1. Too many needs to take any character risks. There is plenty of talent in the 1st Rd. No need to risk it.
2. They may have a "plan B" that we are not aware of (Anthony Davis or an emerging Bobby Hart)
the GM is well aware that his job is on the line now. No way was he going to risk that on the #10 pick with all the bagged this guy has. Not only the pot smoking, but this circle of people he's involved in, the craziness with the step father. The Giants needed a guy who can step in and contribute at a high level, with no distractions.
Essentially, the Giants got Lawrence Phillips'ed again. All they needed was for Tunsil to go in the top 9 and they would have gotten Conklin. Years ago it was Ogden who they missed out on. Hopefully Apple will turn out better than Cedric Jones did.
I am sure he has a pipeline into the program that few have. Not that Eli makes the calls on draft picks but I am sure the Giants were aware of all his problems before passing on him.

Exactly! You state it perfectly... we "got Lawrence Phillips'ed again..."

Yup - just needed Smith or Smith to be healthy and Tunsil to behave. Any of the three. Maybe even had the option to trade back. The Giants got a nice player but, ya know.
There was never a peep about this guy's character until his step dad fucked him over. He was the best player in the draft and the Giants absolutely should have taken him, but I knew there was zero percent chance of that happening, so again, the Giants squeaky clean standards once again frustrate me. They probably avoid as many good players(that don't end up getting in trouble) as they do problems with their high character bar. Gotta be exceptions to rules and this was absolutely one time to make an exception. I would bet anyone Tunsil is incident free his entire NFL career and will man the LT spot for the Dolphins for a long time and he will be one of the best out there.
Will Hill was a lesson, but Damontre Moore was more of a mistake because of his lack of talent than it was for his character. And him getting kicked off the team because he got into a fight with the untouchable Cullen Jenkins, who was being a selfish asshole, reflected the sorry state of the Giants more than Moore as a bad character guy.
Drafts ago, Reese and Co. Made a decision to no longer take risky players and draft high character guys. This is the third year they have done it. I knew there was no way they take Tunsil.
Its not new, it doesnt have to do with his job being on the line. This has been an important factor in their decision making for three drafts now and they are going to see this strategy through.

Ogden? Seriously? He got drafted ahead of the Giants. When will you clowns realize this team does not draft for need and takes the BPA? They say it all the time. They take character into question which is why Tunsel was not the BPA. There will be player released up front for the second wave of free agency.
Sick and tired of people here crying because their perceived needs are not filled. A strong CB was a huge need. So was a WR. Both accomplished and there are still three rounds left.
Paul Schwartz posted a story almost 24 hours before the draft - to stay away from Tunsil -- that story was spoon fed
Apparently the 2 year old video was being shopped around. I suspect the existence of a video is what caused Schwartz's story. Deadspin reported they received an email on 4/12. They decided not to buy.

Yep... the Giants absolutely, positively never, never, never select a player based on NEED. It's BPA Rounds 1 through 7... every time, all the time.

The Schwartz story did not discuss the video at all Stay Away Giants - ( New Window )
Your right. Forgot the article spoke only about Tunsil's play. But the point of the Daily News article I linked remains the same. Stepfather files suit 2 days prior. Video is posted on twitter just as draft is to commence. Not mentioned in this story, Miami GM was aware of video's existence.
The Giants stick to their board. The investigate thoroughly, line their board and go with it.
The info on Tunsil was last minute. Nobody had time to vet it. The risk was too high @ 10 so they took him off their board and went with next man up.
Another thought....
Maybe The Giants didn't have Tunsil high on their board?
It's quite possible that he may have been rated lower on their board than Apple?
The truth is we don't know how high he was rated on their big board. Sy'56 has Tunsil rated in the same tier group as Apple. With the way he's been on the money not just with picks but with The Giants way of thinking...it's quite possible we would, have never taken Tunsil over Apple regardless of the situation.

I just question taking a 3rd CB when so many other units (OL, WR, S, LB) do not even have enough reliable starters to field a team.

sb - all you have to know is that when DRC was off the field last year -- the Giants suffered big time. You have to have a 3 CBs in today's NFL
