Paul Perkins is Electric!!!!!!

dk in TX : 5/1/2016 7:39 pm
Someone was asking for video evidence of Perkins' receiving skills. I came across this one on YouTube. He is very good at screens and can run between the tackles. Notice, that UCLA played premier competition.

I can see some of the Tiki comparison.

Paul Perkins ran his at 4.59
yea i see some Ahmad in him as well

Perkins has more speed and shiftiness though. doesnt really remind me of tiki
I'm with Stan on this

Perkins has more natural running ability then anyone on our roster and IMO, it's not even close. This is one of the players I targeted before the draft but I though he'd go 3rd-4th round and we wouldn't pick a runner that high.
I watched his highlights the other night
kelsto811 : 5/1/2016 8:37 pm : link
It's funny. I have absolutely no credentials on talent evaluation but the first thing I thought of was Tiki when I watched. I think it might just be his running style.
Like his wiggle....
Simms11 : 5/1/2016 8:38 pm : link
this could be a very fun offense to watch this year provided players remain on the field and are all used properly.
I agree
feelflows : 5/1/2016 8:43 pm : link
but the kid still needs a hole to make something happen, something the OL hasn't produced for some time (consistently).

He no doubt has the tools, let's just hope the OL gives him the opportunity to utilize them.
He never was ran out of a pro style offensive

Where are the between the tackle highlights? The tough yard highlights?
If Tiki played

yeah i don't think Tiki ever ran a 4.4. His talent wasn't in his flat out speed, it was his vision and shiftiness and quick acceleration in traffic. When he added enough bulk to break some tackles (and stopped fumbling) is when he took it to the next level

Based on a few videos ive seen of Perkins, including the link above, I can see where the Tiki comparisons come from.
there's a run at about the 1:10 mark of the linked video
mfsd : 5/1/2016 9:38 pm : link
that is very much a Tiki-esque run
Tiki trained his ass of too

According to this NYT's article, Tiki did in fact, run a 4.4..

Quote:
Powell was sure Barber would be drafted early in the first round. But Barber struggled at the N.F.L. combine; his time in the 40-yard dash was terrible, nearly 4.6. ''I've never run that slow,'' Barber said

Accorsi asked George Welsh, the head coach at Virginia at that time, about Barber's speed, and Welsh led him into the weight room, where all the players' workout records were listed. Barber held the team record for 40 yards, at 4.4 seconds.

He's quick. Let's hope our O-line

And Perkins ran a 4.54. Splitting hairs, but he looks like he's definitely got a 2nd gear.
boy, what I see in the video linked in the OP
ColHowPepper : 5/1/2016 10:19 pm : link
is a nice runner, yes, but what really stands out is a dominant UCLA offensive line, which either has the DL pushed back four yards as the run unfolds or has nice clean holes through which to run. I didn't see one play that looked like the NYGiants' OL where the RB had no place to run and had to try to make something out of nothing. We shall see.
Those last few runs
VanPelt/Manning#10 : 5/1/2016 10:20 pm : link
were especially impressive. Nice highlight reel and a lot to be excited about. But as pointed out above, one can see reasons he wasn't drafted in the first couple of rounds. Don't get me wrong -- I can't wait to see Perkins in action and think he will be a great addition and, hopefully, a future star!
Couple observations about Perkins
allstarjim : 5/2/2016 12:32 am : link
He needs to protect the ball better in traffic. It looks exposed and defensive players in the NFL don't look to just tackle you, they look to rip that ball out. He's going to need to work on covering that ball up in traffic.

2nd, I'm glad he has so much experience taking the ball out of the shotgun. That's something we run out of a good amount, and last year Denver had a problem with their RB's not wanting to run out of the shotgun, Peyton's preferred formation.

He has subtle movements in full gear that get extra yards, and I like that, gets defenders off balance with those little cuts, he knows how to set those guys up.

This guy does seem like he fits our team well. I agree with the above poster that said that UCLA line sure did open some pretty big holes for him in a good amount of those plays, though.

Only one RB was drafted in rd 1. Only one was drafted in rd 2, and only two were drafted in rd 3. The vast majority were drafted on day three. At pick #10 of the 5th round (#149 overall), we got excellent value for Perkins.
Line blocks pretty good.

a clone of Tiki - amazing.

Guy has great vision, follows his blocks, and makes decisive moves with the ball while always moving north and south. Looks like he's great in space (as is any RB!) but I didn't see a lot of hard contact up the gut type runs.

Love this pic - the guy's going to be a player.
Kid can really tote the rock
blueblood'11 : 5/2/2016 6:52 am : link
I watched a lot video on him. What I find amazing is that prior to the draft Bleacher Report had him as the second back to go behind Elliot. For whatever reason people forgot about him and now he's a Giant. Why he fell so far is hard to understand.

This could very well be Ahmad Bradshaw redux but better. He does bear some resemblance to Bradshaw but much smoother in his change of direction and moving in and out of cuts. Plus I think he has a more explosive better burst then Bradshaw did. Now is he as tough. Bradshaw was one tough cookie.

If he learns his blocking assignments, he will start early in the season.

Perkins has no fumbling issues. The stats is that he had only 2 fumbles in over 700 carries. That is outstanding. Translation? He has no ball security issues.

thanks for the larger context, which does cast Perkins in an even better light. Of course, the competition increases at this level, so I hope he can maintain his ability to run past/around people and shed tackles.
His MOST impressive trait ....
Manny in CA : 5/2/2016 11:09 pm : link
I that he consistently makes the first tackler miss - the sign of all good halfbacks.

He DOES remind me of Tiki, in every way but one; he's better at executing screen plays. (in that respect he reminds me of ex Eagle Brian Westbrook). Remember how he used to Kill us with that play ?
A bit off topic but

Tiki Barber is criminally underrated by a lot of people, including us Giants fans

I knew someone would say this... look pal, I didn't say he had ball security issues IN COLLEGE. I said, that through my observation, the ball is out there exposed to being ripped out... which is what he will see a lot of people try to do to him in the NFL. I'm not saying he's a fumbler, or has been a fumbler, I'm saying it's a carrying technique he needs to clean up on, or else he MAY end up having an issue in the NFL... NOT COLLEGE, the NFL. Pretty big step up in talent he's going to see.

Having only 2 fumbles in division l NCAA is pretty awesome. Despite the jump in physicality and competition, that number still holds up. I also don't know if I see the carrying issues you do Jim. While his technique needs polishing, he carries the ball right to my eyes.
Another thing I like about him is that he has a way
Ira : 5/4/2016 6:20 am : link
of choosing the right hole to turn into. Also, if he sees a defender about to close a hole, he'll fake going into that hole and then take it outside. He's a very smart, instinctive running back.
