NYDN: Gruden owes Tunsil apology, possibly millions

Cruzin : 5/2/2016 2:02 pm
When a player is unfairly condemned after the draft, it might impact a player's image. When it happens during the draft, it can impact their wallet. While Tunsil's agent was on the phone furiously calling teams to tell them the bong picture "is not who he is," Gruden was telling teams and the world not to draft him.

At minimum, Gruden owes Tunsil an apology. At maximum, compensation.

After the 6th pick was made, Gruden got warmed up by blaming Tunsil and Twitter instead of the hacker.

"This whole thing makes me sick. This whole social media scene makes me sick." Gruden said on the broadcast. "If you're a young kid out there, put away your Twitter accounts, all right, if you want to be a pro football player. Somebody's gonna hack your account."

Josh Gordon basically hasn't played in 2 seasons not because he's a bad guy but because he literally has zero ability to show good judgement. What's worse - he's never the one to blame when something happens to him. This notion that Tunsil is somehow clean of all blame for the multitude of issues he's facing - is just classic excuse making BS.

did anyone ask him if he ever smoked weed?
rasbutant : 5/2/2016 3:24 pm : link
If they did and he said no, its a problem. But what if he said yes? What would the opinions be then?
he took that bong rip

like a champ, that doesn't come from minimal smoking, likely pot head IMO.

I don't care about the pot, but his poor judgement is the crux of everything and why he fell. Its not that hard to understand.

Nothing sailed over my head as usual your posts are cryptic and meant to be mean spirited. Judgement...the kid is 21. This video was taken sometime when the kid was 19,20 or 21. How about you using judgement and realizing it is a college kid taking a bong hit. Unbelievable.

He is playing football. Not running for president or flying an airplane. He didn't hit a woman, steal anything or use homophobic slurs. Love Apple, love our draft. Legalize the stuff and make this a non issue for the next kid.
100% Tunsil's fault.

You realize Tunsil isn't like...a normal college kid right? He's a professional, with a business investing millions of dollars into his decision making. Do you seriously not understand the difference?
No. It's not just about pot.
SanFranNowNCGiantsFan : 5/2/2016 3:39 pm : link
It's his judgement. This is a kid who 1) allowed himself to be videotaped smoking from a bong, 2) took $ from an Ole Miss coach, 3) is being sued by his step-father for assault, & 4) was with Nkemdiche when he fell out of a hotel window.

This isn't one incident. This is a pattern of questionable decision making.

What does all that matter? It goes against the rules of the NFL regardless of you disagreeing with them or not. If he's a suspension waiting to happen what GM wouldn't take that into consideration? Add in the lawsuit, taking money, and whatever else, you have several scenarios that all represent poor judgement.

Blame Tunsil. If you think there's is nothing wrong with this picture (it was allegedly from a couple years ago blame the NFL teams) but unless the NFL changes their marijuana policy this picture is alarming. and I wouldn't be that shocked if the NFL places him in step 1 drug program from day 1.

I've been reading BBI since 2005 and this honestly might be the most moronic post I've ever read. So the hacker isn't at fault? I really can't comprehend how illogical your train of thought is. So you have NEVER emailed something to someone that you might be embarrassed for the whole world to find out? Someone ILLEGALLY signed onto this guy's social media account and posted this stuff. If you want to say that Tunsil should have never done that or allowed it to be photographed, I agree. But wow.

If I allow myself to be photographed or videotaped doing something illegal, and that winds up, no matter how, becoming public, then no I will not blame someone else for my actions becoming public.

This is a message board not a courtroom and the picture speaks for itself and the commentary was mostly around the picture even existing, which is mostly why he dropped.

It's icing on the cake, not the reason he was passed over. It shows a pattern of piss poor decision making, I wouldn't hire him, would you?

I won't defend anything the kid has done, or has been alleged to have done.

I'll say this, though. Dealing with a lot of high school boys in our AAU basketball program, several of whom come from conditions that sometimes make me stare in disbelief at how the kids even manage a smile on their faces at times, I can understand how it would be extremely, extremely difficult to turn down money from someone who wanted to offer it. Some of these kids have nothing, and are thin because they literally don't eat much food. Tunsil made that mistake, but I place that one on a sliding scale, personally.

I'm curious about why he physically fought the step-father. Might make me feel one way or another to know the reasons such a thing happened. Another one of our boys moved into the mom's house with the mom last fall. The guy became abusive. The kid (a sophomore) stepped in between. No blows, but pushing and shoving ... yadda yadda yadda, the boyfriend booted them both and they stayed in the attic of a teammate's family from October to last month.

The gas mask? I got nuthin'. Dumb ass.

yea they are bad. One was a president. The other a senator and likely president. And as for Eli it's worse cause alcohol is more addictive and more harmful. These factors mitigate Tunsil smoking a bong in comparison. There is no debate. If you object to Tunsil you must of objected to Eli, especially considering at that time the rookie pay scales were higher.
A few thoughts
Matt M. : 5/2/2016 5:24 pm : link
1) This is not simply about a picture with a bong.

2) That said, the bong is also attached to a gas mask to enhance the high, which makes it a little worse.

3) His own teammate said he uses synthetic marijuana, which is a much larger concern.

4) He has other character issues and on field issues.

5) As I understand it, he didn't take money to pay his mother's bills. He wrote to some school official inquiring as to why his mother's bills haven't been paid. This is damning as it is written proof of accepting money he shouldn't have. Of course, this is more likely to negatively impact the school than Tunsil at this point.

Matt M. : 5/2/2016 5:29 pm : link
It was an asinine response that also had no credibility on any level. His own response wasn't much better. And it doesn't really matter if his account was hacked. That is him in the video.
One last point about Gruden specifically
Matt M. : 5/2/2016 5:35 pm : link
How could he owe Tunsil anything? He was doing what he was paid to do. It is no different than offering his opinion on any other draft prospect. Now, if he had made up drug accusations as the basis for his opinion, then you could be on to something. But, he commented in response, in part, to the video. He had other reasons for his opinion.
Compensation? Millions?
njm : 5/2/2016 5:39 pm : link
1. Isn't truth an absolute defense to any slander allegation? He DID smoke pot and he DID take money.

2. Deej can answer this, but is Tunsil a public figure? That would make it even harder for him to win.

3. Negative comments causing his draft stock to fall? If that's the sole basis, then every draft columnist would be liable anytime they said a player was slow, even though he ran a 5.9 40.

Utterly ridiculous.

It's not the pot. It's the lack of maturity. And seeing as how these teams are investing millions into these players, I can see them mitigating risk and passing on him.

I actually support legalization of pot and would gladly partake if it didn't jeopardize my livelihood - particulally if there were millions of dollars at stake. Otherwise, I'd have to explain to my family why we can't pay the rent or eat.
