Veteran CB Leon Hall is visiting the Giants today. GM Jerry Reese talked about the need for depth there even after drafting Eli Apple.
in this league and so adding a guy like Hall would just make our depth that much more solid in the secondary. It's a no-brainer, however, as someone else mentioned, hopefully he passes a physical. If he is signed, it would push Wade or Bennett to 5th CB IMO.
you're getting really old. fkap stands for Formerly Known As Pete - a play on the 'symbol formerly known as Prince' which was current at the time. Changed my handle when I stupidly signed up as Pete (actually my name) when this place was Pete's Corner.
like a medical check only. I’d be surprised if they sign him. Assuming he’s healthy, it would be a good signing, but several teams already passed on him, at least for now. I assume they did so for medical reasons. The visits though give teams a chance to do their own medical assessment, and determine if he’s someone they might be interested in at some point in the future.
I want to see Apple play this year. If our nickel set consists of DRC/Jenkins/Hall - we will be just fine in the secondary. But I dont know if thats the best thing for our rookie.

You actually had to explain that? I remember very well what it really stands for. I was attempting a funny with the CAP and KAP, nothing more..:)
Pugh and Richburg looked good rookie years only because of what we had seen previously. Both were so good that they changed positions after that. Flowers is a wash because of his injuries. All three were "pretty good... for a rookie". I'd have much rather have had a solid vet filling the role for a year.
Collins started, but there was a lot of negativity about his learning curve/play.
Apple (if he's as billed) will get plenty of playing time with or without a vet signing.
Richburg was drafted as a Center. He started out at Guard because he was needed there and because he needed to get some seasoning and gain strength. He's now the Center, and a damned good one. He's not at all a good example for you to use.
and our 3 corners stay healthy, our first round pick will barely contribute this year. Awesome.
Glad to hear you've become a big fan of our rookie first-round pick. Big change from Thursday night:

Can't get behind this pick.
Hopefully, no WRs will be able to get behind him, either.
As for Hall, if he's healthy, then sign him. You can never have enough pass-defenders.
I am and still not a fan of the pick, as I feel we could have upgraded in other areas. I feel like we had more pressing needs. But now that he is on the team, I want to see him play. We had a lot of need and drafting a player at 10 to sit is not ideal. I am very curious to see how this pans out.
its not about getting depth. Its about Apple now. If he is drafted with the 10th pick, he needs to be on the field. Using him in the nickel this year then moving him out wide next year is fine. I dont want this kid sitting with being using a high pick on him.
I agree with this to a point, but if you look at last year's snap counts (when I realize Prince missed a few games), 5 of the top 10 snap counts on the tea were CB's and 2 more wee safeties. so 7 of the top 10 most snap counts on the team were DB's.
plenty of snaps to go around and it assumes the Giants are healthy.
basically it would be swapping out Trevin Wade and Jayron Hosley for Apple and Hall.
I do wonder if maybe they'd move DRC to free safety. Worked for the Pats with McCourty - though he had ball recognition issues.

It works if there is an injury. If there isnt, snaps are going to be limited. Now if DRC/Hall get reps at FS, then things changed. I am not expecting Apple to be a star immediately, but I think he needs to get as many reps as possible.
because he would be an excellent addition. A CB depth chart of DRC, Jenkins, Apple, Hall, and Deayon/Wade is the deepest the team has had in a really long time.
if he's healthy. You always need CB depth. But I'm hoping they're able to add someone else there, whether it's Hall, Powers or whoever. They still need help there.
This seems like it will happen assuming Hall checks out ok physically. Reese wants a ton of depth at the corner position because it is a passing league.
My question is, why doesn't he put the same emphasis on pass rushers? Right now we only have 2 quality rushers and a big question mark in OO. Kennard is a solid pass rushing LB but you would think he would want to add depth there.
thank you for agreeing with me regarding Richburg. you said it yourself: he needed seasoning and played guard out of necessity.
the important takeaway is that most rookies need seasoning. there are very few OBJ's who come in and are first year stars. That's why it wouldn't automatically be a bad thing to have a vet CB and let Apple learn and earn playing time rather than starting out of necessity. The 3rd CB is still basically a starter in terms of snaps.

But reading inside the lines of what Eric has been hearing is that it will be DRC's last season here. Therefore, Apple would expect to be a starter in 2017, and the more reps he gets this year, the better.
Reese put a ton of emphasis on pass rushers. OV and JJP got paid a ton. Plus Owa will have the most reps he has seen this season. Moore was in the mix too but he ended up being a dope.
I think the plan is for Hall to be a CB/S hybrid. I can see the Giants using a lot of dime packages with just Robinson or Kennard as the lone LB, DRC, Jenkins, Apple at CB with Collins close to the LOS with Hall and Thompson as the safeties.

Nope, not agreeing at all. Re-check your premises.
is one of the great nickel corners in the league. So if he starts in the nickel and Jenkins/DRC start, that means Apple has too watch. I have no problem signing guys for depth, but I'd like to see a guy drafted 10 play immediately.
He might have longer more productive career for the Giants if they bring him along slowly. Isn't he like 20 years old? So what he doesn't start behind a healthy DB crew day 1 - that would be a nice problem to have. He'll play when he is ready with a healthy DB field not because he has to.
I think he will be ready a lot sooner then some people think. Remember! ... his Mom said he was "the Eli Manning of CBs".
NYG get torched because of a lack of depth at CB. Whether or not he plays the #3 or #4 role...it would be a valuable signing that would make a significant impact on NYGs 2016 season. Have the money? Do it.
There may be some extra medical screening that is needed with him.
This would be very smart because CBs learning curves are usually longer coupled by the fact that Apple isn't as polished coming out either.
They probably knew this would be the route they'd go if they were to pick him over Hargreaves (the more finished product but lesser upside).
If DRC continues his play at the level of last year, he's going nowhere, imo..He's still one of the best and if thst continues you work out a revised contract if necessary..We have and will have enough dollars to do so if we care to unlike other years and other players when we were up against the cap..

Did you miss the amount of money we spent on OV and JPP? Those aren't pass rushers?

Agreed I know there reports that something happened with DRC that lead to speculation that this might be his last season with the team but I hope those reports are false. Unless there is a dramatic fall off in performance DRC is a must keep IMO. He is the best pure cover corner on the roster. Hopefully he doesn't suffer several small nagging injuries like he did last season because this defensive backfield could be very good especially if Hall is added and Thompson earns the starting FS job.

Checking in on an old corner with a bad back has nothing to do what they expect from Apple and everything to do with the fact that you need guys that can play. Maybe the team is tired of having to get major snaps from trash DBs.
My understanding on Leon Hall is that he's visited several teams. Medical is the issue, especially his back.
DRC had 889 snaps, Prince had 765, Hosley had 528, Wade had 529 & Mcbride had 342.
DRC and L.Hall are over 30.....he will play plenty under guidance!!! perfect rotation to keep people fresh.
well that puts a kabosh on this

Hall would be a great mentor for Apple. Think Sam Madison here.
My exact thought
then what is DRC? He's been around too.

In many ways this is much worse than a guy who get injured, and is day-to-day in his rehab.

Why would there be any complaints

Comment was an explanation of why teams will exercise extreme caution in signing him.

Question is, does he have anything left in the tank? And, would he be willing to be the 4th CB and or move to FS.
That shitty organization has 15 more wins and four more playoff appearances than our team does over the past four seasons.
