Someone was asking for video evidence of Perkins' receiving skills. I came across this one on YouTube. He is very good at screens and can run between the tackles. Notice, that UCLA played premier competition.
I can see some of the Tiki comparison.
Perkins - (

Paul Perkins ran his at 4.59
He no doubt has the tools, let's just hope the OL gives him the opportunity to utilize them.
Where are the between the tackle highlights? The tough yard highlights?
Paul Perkins ran his at 4.59
Tiki wasn't a 4.4.

yeah i don't think Tiki ever ran a 4.4. His talent wasn't in his flat out speed, it was his vision and shiftiness and quick acceleration in traffic. When he added enough bulk to break some tackles (and stopped fumbling) is when he took it to the next level
Based on a few videos ive seen of Perkins, including the link above, I can see where the Tiki comparisons come from.

According to this NYT's article, Tiki did in fact, run a 4.4..
Accorsi asked George Welsh, the head coach at Virginia at that time, about Barber's speed, and Welsh led him into the weight room, where all the players' workout records were listed. Barber held the team record for 40 yards, at 4.4 seconds.

And Perkins ran a 4.54. Splitting hairs, but he looks like he's definitely got a 2nd gear.
2nd, I'm glad he has so much experience taking the ball out of the shotgun. That's something we run out of a good amount, and last year Denver had a problem with their RB's not wanting to run out of the shotgun, Peyton's preferred formation.
He has subtle movements in full gear that get extra yards, and I like that, gets defenders off balance with those little cuts, he knows how to set those guys up.
This guy does seem like he fits our team well. I agree with the above poster that said that UCLA line sure did open some pretty big holes for him in a good amount of those plays, though.
Only one RB was drafted in rd 1. Only one was drafted in rd 2, and only two were drafted in rd 3. The vast majority were drafted on day three. At pick #10 of the 5th round (#149 overall), we got excellent value for Perkins.
Guy has great vision, follows his blocks, and makes decisive moves with the ball while always moving north and south. Looks like he's great in space (as is any RB!) but I didn't see a lot of hard contact up the gut type runs.
Love this pic - the guy's going to be a player.
This could very well be Ahmad Bradshaw redux but better. He does bear some resemblance to Bradshaw but much smoother in his change of direction and moving in and out of cuts. Plus I think he has a more explosive better burst then Bradshaw did. Now is he as tough. Bradshaw was one tough cookie.
[quote] He needs to protect the ball better in traffic. It looks exposed and defensive players in the NFL don't look to just tackle you, they look to rip that ball out. He's going to need to work on covering that ball up in traffic.
Perkins has no fumbling issues. The stats is that he had only 2 fumbles in over 700 carries. That is outstanding. Translation? He has no ball security issues.
He DOES remind me of Tiki, in every way but one; he's better at executing screen plays. (in that respect he reminds me of ex Eagle Brian Westbrook). Remember how he used to Kill us with that play ?

I knew someone would say this... look pal, I didn't say he had ball security issues IN COLLEGE. I said, that through my observation, the ball is out there exposed to being ripped out... which is what he will see a lot of people try to do to him in the NFL. I'm not saying he's a fumbler, or has been a fumbler, I'm saying it's a carrying technique he needs to clean up on, or else he MAY end up having an issue in the NFL... NOT COLLEGE, the NFL. Pretty big step up in talent he's going to see.

Having only 2 fumbles in division l NCAA is pretty awesome. Despite the jump in physicality and competition, that number still holds up. I also don't know if I see the carrying issues you do Jim. While his technique needs polishing, he carries the ball right to my eyes.
