Big Picture | Defense - Huge Upgrade

DavidinBMNY : 4/29/2016 12:59 pm
1) JPP playing Over JPP on IR
2) Vernon Over Ayers
3) Snacks Over Jenkins
4) Jenkins Over Prince
5) Apple Over Wade/McBridge/Hosley

This Defense goes from being a laughing stock to at least being competitive.

This doesn't even factor in the what if's. A string of what if's never actually all happen. But there are a lot you can dream up for the defense regarding the rest of the roster.

Time to invest in Offense. There are fewer What if cards (Cruz/Hart?) play and no actual upgrades.
The only concern I have with the defense now
Jay on the Island : 4/29/2016 1:03 pm : link
is at FS and Spags. Spags has all the weapons he needs to have a top 10 defense especially if young players like Odi, Collins, Kennard, Berhe, and Bromley improve.
The defense has added a healthy JPP, Berhe, Jackson, Hankins to go along with Vernon, Harrison, Jenkins, Apple, and Robinson. There is more talent on defense than the Giants have had in a while.

Yep, we still have work to do with the LineBackers and Safeties, but progress has certainly been made.

Spags has no excuses. His resume in recent years has quite frankly been pathetic. But he has legit assets on that side of the ball to play with now, can't wait to see it.

Bennett/Berhe better then Merriweather

Hanlon better then injured Hankins

Kennard better then Kennard replacement

if I am QB I target Apple for the PI and automatic 1st ....
The 2nd level AKA the Linebackers still suck
Torrag : 4/29/2016 1:16 pm : link
Su's Cravens #40 would go a long way to balancing things out.

Pat is really working on his game
Our LBs are fine
ANGPASS : 4/29/2016 1:33 pm : link
But i would take Jack because we would have a game breaking playmaker at ever unit. But i would still want an edge rusher but would be happy with an OL or WR.
Huge?
averagejoe : 4/29/2016 1:36 pm : link
An improvement but our defense is scaring nobody. Will Kennard or Behrle or OO stay on the field this year? Or do we just assume they have improved on IR?

I think the upgrade has been from horrific to shaky. Still no pass rushers that scare anyone.
defense still needs help
xman : 4/29/2016 1:38 pm : link
thats howe pathetic they were and have been. Our LB's are still the bottom of the barrel and the Safety situation is uncomfortable. Sorry to have to dump on offense but you cannot trot out that group of misfits on defense and expect to win

Top 10? Hell no. The defense certainly improved. But, they were dead last and one of the historically worst defenses last year. I think, realistically, this D can improve the tune of middle of the pack, ranked in the high teens.
'Our LBs are fine'...
Torrag : 4/29/2016 1:42 pm : link
...LOL. They are the furthest thing from fine. There isn't a playmaker in that unit and hasn't been since AP lost his edge.
Better yes
arniefez : 4/29/2016 1:44 pm : link
good enough to be a playoff team? Probably not yet. There is still a lack of coverage LB's. The Giants have been killed on 3rd down for years. Their sub LB's run like OL's. The Giants need speed at LB for 3rd downs. They need nickel and dime LB's. Yes I know those terms refer to DB's. But you get my point.
Free Safety
PaulN : 4/29/2016 1:47 pm : link
Is not nearly the concern it was, we now have a better pass rush, a better set of corners, the strong safety is now a good player, I have a feeling that this defense will be a lot better by mid season then we saw last season, I am really excited now, we were just horrible last season. It was embarrassing, now we have a defense to rally behind.
I approve of this thread
ArcadeSlumlord : 4/29/2016 1:52 pm : link
but if Unga plays a single meaningful snap at LB this season, then we have failed miserably this offseason.
we have a long way to go on our defense
mdc1 : 4/29/2016 1:56 pm : link
btw...last nights pick was not exactly a difference maker as a #1.

christian : 4/29/2016 1:59 pm : link
I'll hunt down the actual number if I have time later, but at many points in the season opposing QBs had the most time to throw per pass in the NFL.

Any improvement in that number will make the back 7 look a lot better. Thomas and Casillas are good tacklers. So is Colllins.

Having to literally keep coverage longer than any back 7 in the NFL was the main problem.
going from awful to average
DavidinBMNY : 4/29/2016 3:59 pm : link
Is a huge upgrade. And average defense is much more enjoyable to watch.

We only had Thomas and Cassilas for 1 year. Kennard dealt with injury again last year. We just signed 2 ILB's, Collins is starting his 2nd year, Mykkele Thompson is healthy (keep your fingers crossed) and Taylor Cooper is still healthy. It isn't all bad!
'It isn't all bad!'...
Torrag : 4/29/2016 5:46 pm : link
...I agree it isn't. We've improved our defense. But our linebacker corps is still one of the worst in the entire NFL. Robinson, Shepard and a possibly healthy Kennard don't change that. We also don't have a FS worth a damn on the roster. There's still work to do on this side of the ball. Hopefully we can add another legit piece tonight.
If the Dline

plays as well as they should it will cover up some of the deficiencies behind them.

My concern as well... That kind of mugging wont fly in the NFL -
I think that Robinson and Sheppard can help at LB, but it
yatqb : 4/29/2016 5:57 pm : link
would be nice to get a stud one of these years. Still holes at LB and possibly FS, perhaps 3rd DE.
