need and Apple is being hailed as the top CB in the draft (Ramsey as a safety)
so basically chill and let your thorough disgust chill
