for a year... watch out. WR goes from a question mark (aside from Beckham) to a major strength instantly.
The Giants aren't signing Boldin
He seems like the type of crusty old vet they would sign short term. Can't rely on a rookie to perform like a starter for a full year.
I know what Boldin's said about signing with a contender, but the potential fire power of this offense if he comes on board, could be both exciting to him as well as being enough to overcome some deficiencies on the D to make a run for the prize.
Plus there's got to be SOME satisfaction to mentoring such a talented WR corps.
This is a great pick. We are going to love this guy. The second coming of Steve Smith but with more talent. Outside or inside, long or short, before or after the catch, he can get it done. More talented players for the talent positions. 2 for 2.
I doubt it. Cruz seems like the epitome of a team guy, the sort who will help Shepard as much as possible.
I didn't say Victor was a DICK or unprofessional. I do think Shep is at his best in the slot and I seriously doubt Victor can play on the outside anymore. The Giants would've been foolish to put all of their eggs (or even a few) in Victor's basket. But he has to be feeling a bit sick now.
and with Harris as the #4WR, that's a pretty damn good WR corp.
My take is this pick ADDS to the value of Cruz.
Optimistically we all hope Victor comes back healthy and is able to contribute, but realistically we also know he won't be the Victor of a few years ago.
In a 3 WR set with OBJ and Shepard, Cruz should be able to clean up. Clearly he won't draw the opposition's best CB.
This may be a unique combination, and Eli's dream; 3 great route runners, with the football smarts to be in the right place at the right time, all with decent hands, paired with an intellectual QB. It's like Peyton with 3 Marvin Harrisons. (OK I exaggerate but you get the point.)
Don't forget Dable and Davis....they're both bigger receivers with good hands too. They would round out a very nice WR group.
Chosen ahead of Shepard didn't get the praise Shepard did on the networks. Can Shepard be better than those guys?
Sy says -
"Four year senior and three year starter. Has elite slot receiver potential. Shepard has all the movement ability to run himself open underneath but also the strength and toughness to factor in traffic. He has made plenty of receptions in traffic and shows no hesitation doing so. He has very good concentration and ball skills. Shepard will surprise defenses with his ability to run deep routes and make catches on the vertical move. His work ethic is second to none and the attention to detail is what makes receivers get to the next level in terms of production and consistency. Shepard may be limited to slot duty in the NFL, but its a role that almost every team is using more and more each year. He has a bright future.
*Although the long term upside of Shepard may not be as high as some of these guys, I think he is the safest bet among all the WRs to at least be a solid contributor. He has the ideal physical ability and mental approach for the vital slot presence. But when you watch him you notice he can do more than run quick routes over the middle. This kid competes as hard as anyone in the entire class. If NYG has any ounce of doubt about Cruz coming back all the way, Shepard needs to be strongly considered if he is there in round 2, which I highly doubt is the case"
And it's not like it was that horrible last year. Once they ditched the stupid 4 headed RB by committee, the run game was decent. Get over not taking an OLmen in the first 2 freaking rounds!
he is 1 inch shorter than beckham..his arms are about 2 inches shorter , but his hands are very nearly the same size. His vertical was 41, nearly 3 inches higher than ODB. He is not being projected to be an X type WR like beckham though, so giving up a little size, he'll be releasing off the los more than OBJ.
If Cruz can contribute, and essentially be the Third wr, the Giants could have one of the best passing offenses in the league. Keep in mind, Donnell is coming back, from a neck injury. Will Tye is in year two in the offense. Shane Vereen is in his second year with Eli. By the way Ten Ton Hammer is right, the line that everyone thinks sucks, was part of the 10 ranked offense in the league.
RE: Ross says that Shepard was the #1 recevier in the whole draft
Bitching about his height. Let me ask you this, aside from Plax what WR has Eli been good with that was considered "tall"? Randle? Nope. Barden? Hell no.
Get this kid the ball in space and scary things will happen. His height won't matter if he's wide open.
secondaries are going to have a hard time dealing with the explosiveness both on the outside and in the slot with him and OBJ on the field at same time.
Also very impressed with Shepard's drive to get into the end zone when down in close. He can go up and get a jump ball as well as make a move to create separation. Tough to cover.
I'm fairly certain that several of our draft picks never met with
the team and were rather surprised being picked by us. I know for certain I've read that sentiment from other draft picks we've made, but I don't recall with specificity which players. But definitely high draft picks.

I would sign Boldin in a heartbeat, he would be an asset to the passing game in that the can get open and catch anything thrown his way...
I read this pick as the Giants having their doubts about Cruz
ever coming back to form. If Cruz doesn't come back, Shepard plays the slot, and the Giants need to find another wideout. No one on their current roster has shown much. Anthony Dable is an unknown quantity. He has terrific size and in the German league he reminds you of Plaxico Burress, but his opposition is shorter and slower. Well said Joey!

Yea, f you Norman!
Get one more decent target, and this could be fun!
OBJ, Shepard and Dable? ;-)

Arguably the best or at least second best CB and WR in the draft?
YES
it certainly seems that way. I'm really pleased

The NYG still have money (and two mid round picks). There are likely to be some value OL vets avail between now and the last roster cutdowns.

Don't know about that. I just think SS will do more with Randles old targets and Eli's stats will actually go up !
OG: Westerman or Dahl. FS: Thompson or Simmons
Sorry. More at OT: Clark, Coleman or Hawkins.
Could be a huge impact player in year 1.
He will get it done.
In all my years watching Giants, he may be the first guy I said "he would look good in blue someday" and it came true.
Exactly what I was thinking!

Sterling Shepard says his interaction with the #Giants were limited. Filled out a questionaire. That's about it.
I heard the Rutgers coach confirm they only had a single interview with Eli as well. Strange.
Bullshit....no
Shepard looks very shifty on tape, with good precision on his routes.
Get this kid the ball in space and scary things will happen. His height won't matter if he's wide open.
He's going to be very very good.
Great pick. The kind where I suspect teams will all admit that they knew he was good but couldn't draft him earlier because 5'10" and not 4.3.

Obviously a coincidence, but.... just odd.
