Predict, Who is our starting TE?

Carl in CT : 5/1/2016 1:15 pm
I really hope it's Tye.
Larry Donnell

Tye. He did a good job last season given his limited experience.

Agreed.
I expect that Tye will be used more in between the 20's
superspynyg : 5/1/2016 1:21 pm : link
with Donnell being the big red zone target.
It's Tye and it's not close
BillT : 5/1/2016 1:21 pm : link
Folks here underestimate him but he's got a unique combination of skills. He's fast, can run routes and catch the ball. At 6'2" 260 he's got the size to be an effective blocker though he has to develop better skills there. He played extremely well once he got going last year and has good upside given his excellent athleticism. He isn't going to be beat out by the rookie Adams though I think that Donnell will be.
I think you have to start off with Tye
sjnyfan : 5/1/2016 1:22 pm : link
He earned it with a solid 2015 leading all rookie TE's in receptions but it'll be Adams eventually. He reminds me to much of Jermichael Finley and I'm almost certain McAdoo sees the same of his old TE in GB.
...
BleedBlue : 5/1/2016 1:23 pm : link
id say Tye with Donnell and adams being used in red zone
I'm going with Jerell Adams
Anakim : 5/1/2016 1:27 pm : link
.
I'm not sure Donnell even makes the roster
BillT : 5/1/2016 1:27 pm : link
Tye, Adams, LaCrosse is my guess for the 3 TEs. Donnell has failed to really progress. He still makes the same silly plays jumping around and his blocking is lacking. He's had time to develop those skills and hasn't. I think he's run his course here and drafting Adams is the final nail.

Jay on the Island : 5/1/2016 1:29 pm : link
Donnell
Tye
Adams

Week 17
Tye
Adams
Donnell
I am hoping for Tye but most likely Donnell
Mason : 5/1/2016 1:32 pm : link
Just hoping LaCosse can show enough to make the roster because I think it will force some hard decisions on Donnell.

LaCrosse really? I don't know much about him but beating out Donnell would be kind of an upset...no?
Tye

But it will be by committee.

Yes because he was waive by the Giants and Jets. Both teams looking for TE depth.
I honestly believe it will be Adams. He is the only true in-line TE
NYGmen58 : 5/1/2016 1:42 pm : link
who can block. I like Tye but he's more of an H-back/move TE and a better fit as the #2.
Donnell
old man : 5/1/2016 1:43 pm : link
On a short leash.
If Adams gets his head screwed on right, it could be him and Tye as the #2, in either case.

Like I said, what has Donnell shown in term of improvement? He still can't block, he still does that stupid jump in the air on contact nonsense. Sure he's athletic and can catch but there is more to playing TE than that. He doesn't play ST either. I see LaCrosse as an all around player. Not as good as a pass catcher but better at blocking and can play ST.
I go with Donnell
Doomster : 5/1/2016 1:48 pm : link
He seems to be a better receiver in traffic...most of Tye's receptions, he was left alone by the defense as an afterthought....that won't happen this season...he will get more attention after what he did when Donnell went down.....

I like Cunningham....just doesn't have the experience....

LaCrosse is practice squad....

It will be interesting to see what Adams does in camp....
Gotta think Tye has the upper hand out of the gate
j_rud : 5/1/2016 1:54 pm : link
But I'd say this is going to come down to blocking. Both Tye and Adams are natural pass catchers and I wouldn't be surprised to see some more 2 TE sets this season featuring both of them, especially splitting one out to create some mismatches with LBers and some safeties. But Tye did have some issues as a blocker. By all accounts Adams is a willing blocker and stronger than his somewhat spindly frame would suggest. But, and this is true of nearly every TE prospect, he's going to have to bulk up and get stronger to be an effective in-line blocker at the NFL level.

I'll say Tye, given he has edge in experience and his surprise performance as a rookie. But if Adams picks up the pro game as quickly as Tye did he will be starting at some point this season. It's going to be a very fun camp to watch as this team transitions to a new coach and The "reloading" process takes shape. The entire draft class will be under the microscope with 3 rookies competing'for starting jobs (Shepard, Thompson, and Perkins) and 3 more looking for significant playing time (Apple, Adams, Goodson).
I go with Donnell

Lacosse over Donnell? LaCosse is practice squad....

Hard to believe, these TE's still can't block....from what I see, they react to blocking, instead of being aggressive, and going after their guy. Who the hell is their coach? Oh,.....
I predict that the Giants starting TE will be a player who is not . .
TC : 5/1/2016 2:00 pm : link
a quality NFL TE. Tye comes closest, but to my eye, despite being both strong and fast, he is very stiff and not particularly athletic. Irrespective of Donnell's occasional success, he's a large athlete playing out of position. And that's just how he plays. He doesn't move or play like a TE.

The new guys? We'll see, but I have no reason to think any of them will be more successful than they've recently been.
Hopefully Adams by mid-season
jeff57 : 5/1/2016 2:02 pm : link
Tye is 6-2. How many 6-2 starting TEs are there in thE NFL? Donnell turns the ball over too much.
Will Tye, probably.
shockeyisthebest8056 : 5/1/2016 2:08 pm : link
Unless Donnell suddenly learned ball security and run blocking, I've seen all I need to see from him.

Hopefully, Adams will come in and make it a difficult decision. But we can't expect that much from him so soon.
Donnell is a pussy (from a NFL perspective), but money in the end zone
SHO'NUFF : 5/1/2016 2:46 pm : link
Tye should be our FB/H-back...Adams is RAW.

I like Tye between the 20s, as previously stated, and LD in the Green Zone.
You'd have to give the thumbs up to Tye
Simms11 : 5/1/2016 2:58 pm : link
right now IMO. I think they could bring in Donnell, in certain packages, especially inside the 20. Adams will probably be more of an game day inactive for most of the year, unless he truly suprises.
Donnell, at least going in.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/1/2016 3:15 pm : link
Starters generally don't lose their spots because of injury. If Tye wants the job, he'll have to beat Donnell out. Obviously, if LD is limited by his injury, he isn't assured of anything. LaCosse, Cunningham and Adams are competing for a roster spot. Sixth round picks don't get much latitude.
I'm not going to guess.
Ira : 5/1/2016 3:15 pm : link
All three of these guys are young and have shown progress. We'll see how they develop in pre-season.
Tye
JohnVB : 5/1/2016 3:23 pm : link
With Adams seeing the most snaps mid to late in the season.

Donnell just doesn't look like a natural football player and should be relegated to a backup role.
The fact that the answer
YANKEE28 : 5/1/2016 3:25 pm : link
is such an unknown is a testament to 36 year old TE coach Kevin Gilbride Jr.

Gilbride was given nothing but undrafted free agents (unless you include the JPP of TEs), and as a group they have done surprisingly well since he became TE coach in 2014.

Until he was hurt, LaCosse looked very good, and nobody was even giving a chance to Tye when last training camp started.

Adding Adams in the 6th gives Gilbride another piece to work with.

McAdoo certainly wanted Gilbride on his first staff and I wouldn't rule out any of the TEs Gilbride has been given for this season. 5 solid players will battle for 3 roster spots.

You can't give every unit on your team Day 1 and Day 2 draft picks, and Gilbride Jr has had the least to work with, but done more than any fan could have expected. Come the season opener, the best 3 will surface.
Tye
Sammo85 : 5/1/2016 4:00 pm : link
I think Tye is sufficient as a backup but I don't think much of him as a two way starter. His blocking is okay but his separation, route running, and hands are average. Teams left him wide open a lot last year and a lot of his receptions were gimme catches and garbage time yardage.

I think Adams sees some serious playing time later in the season.
Tye had a nice season especially in the last 5 or 6
Jimmy Googs : 5/1/2016 4:07 pm : link
games. If what he did was average, I will take any day of the week. He was by far the biggest overperformer on the Offense.

And whether you believe he did it only because he was left open or not is just silly. Then let somebody cover him next year and leave another option for Eli exposed. Fine with me (and McAdoo).

If TEs are open versus the Giants, our LBs and Safeties suck. But if our TEs are open they were "gimme catches".

oh BBI...
I'm not a big Donnell fan
dune69 : 5/1/2016 4:15 pm : link
I hope somebody steps up and shines but if it is Donnell, he will get my full support...until he fumbles a few times.

I like Adams, Malleck, and LaCosse as well. Donnell and Cunningham will have to earn it if they want to keep their jobs.

But Tye might take his job by the end of the season
LaCosse was waived because of a hamstring injury.
Klaatu : 5/2/2016 1:01 am : link
The Giants settled with him (instead of putting him on IR) so he could sign with another team, which he did, signing with the Jets. But the injury was still an issue and he was cut by the Jets before the season began.

The Giants thought enough of him to bring him back in November when they needed another TE. I'm not saying he's the second-coming or anything, but he's got good size, speed (for S&G's, compare his pro day numbers to Hunter Hearst Henry's), and he showed soft hands in mini-camp. I'm glad he's getting another chance with the Giants.
with the OL in such a mess
msh : 5/2/2016 5:51 am : link
what about bringing in that 400lb TE from baylor for a try out as i didnt see him get drafted that i recall at least heck play him at RT over newhouse couldnt do much worse

donnell has alot of problems with his back i guess thats why they went for adams has a chance to be the starter they will need tye especially if donnells back is still an issue early on in the season at least
Until we see an unfettered McAdoo offense, and yes
Bob in Newburgh : 5/2/2016 9:37 am : link
TC was a fetterer. He always had the fundamental belief that establishing the run was more important than scoring more points than the other team.

Game sees to be evolving where the TE is really a WR with a size matchup advantage on Ss and and an athleticism advantage over LBs. Blocking is either secondary or of no import whatsoever.

He is by no means my favorite, but it is Donnell who has movement athleticism (although not speed). He seems to be the worst blocker however and does not seem to want to do it.

If we become a passing team, Donnell starts. If we have a core running game, Donnell could be first out on the street.
Donell until he's beaten out
