was a first round talent, explosive hopeful ST contributor, and sounds like a tirelessly hard worker. Added another weapon to an already explosive offense. Now adding a physical vet like Boldin makes sense to balance things out.
hes probably good but I just don't agree that they accomplished that. Although, we at least don't have to count on Cruz and him not contributing was always the most likely outcome. So this is an overall positive if insufficient.
*Although the long term upside of Shepard may not be as high as some of these guys, I think he is the safest bet among all the WRs to at least be a solid contributor. He has the ideal physical ability and mental approach for the vital slot presence. But when you watch him you notice he can do more than run quick routes over the middle. This kid competes as hard as anyone in the entire class. If NYG has any ounce of doubt about Cruz coming back all the way, Shepard needs to be strongly considered if he is there in round 2, which I highly doubt is the case.
Fantastic WR who can play both slot and outside. Outstanding routes. EXTREMELY high character guy also. Father played WR for the Washington Franchise and the Cowboys.
Having seen him in college he literally has EVERYTHING you want in a slot receiver
Amazing hands, drops almost nothing
Incredibly shifty, runs all the routes exceptionally well
Cruz-type body control before Vic got hurt
Exceptional football intelligence, knows where the holes are in the zone
Will contribute right away. Unlike Round 1, the organization kept the secret on this one and wanted him all the way
He could be the next Welker/Cruz type receiver in this league
is as likely to succeed as any player I have seen in years. He has fantastic, ankle breaking quickness, is an excellent route runner, and has tremendous, nearly 10 hands. He also did twenty reps on the bench at the combine. He is the ultimate slot receiver. He has similarities to Tyler Lockett, who the Giants wanted to draft in the third round last year.
The production of the draft on ESPN is atrocious, they skip half of the picks. As soon as the Giants where about to make the pick they cut to a commercial and have since ignored it altogether.
I think everyone agrees that WR is a huge need, and by almost universal accounts, we got a really good one. The draft isn't over, we can get an OL next.
I doubt it. Cruz seems like the epitome of a team guy, the sort who will help Shepard as much as possible.
I like this draft a lot now. Yeah fine, I wanted Jack, and I'm fairly certain that if we *do* address the LB position it'll be in the form of some obligatory 4th-round reach, but at least the guys we got are exciting.
Cruz and OBJ on the outside with Shepard in the slot? We are going to have to roll that way some of the time to have our best 3 out there. Cruz might be brought along slowly we'll see.
With this pick, my own fav for round two. What to do about RT or RG? Or LB or FS? Hell, you can only do so much in the draft. (Sorry-- putting this in late.)
RE: Shepard is a slot receiver--Reese just said so
they showed on NFLN highlight package of Shepard was awesome. Wonder how the 3 wide package looks with OBJ, Shepard and Cruz, if Cruz stays healthy. Would like to see Davis in three wides if his talent level jumps in year two.
Ben McAdoo says he can envision Beckham, Cruz and Shepard
Absolutely. There's no reason why you can't have two slot receivers at the same time and there's no reason why either of those guys can't run sideline routes.
Misconceived, They are not going to pick a oline unless it's a BPA. If a better rated fs or olb are there, they are going to be the pick. They like Hart alot, even at RT.
The best slot receiver in the draft. He's definitely a "Y"; Cruz will be the "X" and Odell will be the"Y".
Comparisons of Shepard align with a combo Julian Edelman and Victor Cruz. Shepard has really quick feet, change directions on a dime, can leap into orbit (41"), and has sure hands.
Where yesterday I thought Apple was taken a little higher than he should have been, today we got a WR who I thought very likely may have gone in round 1. This is a solid pick and yesterday's wasn't bad either.
does anyone believe that? If so, I am amazed to get him here.
I could believe it. Colemans route running was a concern and Treadwell just isn't dynamic. After that there's pros and cons to every other player as well.
RE: Ross says that Shepard was the #1 recevier in the whole draft
forcing teams to bring guys up closer to the line. Then blasting them for deep hits with OBJ on double moves. Eli's stats will improve even more this season.
and with Harris as the #4WR, that's a pretty damn good WR corp.
My take is this pick ADDS to the value of Cruz.
Optimistically we all hope Victor comes back healthy and is able to contribute, but realistically we also know he won't be the Victor of a few years ago.
In a 3 WR set with OBJ and Shepard, Cruz should be able to clean up. Clearly he won't draw the opposition's best CB.
This may be a unique combination, and Eli's dream; 3 great route runners, with the football smarts to be in the right place at the right time, all with decent hands, paired with an intellectual QB. It's like Peyton with 3 Marvin Harrisons. (OK I exaggerate but you get the point.)
for a year... watch out. WR goes from a question mark (aside from Beckham) to a major strength instantly.
The Giants aren't signing Boldin
He seems like the type of crusty old vet they would sign short term. Can't rely on a rookie to perform like a starter for a full year.
I know what Boldin's said about signing with a contender, but the potential fire power of this offense if he comes on board, could be both exciting to him as well as being enough to overcome some deficiencies on the D to make a run for the prize.
Plus there's got to be SOME satisfaction to mentoring such a talented WR corps.
This is a great pick. We are going to love this guy. The second coming of Steve Smith but with more talent. Outside or inside, long or short, before or after the catch, he can get it done. More talented players for the talent positions. 2 for 2.
I doubt it. Cruz seems like the epitome of a team guy, the sort who will help Shepard as much as possible.
I didn't say Victor was a DICK or unprofessional. I do think Shep is at his best in the slot and I seriously doubt Victor can play on the outside anymore. The Giants would've been foolish to put all of their eggs (or even a few) in Victor's basket. But he has to be feeling a bit sick now.
and with Harris as the #4WR, that's a pretty damn good WR corp.

Don't forget Dable and Davis....they're both bigger receivers with good hands too. They would round out a very nice WR group.
Chosen ahead of Shepard didn't get the praise Shepard did on the networks. Can Shepard be better than those guys?
Sy says -
"Four year senior and three year starter. Has elite slot receiver potential. Shepard has all the movement ability to run himself open underneath but also the strength and toughness to factor in traffic. He has made plenty of receptions in traffic and shows no hesitation doing so. He has very good concentration and ball skills. Shepard will surprise defenses with his ability to run deep routes and make catches on the vertical move. And it's not like it was that horrible last year. Once they ditched the stupid 4 headed RB by committee, the run game was decent. Get over not taking an OLmen in the first 2 freaking rounds!
he is 1 inch shorter than beckham..his arms are about 2 inches shorter , but his hands are very nearly the same size. His vertical was 41, nearly 3 inches higher than ODB. He is not being projected to be an X type WR like beckham though, so giving up a little size, he'll be releasing off the los more than OBJ.
If Cruz can contribute, and essentially be the Third wr, the Giants could have one of the best passing offenses in the league. Keep in mind, Donnell is coming back, from a neck injury. Will Tye is in year two in the offense. Shane Vereen is in his second year with Eli. By the way Ten Ton Hammer is right, the line that everyone thinks sucks, was part of the 10 ranked offense in the league.
RE: Ross says that Shepard was the #1 recevier in the whole draft
Bitching about his height. Let me ask you this, aside from Plax what WR has Eli been good with that was considered "tall"? Randle? Nope. Barden? Hell no.
Get this kid the ball in space and scary things will happen. His height won't matter if he's wide open.
secondaries are going to have a hard time dealing with the explosiveness both on the outside and in the slot with him and OBJ on the field at same time.
Also very impressed with Shepard's drive to get into the end zone when down in close. He can go up and get a jump ball as well as make a move to create separation. Tough to cover.
I'm fairly certain that several of our draft picks never met with
the team and were rather surprised being picked by us. I know for certain I've read that sentiment from other draft picks we've made, but I don't recall with specificity which players. But definitely high draft picks.
for a year... watch out. WR goes from a question mark (aside from Beckham) to a major strength instantly.

I read this pick as the Giants having their doubts about Cruz
ever coming back to form. If Cruz doesn't come back, Shepard plays the slot, and the Giants need to find another wideout. No one on their current roster has shown much. Anthony Dable is an unknown quantity. He has terrific size and in the German league he reminds you of Plaxico Burress, but his opposition is shorter and slower. Anthony Dable highlights - ( New Window )
I can live with that.
Haha, definitely a mistake...
Twitter is a minute ahead of TV
Shepard is great value and fit
Very similar to Tyler Lockett and Randall Cobb
The #Giants pick #Oklahoma WR Sterling Shepard at No. 40. I had more OCs praise him, unsolicited, as a future pro than any other player.
Why?
Amazing hands, drops almost nothing
Incredibly shifty, runs all the routes exceptionally well
Cruz-type body control before Vic got hurt
Exceptional football intelligence, knows where the holes are in the zone
Will contribute right away. Unlike Round 1, the organization kept the secret on this one and wanted him all the way

Pretty damn good might be a stretch right now, but the ceiling and floor both went up.

Love the Shephard pick by Giants. One of my favorite players left after Round 1.
WR target off the board. Giants snag Sterling Shepard. One of the most productive WRs in football last year.
Awesome pick by the #Giants by picking Sterling Shepard. He is such a consistent route runner who will prosper in the Giants system.
He is more than a possession receiver.
Shepard grade: A. Love this player. He is more than just a solid receiver. I think he can be like Randall Cobb.

Jerry Reese on WR Sterling Shepard: "Just everything you want in a slot wide receiver. ... He's NFL-ready right now."
NFL ready? He's starting to sound like me.
Thank you Jerry
Giants got caught flat-footed in Round 1, no doubt. But Reese isn't lying about Round 2. They loved this WR from the start.
Me, I like defense, but Eli has to have at least two targets and Cruz is a question mark.
Well done Giants.
Hey B, if Cruz goes outside, do you think it takes some pressure off his knee? Not as much torque as a slot receiver? Shepard Definitely a slot guy.

Indeed they do, slot receiver in RD. 2, okay.
I guess Spriggs would not have been value at #40?

Will you ever make an informed post?
His height doesn't matter. He's a small player, that plays bigger than his height. He had the intangibles.
