Farrar/Burke SI: How did your team do in the '16 draft?

"New York Giants: A

First pick: Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State (No. 10)

Other notable picks: Sterling Shepard, WR, Oklahoma (40); Darian Thompson, S, Boise State (71); Paul Perkins, RB, UCLA (149)

Any year Jerry Reese doesn't reach for an offensive lineman can be considered a good one, and the first-round selection of Ohio State cornerback Eli Apple is a nice move. Apple is a hyper-aggressive pass defender with a lot of athletic upside, not unlike new Giant Janoris Jenkins. The real player of note, though, could be second-round receiver Sterling Shepard. A highly productive target in college, Shepard projects very well to the slot in the NFL, and should provide some coverage relief for Odell Beckham, Jr. Boise State safety Darian Thompson is an excellent deep-coverage player who should help Big Blue's defensive backfield right away, and Reese committed larceny by taking UCLA's Paul Perkins in the fifth round. Perkins isn't seen as an every-down back due to his size, but the tape shows a player comparable to LeSean McCoy with a bit more power. After a prodigious spending spree in free agency, the Giants came back with one heck of a draft.& #8203; —DF"

Rang CBS Sports: NFC East Draft Grades

"The Giants' selection of Ohio State's Eli Apple was one of the big surprises of the first round, but some scouts believe he will ultimately prove the best corner of this draft. Given the big investments made along the defensive line in free agency, the decision to boost that side of that the ball even further made sense in the second round when the club nabbed future plug-and-play slot receiver Sterling Shepard, whose quickness, speed and toughness remind scouts of Seahawks second year wideout and return extraordinaire Tyler Lockett, a Pro Bowler as a rookie.
Safety Darian Thompson has the hands and range to be a classic center fielder in the NFL, boasting an NCAA best 19 interceptions over his career, but he was prone to missed tackles at Boise State, the opposite of fourth-round run-stuffing linebacker B.J. Goodson. Running back Paul Perkins starred at UCLA but questions about whether his production was inflated by the Bruins' spread attack pushed him down the board. He is a slasher with the agility, speed and hands to help New York's offense, however.

Grade: C"

"New York Giants, B
1 (10) Eli Apple, CB, Ohio State
2 (40) Sterling Shepard, WR, Oklahoma
3 (71) Darian Thompson, S, Boise State
4 (109) B.J. Goodson, ILB, Clemson
5 (149) Paul Perkins, RB, UCLA
6 (184) Jerrell Adams, TE, South Carolina

Day 1: After getting leap-frogged for Georgia OLB Leonard Floyd, the Giants go with Apple, who is one of the best press corners in the draft. Schematically, it’s a curious pick, as New York played pure man coverage only 30.4 percent of the time last year, 21st in the league, so unless the Giants are going to increase that number, Apple’s weaknesses playing in off coverage and in space may get exposed. We had two corners ranked higher on our board than Apple in William Jackson III and Mackensie Alexander.

Day 2: One of the best route-runners in the class, Shepard posted the top overall grade among the nation’s wide receivers a year ago. He’s a shifty slot receiver, but he has shown the downfield ball skills (caught 64.7 percent of his deep attempts) to win on the outside as well. Thompson is good value in the third, as he can complement last year’s second-round safety, Landon Collins. He ranked fifth in college safety grades in the class.

Day 3: Perkins was one of the best picks on Day 3 as he led all running backs with an elusive rating of 114.7. Adams was our second-rated tight end in the class as he’s the top inline blocker with good speed and route running to stretch the seam. The Giants did a nice job with their late picks."

Brugler CBS Sports: Good players go undrafted each year. Here are the top-25 UDFAs from this class, led by Duke safety Jeremy Cash:
"4. Roger Lewis, WR, Bowling Green
Again, another player who is draftable on talent alone, but teams factor in much more when investing draft picks in these prospects. Lewis needs a lot of work as a route runner, but he has receiving traits that translate to the NFL. However, his baggage stretches back to high school with a sexual assault case that leaves Lewis undrafted."

"8. Greg Milhouse, DT, Campbell
An Appalachian State transfer, Milhouse has cat-like quickness for his size and uses his initial momentum to drive interior blockers backwards towards the quarterback. He faces a steep learning curve in the NFL, but he has the traits to be a quality depth player."

Patriots.com: Bill Belichick Post-Draft Press Conference Transcript
"Q: Is the safety/ linebacker hybrid position like Deone Bucannon something that's new, or something that's old but has come back?
Read
BB: I think that you are definitely seeing a strong trend in the league towards corners that play safety or corner-type athletes that play safety, bigger safeties that play linebacker. Both of those are trends. We've always put a lot of premium on the passing game even going back to when we had Eugene Wilson, who played corner at Illinois, and started for us at corner for a couple weeks and then we moved him to free safety, but that was an advantage when teams went to the multiple receivers. Then we already had that third corner on the field and we could go nickel or we could leave our regular defense out there, or leave our corner on the third receiver, what we call penny defense, but things like that. That was really, I'd say, pretty successful for us. Devin [McCourty's] given us some of that, so has [Patrick] Chung. Devin's a corner but not that Chung is a corner, but he has corner qualities, he's had some corner-type responsibilities, particularly in the slot, even going back to when Wes [Welker] was here, and he would cover Wes pretty competitively in practice sessions and things like that. I'd say that has always been something that's, if you have a player that can do that, somewhat appealing. The other problem is if you get mismatched with the receiver against a safety who's not a very good coverage player, then that can blow up in a hurry. Rodney [Harrison] was a guy that you mentioned that was a very good coverage safety even though he was a big physical, and he played the run as well as anybody. He could also cover the run and that's very unusual and that made him very special. You could literally matchup on anybody, receivers, tight ends, blitz him, play him on goal line. He could do it all. He was tremendous. I'd say, yeah, as the offenses have gotten more spread out, as the offenses have put more skill players on the field, as the tight ends have become more athletic and less of the conventional kind of power-blocking type guys, those matchups keep getting tougher and tougher. I'd say there's definitely a movement towards safeties that can play corner or have some corner-like qualities to them and that extends to the linebacker level as well. You see less of the big run stopping Ted Johnson, Brandon Spikes type players. It's just harder when the offense spreads you out and then they go fast and you can't substitute and you're stuck with whoever you have out there, out there. That creates some problems out there, too. The colleges are seeing the same thing and they probably have to deal with it more than we do because there are so many fast-tempo offenses, so they are in the same boat so they are playing a lot of what we call dime defense, or little nickel, or whatever it is, but where they put a lot of fast guys on the field. Ends are playing tackle, safeties are playing linebacker, and corners are playing safety. It's just kind of getting a little bit smaller in a lot of areas. I don't know if that's different., There are some differences but going back to Wilson and Harrison, and those guys from 02-03-04, back in there, there's a lot of similarities to the Chung-Harrison, Chung-McCourty, corner/safety type that had more coverage ability than some other guys that you would see out there."

Gramling MMQB: Questioning the Cowboys’ Plan, the Weirdness of Laremy Tunsil and More From A Silly, Crazy Draft

"Sterling Shepard, WR, N.Y. Giants: This is, quite literally, my favorite player in this draft. I thought he was the second-best receiver in this class after Corey Coleman, but unlike Coleman, Shepard can make an immediate impact.
His floor is very good slot receiver, but I think he can survive outside the numbers. He’s not only quick in and out of cuts, but he has an exceptional feel for setting up routes. And those hands! For a little guy, he does that thing where instead of “digging out” low throws he just reaches down and clutches it like the ball came in chest high. I'm not sure why that makes me so giddy, but it does."

History

Giants Birthdays 5-01

Frank LoVuolo E D7 1949 NYG 1949 5-01-1924

"Billeted in the luxury Villa Prüm on Clervaux's rue Brooch was Sergeant Frank A. LoVuolo, with Battery 'B' of the 107th Field Artillery, who would later play professional football with the New york Giants. He remembered being on guard duty when the artillery barrage began. 'I could hear shell fragments striking the pavement and nearby buildings and was forced to race for protection of the villa,' he recalled. 'Crawling and running, I finally reached the front door.' He slammed it shut behind behind him. 'No one at the time knew what all the German activity really meant. We were completely out of communication with everyone, and stayed put until late morning. At that point in time we heard the clanging and creaking sound of armor coming down the Wiltz road and thought the worst.' The tanks were friendly Shermans and their commander entered LoVoulo's villa and told his group the Germans had broken through their lines in several places. 'He advised us to get out of Clervaux as quickly and as best we could to avoid encirclement. Those were the last semblance of orders I would receive until I rejoined my unit at Christmas. Without hesitation and without packing of our belongings, everyone escaped onto the hillside behind,' becoming part of the ever-growing stream of Americans moving west. 'There was mass confusion and I was a part of it,' admitted LoVoulo.

"Typical of many GI's cast adrift in those first few days Sargeant Frank LoVuolo had begun to make his what cross country in search of his unit. As he recalled, 'This began an eternity of foraging for food, sleeping in barns, sprinting across open fields, and hiding in deep woods. I decided that as long as I was on my own and under no direct orders, I would strive for three objectives, (1), stay alive (2), avoid capture, and (3), find my artillery unit...in that order I succeeded in all three.' "

pp.306-308 Snow and Steel: The Battle of the Bulge, 1944-45 by Peter Caddick-Adams

LoVuolo would also have a part in one of the biggest comebacks in Giants history...on October 30, 1949 the Chicago Cards led the Giants 28-7 at the half, but in the third quarter Jack Salscheider returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a score. A minute later LoVuolo scooped up a Charlie Trippi fumble for another touchdown and the Giants would then build a 34-31 lead on two Gene Roberts plunges into the line for touchdowns. The Cards weren't finished and pulled ahead 38-31 until a Charlie Conerly 68 yard pass to Roberts set up a one yard Joe Scott run for the winning touchdown with four minutes left...

As far as I can tell LoVoulo, Scott, and Trippi are all still alive today...

"Q: Is the safety/ linebacker hybrid position like Deone Bucannon something that's new, or something that's old but has come back?

I spent some time watching more tape of this kid, seems more
like a 'Shady Lite' than a Tiki to me. He is not built
quite like Tiki in the upper body. He is more shifty and
with quick cuts like a McCoy, could be a hidden gem in this draft.
I would like to see him get a legit opportunity starting in Year One, now that Coughlin is gone,
that seems doable.

True, and I was surprised Belichek was so forthcoming with that info. Alot of valuable perspective in it. Kwall has been clamouring for yrs about safeties with cb skills.

Really annoying that the skins got Cravend whos a safety/lbr hybrid. That new GM they have is collecting playmakers for them through the draft since hes got there.... like he helped do in San fran and Seattle.

When Tiki was drafted he was very weak. I remember him saying that when he came into the league he couldn't bench 225 once. He credited his amazing turnaround to his strength program.
