When a player is unfairly condemned after the draft, it might impact a player's image. When it happens during the draft, it can impact their wallet. While Tunsil's agent was on the phone furiously calling teams to tell them the bong picture "is not who he is," Gruden was telling teams and the world not to draft him.
At minimum, Gruden owes Tunsil an apology. At maximum, compensation.
After the 6th pick was made, Gruden got warmed up by blaming Tunsil and Twitter instead of the hacker.
"This whole thing makes me sick. This whole social media scene makes me sick." Gruden said on the broadcast. "If you're a young kid out there, put away your Twitter accounts, all right, if you want to be a pro football player. Somebody's gonna hack your account." Lonk - ( New Window )
Laremy Tunsil, but was scared off because of Jon Gruden's opinion? I'm not in the habit of demonizing weed smokers, but what Tunsil did was incredibly stupid and HE cost HIMSELF. He's got no one to blame but himself.
All that being said, I still would've taken him at 10.
so be it. That's probably a reasonable opinion. But the notion that he was somehow responsible for the slide in his draft spot is more than a little silly.
this picture is Tunsil right? Teams reported to people like Mayock and Gruden seeing this picture changed their evaluation of Tunsil.
Blame Tunsil. If you think there's is nothing wrong with this picture (it was allegedly from a couple years ago blame the NFL teams) but unless the NFL changes their marijuana policy this picture is alarming. and I wouldn't be that shocked if the NFL places him in step 1 drug program from day 1.
was tough but fair. He did walk it back a bit later and said he felt bad about it, and said he did feel some sympathy for Tunsil. But the main thing is that actions have consequences, and I think that's what both men were talking about.
Gruden, nor Mayock, owes Tunsil anything. Tunsil is a big boy, he can handle the consequences of his mistakes. And further, it was the hacker that leaked it.
Gruden's job is to give opinions and color, in this case, for the draft. He did his job.
I did not agree with ESPN, while Tunsil was still on the board, blasting the image of Tunsil in the bong-mask. I thought that was classless. They could've talked about it and at least held on to the image until after it was drafted.
video or the act that I found weird. Tunsil's actions and words after the fact have been just, not good. "I'm just hear to play football" "I just wanna talk about the Dolphins." C'mon man...show some humility at least.
didn't drop only because teams learned he was smoking marijuana.
Tunsil dropped mostly because he was stupid enough to knowingly allow himself to be filmed while taking bong hits out of a gas mask.
I'm sick of people making this an argument that the league is too strict when it comes to weed. The league is too strict when it comes to weed in the sense that the punishments for positive marijuana tests are too much. But in the case of Tunsil, we're not arguing about a test.
NFL teams -- employers, in this case -- would like to know the player they're investing in has a good head on their shoulders. Even if it was 4 or 6 or 8 years ago, Tunsil was still a mightily talented football player. He knew that as he looked into a camera, which is way more concerning than any positive weed test.
The league isn't remotely tough when it comes to weed.

Ummm...illegally going into someone else's account and posting or making public a private video would be wrong 100 out of 100 times.
Fault falls to Tunsil for his actions "2 years prior", but also for the criminal who made this public.

what a square you are. The kid took a bong hit two years ago. You ever take a bong hit? Most Americans have. Mayock should focus his anger on the nfl who actively hides the realities of concussions by various means. Come on

He tried that and end up implicating himself on a pay to play violation.
Like many people do at his age he didn't use good judgment. Most get away with it but some don't and he is one that didn't as it came back to bite him in the rear. Hard to hold anyone else responsible for that.
He still still is going to make a lot of money and if he learns from this and keeps his head on straight going forward he will have a good chance of making back the money he cost himself many times over.
That Tunsil illegally took money from a booster and got caught and suspended. He's also involved in a lawsuit where he physically fought his stepfather. Now this idiotic weed thing? It's icing on the cake, not the reason he was passed over. It shows a pattern of piss poor decision making, I wouldn't hire him, would you?
who think that video is closer to 6 months old than 2 years, but nevertheless, it isn't the pot smoking that teams dropped him for, it was another instance of poor judgment or decision making

So Tunsil can sue the hacker. Good luck with that. If the hacker found child porn on his phone would you feel the same way?
It's Tunsil's fault he dropped. Period.
and he dropped to 13, so it's not like a La'el Collins situation either - where if that guy got hosed it's a different story (not sure all the details ever came out there).

Those dam hackers, now they're making people smoke dope.
A lot about the kid. The NYG have pretty good access in inside info at Ole Miss. They passed for a reason. There were several scouting reports prior to the draft that were less than flattering in terms of on field performance (on this board). He apparently did not run at combine so as to be "fresh: for on field. Also was injured and missed a fair amout of time.
I have no problem with the Giants passing. How motivated will he be once he gets paid?
If you buy the Twitter hack story, then the hacker is the only person who may him anything. The pictures and video are him. This was enough to drop him.
I like Apple a lot, I actually love our draft. We need a RT in the worst way, I pray we are smart enough and not stubborn enough to realize that and trade for davis or pry someone else loose. I think we are on the precipice of having our best year in many a season. On Tunsil, out of a possible 35 games he has missed 6 or 7 to injury..slight red flag. Admitting he took money from a coach. Not seemingly overly bright. The coach did nothing wrong btw. NCAA is pathetic Tunsil should have kept his mouth shut and protected the coaches that helped him pay his moms electric bill. I am trying to say I am not so furious Giants passed on him but...but. A 18-21 year old kid taking a Bong Hit? All those holier than thou fucking pricks on tv. I have pulled probably 1000..no way..much more 10000 bong hits. I have a nice job, a family 2 kids. I am an active member of my community and many boards. I still smoke right now. Just did on saturday. Fuck you and your 1940s bullshit. Pot is not even a drug. It does nothing to enhance your ability to play a sport, it does not make you overly agressive at all. It makes you chill and thats about it. If we passed on him due to that video? Shame on us. Its going to be legal soon how about "who cares that a college kid pulled a hit" I don't get it. Its not coke or crack or heroin, There is no gateway drug bullshit. We better have not passed on him due to that video.

The point in passing on Tunsil sailed way over your head.
He is alleged (by his own teammate) to be using synthetic marijuana. He has questions about his strength, conditioning, work ethic, and ability to sustain blocks. There is plenty to make him drop.
After seeing the picture the Ravens removed Tunsil completely from their draft board.
All that being said, I still would've taken him at 10.
I agree with him.

There a many people more deserving of our pity.

NFL is a company built around family entertainment
do you really have a hard time grasping why the NFL doesn't want to embrace illegal drug use?
yes indeed

Most idiotic thing I have ever heard. I guess this Hulk Hogan ruling is making every lawyer think they have a lawsuit for loss of compensation
I don't see how what Gruden said was that wrong - and if anything, what they said about our 6th round pick being stupid sounds far worse.
The point in passing on Tunsil sailed way over your head.
How hard is it to realize this isn't about smoking pot - it is the use of bad judgment and poor decision-making, across the board in many areas?

As usual, you don't make any sense.
