Yesterday put a bad taste
ZGiants98 : 5/2/2016 9:22 am : link
in my mouth (for many reasons). Its a new week and a new series. Braves have been terrible but they likely aren't THAT bad, are they? Positives. Harvey and deGrom both had big velocity gains the last time through the order. Negatives. Thor looked very human yesterday. Lets get back on track tonight.

Yes the Braves are that bad especially with Fredi at the helm and Inciarte being out. They are slowly bringing up their prospects as Mallex Smith has been heating up and Aaron Blair has looked very good so far. Their offense is atrocious even with Freeman heating up.

The braves had a pretty tough schedule in the early going so that didnt help. But if this bad play continues, better it be with young guys rather than veteran retreads.

The problem is that the Braves don't want to lose a year of control on any of their prospects right now on a terrible season. They have several prospects who belong in the majors today but are getting held behind. Top SS prospects Ozzie Albies was just promoted to AAA and Dansby Swanson was promoted to AA. Albies was leading the league in hits and was batting .369/.430/.519 despite being the youngest player in the league by over a year.
Swanson was hitting .346/.454/.580 in High A and went 2-3 with a 2B and HR in his AA debut.
Just as I say that

least the Braves are awful with a big time farm (and reportedly Maitan being added as well). Imagine being a team like the Brewers?

Could be worse than that. Imagine being the Angels with Trout and a whole of nothing to look forward too? Angels may have to trade Trout before its all said and done.

the Angels too. I just find it funny seeing people knock the Braves (mostly on twitter). I actually love their approach. Don't really understand why they signed Markakis if this was the plan but otherwise they are 100% doing what I would do if running a team. Is it really more appealing to win 76 games vs. 66 games? Who cares at that point? Find some gems, trade off veterans at the deadline and load up the farm. Mike Soroka seems money.

I am enjoying reading the Braves daily minor league reports because almost all of their top pitching prospects are looking great. There is rumor that the Braves also have a 3 million dollar deal agreed to with the top IFA catcher Abraham Gutierrez as well as Maitan. The best news so far for Braves fans is the incredible turnaround of Lucas Sims. He has been pitching great especially since he was promoted to AAA and he is their #1 pitching prospect right now IMO until of course Allard gets healthy and starts pitching.

Nobody knows why they traded for Olivera either but at least they could trade Markakis at the deadline for more prospects. The O's reportedly made an offer for him before the season started but the Braves reportedly told them "not yet." Soroka and Sims have been the best so far. Ellis surprisingly has been great as well and has much better control. Everyone forgets about Max Fried also.

I should probably warn everyone about Donald Trump while I'm there then.

why they traded their only two good prospects for Simmons is beyond me. How can you sell trading Trout to your fanbase?

Yeah the Olivera one doesn't make a ton of sense either. Their scouts obviously really liked him (they were the runner ups signing him) and in general scouts seemed high on him. Most expected him to get roughly the money they did. I guess they felt if he was a league average regular for that price it would have been a "bargain".

I'm able to disconnect myself from the fact certain prospects play for the Mets "enemies" so I find it cool reading about prospect X doing really well for a team even if it's the Braves or Phillies. I obviously won't feel that way when they are called up.

That's funny I find myself rooting for Mets prospects Rosario which I have no idea why. I guess I like the thought of every team in the division with a young star shortstop.
Rosario
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2016 10:48 am : link
is pretty cool in that he has a big personality and is truly bilingual. The Mets haven't really had a bilingual star in a few years. Yeah they have guys who can speak English but none of the current Latin players are going to give an extended interview in fluent English.
I
DanMetroMan : 5/2/2016 10:49 am : link
should say Wilmer speaks excellent english but he's far from a "star" in a marketable way.

he's throwing batting practice fastballs to the hottest lineup in baseball. I don't think he's thrown a single offspeed pitch under 90 for a strike.
