How will the CB's and WR's be Utilized with New Draft Picks?

kash94 : 5/2/2016 5:29 pm
Now that Apple and Shepard have been drafted with the Giants' first two picks respectively, it will be interesting to see how exactly they're used next year.

In terms of the CB"s...
On one hand, it may seem simple to just insert Apple into the #3 Nickel/slot CB role as he's the 3rd most talented CB on the roster. However, does Apple have the skillset to play Nickel given his handsiness and aggression? Perhaps Jenkins play slot during Nickel and Dime while Apple plays on the outside? Or maybe another CB will be the answer in the slot while Apple is insurance on the outside and plays in Dime packages?

In terms of the WR's....
For Shepard although it seems like he can play both inside and out, a lot of BBI has been saying how he seems more of a Cruz replacement on the inside rather than a #2 outside receiver (i.e. replacement for Randel). Maybe one of White or Dabble plays on the outside while a three way battle between Harris, Cruz, and Shepard will occur for the inside?

What do you all think or am I overanalyzing this?

injury, preseasons, cuts, etc will play huge factors the next few months but was looking for thoughts at this particular moment
Typically the rookie gets to work just one position

I would think Apple, given he was an outside guy, would come in on the outside in the 3CB sets and push Jenkins inside given he's a vet and more familiar with both roles in the pros. Isn't that what they did another rookie DB, maybe TT?

Same could be true for Shepard given Cruz can play both inside and out and then Shepard could concentrate on the outside. However, Shepard has played both so much at OU he could possibly play both in the pros. Of course, Cruz's health plays into that as well.

I agree that Apple will probably play outside in 3cb sets.

I think they'd like for both Shepard and Cruz to play both inside and out.
I think if it were Gilbride's system I'd be more concerned

about WR positions, McAdoo really does seem to move people around, much as Green Bay does so I really don't think it is an issue. Those WRs will be all over the place.

I was not among the happy fans when we picked shep, who I view as a slot receiver. In my opinion, we needed a big physical possession receiver to play the X, next to Beckham's Y. However, with creativity this personnel grouping can still work. It can still work if, and only if, Shep can play at least near league average outside. If so, the usage/solution is simple. Move all three of ODB, Cruz, and Shep around as close to randomly as possible. Keep the D guessing. Also, pre-snap motion will obviously be our friend.

Utilize Apple as an outside corner. Jenkins has the physical attributes, and the experience to handle the slop in DB rich alignments. As to if you assign a half of the field to Apple, or have DRC shadow the best WR not in the slot is up to the coaches. Based on the YouTube clips of Apple I have watched so far, I would protect him, by having DRC follow the tougher assignment.

Apple IS the nickel corner, or plays outside and Jenkins slides in to cover the slot when they go nickel, which will be most of the time, so what difference does it make? They will all be on the field one way or another. Please dont let injuries force other CBs to play, unless they want to go with 4 corners (Trevin Wade).

I'm not going to say "hopefully", Victor Cruz is going to be the second WR and Sheppard the 3rd, but the 3 wr set is going to have 2 guys open at all times, not to mention the TE or the RB.

Buckle up, it's going to be a wild ride.
If you listened to Reese and McAdoo on WFAN

They addressed these two points.

They think both Cruz and Shep can play both slot and on the outside. As to Apple, they're going to move them around, with Jenkins playing slot on certain downs and situations.

I think that's what will happen. The Shepard and Perkins selections indicates what McAdoo plans on offense.

Yes, I first thought this as well. I thought we needed a red zone threat next to OBJ to make us much better inside the 20. However, Sheppard may be the perfect fit next to OBJ. They most likely will line up all three WR's in different spots. It is much easier to roll coverage when you know you have say (Treadwell) who probably won't burn you deep on one side. Now you have two guys that can burn you deep while also running quality routes underneath the deep throws. Shep also has big catch radius like OBJ. Lots of creativity available for Mac.
