NFT: Question for scotch enthusiasts

BNY Giants Club : 5/2/2016 2:26 pm
I'm visiting New Orleans and just had a tasting flight of Laphroaig 10yr, MacAllan 12yr, and Glenmorangie Nectar D'or. Pretty new to the game. Liked the Laphroaig the best (maybe b/c of the smokiness?). Any suggestions on where to steer me next based on this?
not much help here

I was the worst scotch drinker ever. Now I hardly drink, but when I did, the general rule of thumb was, the cheaper the better...I liked Dewars and Grants....HAHAHA
One of my favorite easier to drink scotches is the GlenMorangie 10yr.
NoPeanutz : 5/2/2016 2:30 pm : link
It's considerably cheaper than NectarDor, and would be interesting to compare.
There are 5 scotch producing regions.
Jim in Fairfax : 5/2/2016 2:33 pm : link
Speyside, the Lowlands, the Highlands, Islay, and Campbeltown.

Laphroig is an Islay malt, so you might want to try some others.

For its price its a really good value.

OP, you can go a ton of different directions, really depends on how much you are willing to spend. Once you are over $50/$60 a bottle, there's a noticeable difference in quality. Below $50 and you are more or less going to be hit and miss on what you like, atleast in my experience.

If you like
pjcas18 : 5/2/2016 2:36 pm : link
Laphroaig you might like Laguvalin

if you like Macallan try either Oban (Highland) or the Balvenie (speydside).

I forget which style Macallan is, speyside or highland but I find it similar to both.

I really like laphroaig (islay).

That's funny Jim
BNY Giants Club : 5/2/2016 2:37 pm : link
B/c I had an 8 year blended called Islay Mist that I liked due to its smokiness so maybe I'll stick to that region.
thanks for the heads up

Nopeanuts and Uconn
they have Lagavullin 16, pjcas
BNY Giants Club : 5/2/2016 2:41 pm : link
So maybe I'll give that a shot.

good stuff. I also like the Laphroaig quarter cask.
to expand on this thread anyone have good single malt recommendations?
OBJ_AllDay : 5/2/2016 2:43 pm : link
I play it as safe as can be and normally stick with the johnny black but looking to expand. Normally theres great advice on these threads.
Balvenie 12 is awesome
UConn4523 : 5/2/2016 2:46 pm : link
had some lastnight, roughly $60 a bottle.

Side note to those Irish Whiskey drinkers but the Redbreast 12 that BBI recommended is amazing. Probably the best booze I've had in its pricerange ($50).

Try the Talisker 10. It's a component of JWB and is a medium peated Islay. Might work for you. (BTW, I'm a JWB guy as well)
I'm a novice so I stick mostly to Speysides...

Glenrothes is very good, as is Dalwhinnie. Highland Park and Scapa have a sweet taste to them, there isn't an Orcadian category because there are only a couple distilleries but they're interesting and not too harsh.

Islay faves

Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Ardbeg, Caol Ila
It might depend in part on what you liked about the Laphroaig.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/2/2016 3:11 pm : link
If you want the smoke with a little less burn, you might try Ardbeg.
Damn you, JonC.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/2/2016 3:12 pm : link
Beat me to the Ardbeg while I was spell-checking.

My buddy actually got the Balvenie 14yr when we went to the Giants/Pats game last year. Maybe the smoothest scotch I ever tasted.
Lagavulin 16yr
BNY Giants Club : 5/2/2016 3:15 pm : link
Wow.
My son recently gave me a Bottle of Ballantine's 17 yr. old.
scouser : 5/2/2016 3:26 pm : link
It's a blend, I believe, but very nice. You can't buy it in the states. My son picked it up in Frankfurt. I thought it was only available in the UK, but apparently it's also available in Europe.
AnCnoc 12 yr.
JerseyCityJoe : 5/2/2016 3:29 pm : link
One of the best Scotches you can buy for $50 and under. IMHO

Is it good? I skipped it for the 12 year Doublewood because i heard the 14 is too sweet. Definitely don't want sweet.

mattlawson : 5/2/2016 3:56 pm : link
Ardbeg is really good.

I like that, but prefer the cleaner stuff. Balvenie 12 is my all around company pour to start with. Special occasions I like Macallan 15.

Since its matured in rum casks, it will pick up those sweet spice flavors like vanilla and caramel, with a bit of candied fruit. Its not sugary sweet, but definitely a smooth whisky.

Nice. Maybe i'll give it a go next time I run out.
The Islay scotch makers are a fine lot
gidiefor : Mod : 5/2/2016 4:21 pm : link
love those smokey peaty flavors - moving more to the peaty taste is the Spey side and that is where Balvenie is made -- love those Balvenies -- can;t drink scotch anymore but I can get wistful
If you like peaty
JerseyCityJoe : 5/2/2016 4:31 pm : link
Try the 10 yr. Laphroig small cast. Tastes like the inside of a fireplace. Yikes its peaty.
While I am most often drinking the Highlands/Speyside labels...
pganut : 5/2/2016 4:37 pm : link
...with the aforementioned Balvenie Caribbean Cask and Macallan 12/15 being my "house scotches", I also enjoy mixing it up with the peaty boys, so Lagavulin and Laphroig are great change-of-paces for me. And for the sake of trying something new, I recently bought a bottle of Jura Superstition. It's also an island scotch (from Jura) and has a really nice peaty lingering, smoky and malt-y. Worth a shot and fairly inexpensive to boot. Made up of whiskies aged for 13 years and 21 years, with 13 percent heavily peated malt.
if you liked Laphroiag, try Lagavulin
Victor in CT : 5/2/2016 4:59 pm : link
same Islay region, very peaty and smoky but not as harsh as Laphroaig
Another vote for the Balvenie 12
Matt M. : 5/2/2016 5:18 pm : link
The Doublewood 12 year is smoother than a lot of 15 and 18 years I've tried and a reasonable price for an "everyday" type of Scotch.
lagavulin 16

there is no other
Talisker

From the island of Islay
It's really unique because you can taste the seaweed and salt water from the air that has permeated the barrel over 10 years!
Really amazing!

I feel like I'm at the sea when I drink it.
Talisker review:
Daniel in Kentucky : 5/2/2016 7:38 pm : link
Nose: Thick, pungent smoke. Notes of kippers, seaweed, apple peels. Fresh and fragrant.

Palate: Full bodied with huge plumes of smoke and volcanic, peppery peat. Intense.

Finish: Long finish, barley, malt.
I hate smoky peaty...
manh george : 5/2/2016 10:10 pm : link
in spite of that, there are two Islays I like more than the others. 1) Lagavulin 16 year. 2) Ardberg 10 year.

If you are willing to go away from Islay smoky peaty, but want something big, powerful and balanced, Aberlour A'Bunadh is worth a shot.

Btw, the Nector D'Or is a dessert scotch, having spent its last year in Sauternes casks. It really isn;t comparable to practically anything else.

Great review site linked.

you to the Red Breast. I always throw it out there on the Scotch threads. I'm glad someone shares my enthusiasm for it. Red Breast is awesome, and I think most scotch drinkers would enjoy it as an alternative additional choice to their favorite scotch. Smoooove!
