but disappointed there. I'm never sure how much stock to put into combines. Same thing happened to Collins last year. Was rated #1 safety then combines and then he fell.
Jerry Reese says Darian Thompson is a free safety. "Center fielder, makes the calls, solid tackler."
So JR doesn't even know the scoop on this dude is that he can't tackle? LOL!
Hopefully this will be JR's LAST draft! So far he's 1 for 3 in this one.
I thought they said he's a good tackler. He's missed some tackles as the last defender and that was due to a bad angle not bad tackling technique.
So it's getting into position to make a tackle that he needs to work on.
He's going to need to clean that up quick because his CBs are BIG risk takers. Hell I think Apple will be the only CB that plays his man vs ball.
If you are into takeaways this secondary has a bunch of guys looking to get the interception and return. LOL Apple and Collins will be racking up the tackles though.
we had pretty much the worst defense in NFL history last year right? And the offense was 8th in the league? We can get depth, possibly a starting G or RT down the road with these next few picks. We need fucking defensive playmakers.
M.S. : 4/10/2016 11:28 am
...two players I like in each round within the context of our current team, and who I "think" may be available in each round based on several Mock Drafts floating around out there.
This isn't a Mock Draft, but just something I've put together so I can pontificate on something hypothetical, speculative and probably has little -- if anything -- to do with the way the Draft will actually unfold.
One huge bias I have right from the get-go, which many on BBI have a different viewpoint ... out of all the needs the Giants have, I believe Wide Receiver is trailing the pack... by far.
Round One:
Ronnie Stanley (Offensive Tackle; Notre Dame)
May not be there, but he's the book move IMO because his selection represents two positions: Stanley to LT and Flowers to RT.
Sheldon Rankins (Defensive Tackle; Louisville)
May have a better chance of being there at 10 than Stanley. Best DT in this Draft who plays in the backfield and messes up offensive line play in a big way. When he is wreaking havoc, we don't have to worry as much about a bad-to-mediocre LB unit. He also represents cost-containment when Hankins moves on. Put him next to "Snacks" and release the hounds.
Round Two:
Darian Thompson (Free Safety; Boise State)
The best free safety in the Draft at a position of desperate need for the Giants. He has got ball reaction instincts far superior to anything at Safety on our current roster. I've read here about Landon Collins being a full time Free Safety. How can that be with a guy who can't track the ball over his head. I want Collins at strong safety closer to the LOS. Why Cooper Taylor's name keeps being mentioned is beyond my comprehension... an injury-plagued, low-level talent is not the way to go!
Kendall Fuller (Cornerback; Va Tech)
There is zero depth behind the very strong starting duo of DRC and Janoris Jenkins. Kendall Fuller will soon be a quality starting CB in the NFL and will automatically become our first guy off the bench in the slot. He is the complete package and -- despite his size -- is a very willing tackler. IMO, his athleticism alone makes him a great pick here... his production only solidifies that.
Round Three
Deion Jones (OLB; LSU)
You don't put this guy over a TE... play him in space and watch him wreak havoc all over the field. Was very surprised to read his weight is below 230! Jones has got a huge lower power-train, so I think he can carry a lot more weight. He flies into lanes and is a heat-seeking missile. Plays on Specials from Day One and can replace JT Thomas in Year Two (maybe Year One.)
Christian Westerman (OG or C; Arizona State)
I would pick him in the third round even if we go Ronnie Stanley in the first. And if it's Sheldon Rankins in the first, than I would definitely go with this guy over Deion Jones. We have no offensive line depth and this guy can eventually start in his first year at right guard. Westerman is an accomplished run blocker and can get to the second level with a lot of attitude. Saw him play... he is strong and he is mean.
Round Four
Blake Martinez (MLB; Stanford)
I think this guy is everything you want in the middle. He's sees the play... he attacks the play. He just goes when the ball is snapped and he goes to the right place. He tackles and he covers which is quite a novelty for our team. Probably will not be selected because I think we are OK with Brinkley and Robinson in the middle. But I still think the world of Martinez and I want him on the team!
Alex Collins (RB; Arkansas)
Love this very thick-set running back. You look at this guy and you wouldn't think he could both charge into the LOS and shift directions in a small place at the same time. But he can! He also has tremendous balance and is an all-around tough guy. We can drop Andre Williams the moment Alex Collins is drafted.
So... based on the above, here are two scenarios with the one constant being Free Safety in Round Two:
Scenario One:
Round One: Ronnie Stanley; OT
Round Two: Darian Thompson: FS
Round Three: Deion Jones: OLB
Round Four: Alex Collins RB
Said his 'tackling issue' is fixable.
We needed a Centerfield error not a LB type tackler.
Our draft has been a steady B+
End of day, is the team better? YES
Starting Nickle, eventually a starting CB.
Wr2 is set. We could have 3 of the most explosive WRS in the NFL. If Cruz comes back, which looks likely, we have O'Dell and Sterling who can score anytime they touch the ball. He is great at possession too. Add a healthy Cruz and Harris as our4th and Eli is set.
Darian Thompson was one of the top ball hawking FSN in this draft. I yell out yes, come on here to who is this guy?
Doom and gloom. NFL network said he took bad angles tackling which can be fixed easily. We need a ballhawk (he had 19 picks), not a SS, we have tough tackler in Collins
Chill out guys we still have picks tomorrow
June 1st cuts
We will have someone better then Newhouse at RT. Anthony Davis is a dream.
But there will be plenty of talent left to draft. O'Hara went un drafted. Plenty of good players go in the 4th 5th yth and 7th.
Look at Willie Colon yth Rd played over 12 years at OL. Josh Norman in the 5th and so on.
Did the Giants get better, definitely yes, getting Shepard with ODell was beautiful. Apple is today's CB. Long and lanky that plays hard in your face press. Can ease into lineup startingNguyen at Nicole this year.
A ballhawk S.
Another electric WR.
Some just like popular names?
Has 1,1 mock been even close ? Nope
Mykelle T, geremy Davis all draft picks to name a few. Recent draft picks. And yet we take Shepard and this guy who might be better but almost seems like ok we missed on those guys, let's try with these now. Rinse repeat.
I like what I see as for potential but the guys mentioned above had potential. I mean where does geremy Davis fit in here? I don't see room, so that's a wasted pick last season. Interesting what Reese and company do.
For all the critics .... Ran a 4.53 at his pro day
I was surprised this is just now being brought up. He was sick at the combine and yet still worked out and still ran. He is extremely tough... had a great senior bowl week and had 5 tackles with 2 PD in the game. Ran a 4.53 at pro day... probably a 4.61-4.63 guy which is plenty fast. 19 picks is a lot and the missed tackles they say is because he was trying to do to much on a Defense that was lacking talent

Lots of wasted picks in recent years. You summed it up pretty well.
A misleading stat directly attributable to how fast the ball comes out and Eli's pocket sense. Doesn't give an accurate picture of the consistent pressure and harassment Eli dealt with.

"Safety Darian Thompson: Thompson (6-2, 213) was suffering from an illness at the combine and came back to have a good pro day. He ran a 4.6-second 40 (4.69 at the combine) and had 13 lifts. I was told he tracked and caught the ball well in position drills."
STRENGTHS: Tall, filled-out frame, working hard to max out his build. Always on the hunt with consistently fast play speed, covering a lot of ground. Anticipates well with the play in front of him, floating and undercutting routes to make plays on the ball. Accurately reads the eyes of quarterbacks to bait throws - film junkie and picks up on tendencies.
Aggressive downhill with a physical mind-set, taking on contact. Outstanding ball-skills and ball awareness, locating with the focus to finish interceptions. Acrobatic skills to make diving catches look routine. Competitive intangibles desired for the next level with unforced leadership ("a guy you want to be around all the time," according to a teammate). Durable four-year starter.
WEAKNESSES: Tight lower body and upright transition, struggling to flip his hips and stay in phase downfield. Shorter arms and overaggressive angles leads to missed tackles in run support. Needs to better control his momentum to break down on the move. Inconsistent jam technique.
Struggles to recover after false steps with stiff change of direction skills and ordinary catch-up speed. Undisciplined vision and his eyes pay rent in the backfield, allowing pass-catchers to gain a step. Marginal instincts with his back to the ball.
COMPARES TO: Bacarri Rambo, Buffalo Bills - Although false steps and aggressive reads will lead to big plays for the offense, safeties like Rambo and Thompson have the playmaking skills to post their fair share of big plays as well.
IN OUR VIEW: Thompson has the anticipation and ball-skills to read quarterbacks and make plays on the ball, but he also guesses too much and lacks the same cover skills once asked to turn and run. His inconsistencies make it tough to trust him as the last line of defense, but his playmaking instincts and toughness will interest NFL coaches as a downhill safety.
Is right. I'd be surprised if they don't pull off a trade for Davis. Fits to a t. Jersey guy, contract not huge, only 26.good RT. Won't cost a ton. Maybe tomorrow or after draft.
Can bitch about getting burned over the top & not covering TEs. Then bitch about a guy who has forced 21 career turnovers, 15 TFL & 15 pass deflections.

For fucks sake. We used 6th and 7th round picks on these guys.
Sterling Shepard was a great pick Imo.
Him and Odell will be so explosive it will allow Cruz and Tye and Verden kill it underneath.
When Geramy Davis warrants a starting role he will get one. He was a 6th rd'error. Chill lolol
Wtf you can't possibly follow the draft other then mocks.
Shepard was an A pick
Darian Thompson is much better then Mykelle , Jesus watch some film before talking like you know
Beckham said the combine is over rated.
Elaborate.

But this kid looks solid. Lack of speed is compensated for by his ballhawking skills.
It is not the type of pick that gets you excited but it could be a good value pick if this kid comes in and starts for 3-4 years.
I completely agree. Trade whatever it takes because beef up the right side oline and our offense will be uneatable!

There is no concern with his speed! He ran in the 4.5s in his pro day. He ran a 4.69 at the Combine when he had food poisoning.
As long as we don't feed him spoiled food, he'll be fine.
Interesting that his slow time at the combine could be due to illness.
