Who would you have drafted (besides Tunsil)?

Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 4/29/2016 9:55 am
The main issue seems to be passing on Tunsil and Jack. Obviously Jack's knee is far bigger issue than originally though. I love Jack as a prospect and have been on that bandwagon since early on, but I have no issue with passing on him after seeing the way his medical reports played out. Tunsil I probably would've drafted, but he was clearly red flagged by a bunch of teams.

Besides Tunsil though, I don't see all the outrage about Apple being a "Reach".

Eli Apple -- CB

Vernon Hargreaves -- CB
Sheldon Rankins -- DT
Karl Joseph -- S
Corey Coleman -- WR
Taylor Decker -- OT
Keanu Neal -- S
Ryan Kelly -- C
Shaq Lawson -- DE/ER
Darron Lee -- OLB
Will Fuller -- WR
Josh Doctson -- WR
Laquon Treadwell -- WR

Those are the next dozen picks after Apple.

Who would you guys have drafted at our pick among the guys available BESIDES TUNSIL? Also, where would you rank Apple on your wishlist at our pick?

For example... I would've selected Corey Coleman at our spot (hi KWALL). I would've ranked Eli Apple 3rd after Coleman and Rankins on my wishlist.
I would have taken Coleman as well...

Maybe a reach but I definitely believe he'd have a bigger impact on our team than Apple will.
Jack
superspynyg : 4/29/2016 9:57 am : link
I'm not afraid of his medical. I see 5 great years with us rookie contract he could be a multi probowler in those years.
I may have traded back
dep026 : 4/29/2016 9:57 am : link
into the 20s for a WR.

32 teams were very afraid

I expected Lawson if there wasn't an issue with his shoulder or Doctson when Conklin was gone at #10. Doctson will light it up this yearand would have transformed our passing game! With Ifedi gone, I hope we get Spriggs (OT) at #40.
Hargreaves
PaulN : 4/29/2016 10:01 am : link
Seemed to me to be the obvious pick, but the Giants obviously liked Apple, I always figure the Giants know better then me so I am OK with this pick. The player I would have given thought to there with the way the drafty unfolded was Rankins though.

Agreed. If forced to pick, I would have taken Treadwell or Rankins.

Probably Hargreaves although I'm higher on Treadwell than most.
Hargreaves
Torrag : 4/29/2016 10:06 am : link
...but JR said it...we like Hargreaves but we like our guy better, case closed.

The NY Giants invest the time, effort and resources for an entire year preparing for this. It's not as if Apple going in Round 1 was a surprise to anyone. He just went a little earlier than expected. The Giants value triangle numbers and his are superior to Hargreaves so maybe we shouldn't be surprised at all in hindsight that if they were going CB at #10, which was always a strong possibility, it could be Apple or William Jackson III.

I'm satisfied with the pick and now we get to see our 2016 1st Rounder in blue. Go Giants!

arcarsenal : 4/29/2016 10:08 am : link
Coleman is the only guy I would have considered but I still feel like 10 was too high to take him. I really didn't feel like there was any WR in this class worthy of a top 10 pick. It's not a strong group. The 2014 class absolutely destroys this one.

The Giants identified Apple as the guy they wanted and they couldn't get him by trading back. I was surprised but the Tunsil video threw a huge wrench in things and had a major trickle down effect. We went with our board and took the highest rated player without issues. The strategy was sound in my opinion and I'm fine with it. CB was still a major need and a premium position.
Tunsil
Steve in South Jersey : 4/29/2016 10:08 am : link
is the only player that upset me. Take Tunsil or trade back.
In the moment I would have said Jack
Lopes1984 : 4/29/2016 10:09 am : link
but after seeing everyone else in the league pass on him, I have changed my stance on it. Clearly it is a big enough issue that every team was afraid to take him.

My next choice would have been Hargreaves, but I can't really complain there either because he plays the same position as the guy we took. I trust the Giants ability to project which guy will be better more than my own.
Lawson, Decker, Treadwell or Lee
sb from NYT Forum : 4/29/2016 10:10 am : link
In that order of pref. I'd have been happy with any of them over a 20 year old, high upside, physical specimen that needs coaching to reach his potential.
......
CoughlinHandsonHips : 4/29/2016 10:10 am : link
Once it got to the Gmen's pick I had predicted Treadwell. He went in the 20s so shows what I know
Hargreaves
illmatic : 4/29/2016 10:11 am : link
With Treadwell/Doctson a notch below him. I guess I'd have Apple a little after that in range with a guy like Decker.
would've been Hargreaves for me
giants#1 : 4/29/2016 10:12 am : link
but considering the Giants passed on him for Apple and Reese's track record on 1st round picks, I have no issue with Apple.

And considering Jack is still available, he would've been the gigantic "reach" at #10.

I think most would've preferred a trade down (as usual), but without knowing what (if any) offers were on the table, it's impossible to evaluate that scenario.
if they simply weren't going to draft Tunsil, and apparently they
Greg from LI : 4/29/2016 10:13 am : link
weren't, then Apple's as good as anyone else. I would have been fine with Hargreaves, but they like Apple's upside better due to his size and athletic advantage on VH, and that's fine.

I still think passing on Tunsil was a big mistake, though.

This^^^

Apple over Hargreaves I get - but I also thought Treadwell might have gone here in the alternative - however the Giants ranked Eli Apple higher than Hargreaves -- so in the final analysis that explains/justifies the pick very well

I would have taken
YANKEE28 : 4/29/2016 10:16 am : link
WR Josh Doctson.

I just don't see Odell being able to do what he does best against defenses without a strong WR on the other side.

And imagine if Odell missed even a few games? Who would Eli throw it to?

IMO, a strong # 2 WR was our biggest weakness leading up to the draft.
NO....the main issue is that everyone knows who we want
George from PA : 4/29/2016 10:16 am : link
could it be that the Giants send out false rumors, maybe.

but I doubt it.....I believe they really wanted Floyd (which seems very difficult for me to believe, as I do not see it).

If they were completely against drafting Tunsil,
shockeyisthebest8056 : 4/29/2016 10:17 am : link
I'm happy with the Apple pick. Outside of Tunsil, there wasn't one single player who got drafted after 10 that I was envious of.
Decker or Lawson
BigBlueCane : 4/29/2016 10:17 am : link
to finish working on the lines.
The critics
joeinpa : 4/29/2016 10:37 am : link
will suggest the Giants got out maneuvered and that it shouldn't have come down to taking a risk with Jack or Tunsil.

I'm not one of them, because I know what I don't know, many here do not.
I wonder what the offer Reese rejecte was
Reb8thVA : 4/29/2016 10:42 am : link
but for the sake of argument assume it was the Dolphins, I might have made that trade and taken Decker.

I don't think the Apple pick necessarily was a bad one.
Not relevant
Carl in CT : 4/29/2016 10:42 am : link
As we would have had a different (earlier) player had we shut our mouths so everyone knew to trade up and fuck us. That's the freakin point!
I would have went with treadwell even at 10
GMenLTS : 4/29/2016 10:44 am : link
I think his floor is brandon marshall and that's a perfect compliment to OBJ

That said, I don't think you could have gone wrong with Apple there given what transpired. Underwhelming/unsexy pick? Sure maybe but the goal is to draft good football players and Apple from all indications will be exactly that.
Treadwell
Paulie Walnuts : 4/29/2016 10:46 am : link
or Lawson
Apple was my top CB
Phil in LA : 4/29/2016 10:49 am : link
And was fine, would have been fine with Decker, too, who I had right up with Conklin.
the more I read on Apple the more
Rory : 4/29/2016 10:52 am : link
I'm beginning to think Floyd was a smokescreen and Apple was #2 on the draft board all along.

Anyone who questions Apple as the pick, do yourself (and the rest of us) a favor and read some of the scout reviews, specifically the one by Dave on this board.

Apple was rising all week and its just my opinion here but seems to me the thinking is the Giants might have just got another "Beckham like steal" on the defensive side.

I am so glad they didn't take Hargreaves
Mason : 4/29/2016 11:07 am : link
I wasn't going to knock him so much before the draft because there was a possibility I would have to cheer for him for the next for years but I'm done with short corners for awhile that run slower than they should.

Thanks Hosley.
Papa made a great point this AM on the opening drive
Stu11 : 4/29/2016 11:07 am : link
basically our opinions are shaped by all these "expert" mocks. When you look at it though they have multiple guys like Ragland, Robinson and Jack that were sure 1st rounders still sitting out there, so how much should we really worship these "experts"? He wasn't saying Apple was a great pick, he was just saying you have to wait and see.
Hargreaves
UConn4523 : 4/29/2016 11:10 am : link

I know trusting tape they show during the draft is dangerous, because you are cherry picking a few plays with the players at their best/worst but man the tape ESPN showed on Hargreaves just eviscerated him. He was getting beaten like a drum 40-50 yards downfield. Thats a top 10 pick? Sure Apple is too handsy for the NFL right now, but that's something you can coach out of him. Desire and effort is not something you can teach.

Same here. Our o-line yet again had to be the priority here and if you can't fill it at that pick trade back. As it was we could have traded back and maybe still got Apple.

But Tunsil was the perfect solution to the o-line situation so that's why I am thoroughly disgusted with the pick. And that even after I promised myself I would like whoever JR picked this time.

Well you need to read more on your boy Tunsil, it wasn’t just his character concerns that caused him to slide.

Also despite all contrary for needs. CB actually was a need and Apple is being hailed as the top CB in the draft (Ramsey as a safety)

so basically chill and let your thorough disgust chill
I guess Doctson would have been the guy I picked.
Ira : 4/29/2016 11:58 am : link
I think he's going to be the best wideout in the draft.
I would have gone with either Hargreaves or

Decker. If wanted to roll the dice a bit maybe Lawson.
votes so far...

Hargreaves --- 8 votes
Apple -------- 6.5
Treadwell ---- 3.5
Lawson ------- 3
Doctson ------ 2.5
Coleman ------ 2
Rankins ------ 2
Decker ------- 2
