Veteran CB Leon Hall is visiting the Giants today. GM Jerry Reese talked about the need for depth there even after drafting Eli Apple.
Other than Wade, is there anything on the back end of that unit worth keeping? Hall, DRC and Jenkins can help mentor Apple - hopefully help him learn the craft and become a stud.
and our 3 corners stay healthy, our first round pick will barely contribute this year. Awesome.
Where did you pick that from?
Same reaction. Why wouldn't we want depth? We need to be atleast 4 deep with the 4th being serviceable, probably a 5th. Apple is going to play a ton this year regardless of who we sign.
"Leon Hall is still a very technically sound player with a good football IQ. He's been reduced to a nickel CB, but that role still sees about 60 percent of the total snaps, and he's still one of the best nickel corners in the league. He's physical, presses well and offenses should never throw wide receiver screens in his direction. Hall is still one of the best tackling corners in the NFL today. Hall has also rotated into safety for some packages and has practiced there in training camp. I think he could extend his career a few years as a safety and nickel CB."
You could be right. Still think for the right price they'd love to add him. If Hall signs, he is no lock to be on the opening roster, esp. if his back starts acting up or he's still a bit away from regaining his form..Didn't you hear that the Powers interview went very well?
Even if there is no injuries the 4th CB sees the field a lot. He will have plenty of contribution this year.
JPinstripes - Leon Hall is WAY better then Jerraud Powers. It's not even close. PFF agrees with me. Hall was their 14th rated CB last year. Powers was their 95th rated CB.
I've always thought Hall was a good corner. Even if things don't pan out with Apple right away, and DRC or Jenkins goes down, this would be an NFL caliber player who could step in and start if necessary. I believe that even with drafting Apple, having a third veteran corner is important for the Giants.
I like our cbs as is. I want Apple to get as much experience
He brings a ton of versatilit, something we know NYG like.
He's still one of the best nickel corners in the league, and yes, he's a better player than Powers. He's very good playing the ball in the air, can play any CB spot on the field and can even contribute at FS and on specials.
you're saying you'd rather throw a rookie into the fire and cost the team with the inevitable rookie mistakes rather than let him learn first and get gradually increasing snaps?
Rookies rarely make an impact. they can give significant contributions, and signing a decent vet (I have no opinion whether Hall is one) will not impede Apple from making a good contribution.
Hall is an excellent slot corner. I really like what the Giants are doing with the secondary. I hope we get better coverage from our backers this year.

Shit, I'm getting old..It just dawned on me this very moment that the reason you do a bunch of commenting on the cap and financials is because your handle is fKAP..Sheesh..
NYG get torched because of a lack of depth at CB. Whether or not he plays the #3 or #4 role...it would be a valuable signing that would make a significant impact on NYGs 2016 season. Have the money? Do it.
There may be some extra medical screening that is needed with him.
is one of the great nickel corners in the league. So if he starts in the nickel and Jenkins/DRC start, that means Apple has too watch. I have no problem signing guys for depth, but I'd like to see a guy drafted 10 play immediately.
the history and likelihood of more than one cornerback getting injured, I think adding proven veteran depth at the position is a sound move for insurance purposes.

Maybe they want a vet safety to provide some leadership/competition and backup the slot in a pinch.
Yes, sounds serious. Not sure when he would be ready to play or what version of Hall you would be getting.
When asked about Hall's free agency, Lapham revealed that Hall underwent back surgery this offseason, which explains why there's been little-to-no market for his services.
"'Leon Hall obviously is not the player physically he (once) was,' Lapham said. 'He's had back surgery. He had it right after the season. He really stepped it up and played (this past season). He was getting epidurals to play with the back problem that he had, and he's had the disc surgery, and he's gotta rehabilitate from that.'
Lapham later went on to say he wouldn't be surprised if Hall retires this offseason, or if the Bengals ultimately end up re-signing him. Whatever happens, this revelation shows just how much of a warrior Hall has been for the Bengals and how much he's given them, even if it wasn't always great.
That was evident this past season when Hall struggled at times, but now knowing what he was going through just to play, it really should just make Bengals fans more endearing to him instead of slamming him as much as they did last season." Link - ( New Window )
RE: I think it's adorable that any of you could even say the words
Pugh and Richburg looked good rookie years only because of what we had seen previously. Both were so good that they changed positions after that. Flowers is a wash because of his injuries. All three were "pretty good... for a rookie". I'd have much rather have had a solid vet filling the role for a year.
Collins started, but there was a lot of negativity about his learning curve/play.
Apple (if he's as billed) will get plenty of playing time with or without a vet signing.
its not about getting depth. Its about Apple now. If he is drafted with the 10th pick, he needs to be on the field. Using him in the nickel this year then moving him out wide next year is fine. I dont want this kid sitting with being using a high pick on him.

If Eric is right about Hall being a great nickel corner - Apple's reps will be severely limited this year. I am not sure this is a good thing.
Question is, does he have anything left in the tank? And, would he be willing to be the 4th CB and or move to FS.

DRC, Janoris, Hall, Apple, Bennett Jackson, Landon Collins, Darian Thompson, Nat Behre. That's a lot of talent.
Where did you pick that from?
Since when do our corners stay healthy? We're usually signing CBs off the street by week 8.

You know that's not happening..Apple will get starter-like reps
Dammit SwirlingEddie, you beat me by seconds!!!!

My exact thought

Would rather sigh a tackle or guard even it they are backups.

Makes a lot of sense.

Ummm... OBJ, Flowers, Pugh, Richburg, Collins, etc....

In any event, depth is good.

Anyone wanting the giants to go into a season with their plans based on nobody getting hurt is beyond me.
he's a rarity.
