Does the drafting of Perkins, Sterling & Adams signify

BlueRyder : 5/1/2016 2:35 pm
a downscaling of Coughlin's adherence to the power running game?

McAdoo has replaced Coughlin's influence in the draft process and the Giants immediately draft an elusive all-purpose RB, replace a "procession" with a very quick WR, and actually draft a talented and fast TE. Just guessing there will be less, and less predictable running, and more screens, draws and quick short passes. The days of keeping the number of run and pass plays equal during a game may be over.

Offense will be quicker, uptempo...Wouldn't expect them to force something that wasn't there, as they did with Andre Williams.

...McAdoo is the antithesis of a power running game.

And it's a good thing he is!

We don't have one with the current offensive line configuration.

Which season Tom Coughlin adhered to a power running game?

The answer is never. He's always believed in a vertical passing attack.

Guess you weren't watching last year when time after time TC's stubborn ass would try to force shit that wasn't there in the name of "balance".

We were unproductive rushing the ball last season, that means we were a power rushing team?

One has to look at Tom's offensive coordinators during his tenure here - all of whom ran slight variations of his offense - to know that isn't the case.
I don't think it is anti-Coughlin
Steve in South Jersey : 5/1/2016 3:23 pm : link
it is pro McAdoo and what offense he likes to run.
Mcadoo was the play caller
UConn4523 : 5/1/2016 3:24 pm : link
but it's still TCs ship to run and the ship sunk. It's likely another reason why the Giants are less concerned with the OL than the fans; Mcadoo is likely implementing a new regime built on speed and is happier with what we have than people may want to believe.

2008 was a lot of power runs. With Plax missing practices but showing up on game day issue. Giants asked a lot of that OL and they delivered for the most part. Rex described them as playing old school smash mouth runs. I also think that OL paid for that season too.

Sure, Coughlins style of offense has always been a vertical passing game. Probably had a lot to do with him being so professionally compatible with Gilbride and why he stuck around so long. But the OP isn't wrong. The run game within that offense was a power rush game that favored big OL (as opposed to your prototypical zone blocking OL) and power backs in the 6', 215+ lb range. And while Bradshaw was the outlier size-wise he was still a power back. They brought in Veree n but that doesn't happen without McAdoo.

I agree with the OP, McAdoo has definitely had an influence on the drafting, even in his first season. Or possibly it could just be Reese without Coughlin's input/influence. But with how well the above named guys fit I find that unlikely.

Huh? A vertical passing game doesn't mean you cannot have a power running game. In fact, a vertical passing game and a power running game go hand in hand.
A GM and head coach certainly should be on the same page

That's a really interesting read. The chart makes it obvious, when he's given the elements he needs to run that offense his teams thrive.

2008 was the last season TC emphasized the power rush. After 2008, Nicks/Bradshaw and eventually Cruz become integral parts of the offense. Eli's YPA steadily decline, OL transitions from raid grader types like KMAC and Snee to more adept pass protectors.

That's the way it's been since.

HomerJones45 : 5/1/2016 3:47 pm : link
This is another canard.

Actually, Coughlin was adept at using what was on hand. When he had Natrone Means or Brandon Jacobs or Derrick Ward, it was a power running game. When he had Fred Taylor or Ahmad Bradshaw or Tiki Barber, it wasn't.

As for Perkins, you would think he was the second coming of Jim Brown. A fifth round pick means they could be looking at him as a kick returner for all anyone knows. With Vereen and Jennings around, I don't see a role for him otherwise.

Sheppard, a smaller guy who has already had 3 concussions, may say more about Victor "No really, I'm 100%" Cruz than anything else.

Adams appears to have fallen because he's got a reputation for being lazy, but nevertheless, he's the latest experiment in former b-ball players being converted to tight end. The only difference with Adams is that Jerry is taking them in the 6th round now and not the 4th.

The Giants have been a power running team under Coughlin
robbieballs2003 : 5/1/2016 4:15 pm : link
There are two main styles to a running game; man and zone. A man blocking scheme is synonymous with a power blocking scheme. Having a power running game doesn't mean having a dominant running game. It just means that it is a man on man scheme. There are different types of runs out of this. With a zone blocking scheme the OL have an area or zone not a specific man. There are two main zone runs. They are an inside zone and an outside zone. Not once have we ever been a zone blocking team under Coughlin. He has always wanted to be a dominant running team. He has always had a power running system but just because we had weak offensive lineman doesn't. Meam we didn't have a power blocking team. Once again, power blocking is a style not a result. Yes, we supposedly had some zone concepts under McAdoo as the OC but we were still primarily a man or power blocking team.

I agree. And Williams never belonged in that type of offense. I can't help thinking that Williams was drafted solely because he played at Boston College. The guy reminds me of Ron Dayne. Hand him the ball and he runs into the first defender he sees.

Or an offensive lineman's ass, whichever got in the way first...
Williams issue is that he is a north/south runner with limited vision

and no wiggle.

The problem was also he got little help from his OG (cough... John Jerry) and absolutely no help from his FB or TE.

He's not a threat to catch the ball so defenses are able to load the box on him.

I would like to see him behind a RG who run blocks, a FB that doesn't whiff and a TE who isn't driven back by linebackers.

Not really sure why it was so awful. It was just asking people to forecast the success of the pics given that all are not likely to succeed.
