But they also said he has great ball skills and a nose for the ball. Sounds like a real ball-hawking FS (which we need), but needs to be more physical. He's big too. I like it for a 3rd rounder.
Yeah, definitely a plus. Has to learn how to tackle, though.
have to keep drafting safeties because Reese cant find one. Taylor, Berhe, Thompson. Same story with the OL. Hard to believe he was the best guy on the board. Billings or Bullard seem like better picks.
Thompson looks good on tape against lower competition....not sure he is a guy that brings a higher level of play over what they already have. It's a logjam of mediocrity at FS.
Has ball skills and can wear a few hats. Not a bad pick. But he lacks some tools.
i dont disagree, but there's a reason we're picking top 10 for the 2nd straight year. we weren't a good team, there are a ton of needs...i think we've been addressing them one by one thus far.
as they still have Jackson, Thompson and Behre on the roster and are guys that they really haven't seen play badly. Unless you call them injury prone, and I really wouldn't considering the type of injuries, they already have new guys on the roster for that spot. odd.
Is the primary tackler on most plays, we have bigger problems.
This guy is a center fielder. We have corners now so he can sit back and look at routes looking to jump. Kinda curious what they saw in him over Simmons.
I think he's a nice centerfielder yet drafted for need
They did not kill him they said due to his speed sometimes he takes poor angles on the tackles. This they said can be cleaned up with proper coaching which they believe he will get at the next level. They also said the kid can make plays as evidenced by his 19 Int's
Darian is a smart, knows where hes supposed to be and does what hes supposed to do Safety. He has solid athletic talent and has no problems coming up to help out against the run. He has just enough cover skills and excellent size to cover bigger slot receivers and the change of direction skills to make life not very easy for those small slot receivers. Darian has the hands to make the interception and the run back skills that make you think he might be able to play on the other side of the ball as a third down running back, but I digress. Darian waits for a quarterback to make a mistake and then he makes them pay intercepting passes that most safeties would find hard to catch. In fact, most safeties are not even thinking about intercepting the ball, but Darian has the instincts and understands where his defensive pressure is going to come from against a quarterback and anticipates the mistake happening before it happens. He is smart because he understands more than just his position.
that guesses a lot and doesn't tackle. They must have had some info. Liked Apple, loved Sheppard, this one... is kinda meh for me. I'm going to have to look up some cutups on him.
what 3rd rounder is perfect? We needed a ball hawk and hopefully he fits the bill. 19 picks suggests he has a nose for the ball which is perfectly fine with me.

I don't think there is a pick in the world that you would disagree with though, to be fair..
Riverboat gambler on the backend. Not elite physical tools in terms of speed and agility. Oddly I like his ability to sift and hit near the LoS better than his projection as a ballhawking centerfield type S in the NFL. Wish him and us well with this pick...we'll need it.
New York Giants: Darian Thompson, S, Boise State A- Grade
Darian Thompson could've easily been chosen in the middle of the second round, so this is great value. Thompson also fills a need, as New York had to obtain help next to Landon Collins. Thompson has tackling concerns, but he's a play-maker who will create turnovers for the Giants.

Was the guy I thought they should grab, this is a pick that I guess I don't like much, why not Simmons? I understood Apple over Hargeaves, I loved Shepherd, this I can't get behind and Reese never hits on this type of pick. Typical Reese bullshit.
Is the primary tackler on most plays, we have bigger problems.
This guy is a center fielder. We have corners now so he can sit back and look at routes looking to jump. Kinda curious what they saw in him over Simmons.
That's what I thought as well. The SS should be the pure tackler and the FS the hands, finesse guy that plays the ball. If your FS is playing the receiver that means you have trouble at corner.
as they still have Jackson, Thompson and Behre on the roster and are guys that they really haven't seen play badly. Unless you call them injury prone, and I really wouldn't considering the type of injuries, they already have new guys on the roster for that spot. odd.
Is Berhe really a free/cover safety? He seems like more of a hitter than anything.
Jackson and Thompson are late round players.Jackson a converted corner who was not really a big time talent in college.
Said he is a ball hawk and a heavy hitter but takes poor angles and as a safety needs to tackle better. If they can teach him how to take angles better this should allow Collins to play in box and play the run which is more his game because his coverage skills weren't great last year.
And honestly if this means we won't see Unga covering the top TE's in the league, I will take it.

I don't know about that, Sy. He had a very nice Senior Bowl week and he played very well against Virginia (as Greg may attest to) and Washington.

I'm indifferent, don't know the player. I keep seeing people wish we picked this or that player and I just sit back and laugh. Unless we are taking a punter or someone with baggage I really don't have a strong opinion after the first couple rounds when I don't know the players much.
Here's a full game against UVA - not a powerhouse but still ACC
looks pretty good and really seems to know how to go up for the ball.
McGinn's review called him the smartest safety in the draft with great ball skills and good coverage skills in both man/zone. Mayock echoed most of that. Sounds like he's a willing tackler but took bad angles that led to big plays also. It sounds like his ball skills are among the best in the draft, I like that roll of the dice. We certainly don't have anyone proven at FS. Darian Thompson vs. UVA - ( New Window )

Shut up. You don't know a damn thing about this player
Has ball skills and can wear a few hats. Not a bad pick. But he lacks some tools.
can't draft 6 guys with 1 pick...
This guy is a center fielder. We have corners now so he can sit back and look at routes looking to jump. Kinda curious what they saw in him over Simmons.
You can tell when Mayock likes a player and doesn't by the tone of his voice, haha.

So drafting a guy makes the secondary solid for several years regardless of whether he is any good?

He ran in the 4.5s in his Pro Day. He's not slow.
4.61 there.
4.53 and 4.55 is what I saw based on the reports. Far from slow

It's like you read my mind, dude. That's exactly what my point was.

Guessing that's a misprint.
Try 4.69 40, which is not great for a safety that has to keep up and react to quicker receivers.
Be nice to have a ball hawk, though. Not like he could be much worse than the guys they played back there last year.
Bennet Jackson as a utility DB sounds nice to me. Can play safety or corner. 3 safety sets. I like Jackson. Assuming he stays healthy.
The #Giants select at No. 71, #BoiseSt S Darian Thompson. An old-school hitter, this is a mentality pick. Physical.
Seems like everyone else is saying hes a center fielder type, not a SS
Jerry Reese says Darian Thompson is a free safety. "Center fielder, makes the calls, solid tackler."
I don't think there is a pick in the world that you would disagree with though, to be fair..

Oh for fuck's sake. How do you guys even get out of bed in the morning. It's all doom and gloom.
Jerry Reese says Darian Thompson is a free safety. A "centerfielder". A "ball-hawk safety."

Collins is still new
Thompson rookie
Apple rookie
Jenkins New
He's not going to declare a third rounder the starter 10 minutes after he was drafted.

There was certainly room to bring in more talent.
