Not necessarily top guy on their board, cluster of guys they debated, so they reached for a need.
When the board doesn't stack up with the needs they start checking off mediocrity.
Hate to kill the guy and hope he turns out to be a good player for us, but we seem to always be going down that road at this point in JRs drafts. Tthen we get to watch those players come and go and the needs keep growing.

I think you are reading too much into the answer. The Giants do not have a strict 1-253 board. Players are grouped into rows and the Giants like to take someone in their highest remaining row. However, sometimes when they pick there are multiple players remaining in the highest row. If they cannot work out an acceptable trade they tend in middle rounds to say "which guy in this group in the highest row fills the biggest need."
You very well could be right. But this FO needs to prove it then. Their track record here in the draft sucks. Im not giving them any benefit of the doubt. They don't deserve it.
Then the row before probably just closed out and you missed out.
You don't have to just sit there and be a victim of who falls to you. You can move up to get your guy or move back to get more picks and get better value.
If you are trying to match need with value, as they say, you can't always just sit there and take whatever comes to you. Other teams menuve.the draft and do it well. We don't.

you might be right about how the board broke and true about getter my your guy or moving back. That said I think Reese got his guy. From the limited film I've seen -- I really like this guy. He had the film presence of ogletree/ shazier as LBs or Hill as a safety -- I'm talking about flash on film not position equivalence.
fits well with the DL free agents and the types of corners we are utilizing and the prospect of aggressive DL play matched with close cover man corner play ..tough/large 'up' safety play...the missing piece was a ball hawk free or deep safety, and now we have one.
how are you bitter? None of these picks have stepped on the field yet. Thompson could be the next Ed Reed or a bust - nobody knows.
Very true, and I hope so. As I said, my comments were directed at FO, not the player. I frequently give them the benefit of the doubt, more so than many others, but not here. Not at this point.
Their track record doesn't give confidence, is my answer.
I like this draft so far, nevermind round 1 not being my
thing visa-vis specific moves, what I like is that so far:
..what they are doing is integrated with what they did last year as well as with what they did in free agency, in addition as with team playing style concepts and 'spot opportunities' in a rational whole draft,
also its been a rational value play within the draft so far, round / positional wise.
Apple. man cover type, fits scheme and aggressive DL play. upside type, now would be the time to integrate an upside type, while we still have 2 veteran corner starters.
Sheppard, can play slot, get open, get first downs, look for him and Odell to set up a counter punch thing. Perfect and a BBI favorite move here. Complimentary to Odell.
Darian T. Ball hawk and all around play making safety to compliment 3 man cover corners and take advantage of aggressive DL attack.

Even though your negativity may be disturbing here, you make a point that should be considered- how many safeties have we drafted, to fill a need, have not panned out? Is this another one of them? That is a valid question to ask in my opinion. Having said that, I'm very ecstatic about this pick.

very nicely done so far.
Not true. I am certain Thompson will not be the next Ed Reed. And he had a torn Achilles. This certainly won't help his speed and quickness.

Mykkele Thompson had a torn Achilles. This thread is about Darian Thompson.
