NFT: Anybody have experience using a straight razor?

chopperhatch : 5/2/2016 5:38 pm
I wear a beard, and I try to keep the lines tight. I use a clipper/trimmer, but for detailing, using a Gillette Fusion is really tough. Straight razor I figure will make it easier to line up.

I was wondering if this is a mistake and I don't know what I'm in for leading to lots of cuts. Also wanted to know whether I should go with a blade or one of the ones with inserts. Brand recommendations would also help.

Thanks!
Straight blade is certainly the way to go to keep it lined up

Any brand will do, just takes getting used to. Have alcohol handy in case of a cut here or there, conditioner o found works better than shaving cream for me at least.
Yes

But I will deny it in a court of law. Guy had it coming.
I use a straight blade to shave because I have a goatee

Great for edges but the downside is that a blade should not be used more than three times. They dull very easy and a dulled blade will leave your face looking like a minefield.
I keep one in my boot.

When you say straight blade, you mean a replaceable? Or a blade that needs honing and sharpening?
Ice

I use cold water on my face to shave. I actually use ice cubes if I have the time. The colder the water the better.

I discovered it because of one of those storms from a few years ago.

Google it. I'm not the only one. Closest shave ever.

He's trying to get me to try it. I'm cheap so it's not going to happen.
Check out the forum on the Badger and Blade website. Apparently they have a good forum for noobs.
I have had considerable success...

If you're cheap it would seem up your alley. You'd never have to buy another razor blade.
Judging by the razors my friend buys...

No way. He has easily spent hundreds of dollars on these things.
I don't maintain facial hair

but wouldn't an electric trimmer be the best tool for this?

With double-sided "safety razors", I get 100 blades for like 10 dollars. The initial investment costs more than a plastic gilette blade, but after that, it's much less costly.
I used double edged razor

blades, not a straight edge razor like a barber uses and the one I had you buy a razor unscrew the top and put the blade in. like below.

It took me hours to convince my wife I was not trying to kill myself.

My face and neck looked like a dartboard

tried a couple more times after that and similar results.

it was great for edges though.
