Not a bad take, I thought.
When the Giants decided to use the No. 10 overall draft choice on a cornerback, after signing Janoris Jenkins to a mega-contract to play with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, critics immediately wondered why a team might use a premium pick for a rotational player. However, under Spagnuolo, the nickel defense is essentially the Giants’ base.
People like to get caught up in terms like starter and reserve, but the NFL is becoming a league of sub packages. And the 4-2-5 nickel package, featuring five defensive backs, is the staple sub package of Spagnuolo’s defense.
In 2015, the Giants played multiple games with a nickel package that featured Trevin Wade, Jayron Hosley, Craig Dahl and Brandon Meriweather as four of the five defensive backs. Take a second to look at those names again, consider how much of a disadvantage a defense is at with all four on the field at once, and regroup. Because going forward, the Giants have flipped the script.
Apple will be one component to a new-look nickel package that could feature up to three new faces.
Kennard obviously is one of the 2 as long as he's healthy (lol), leaving space for whoever shows out in camp.

I believe Keenan Robinson is supposed to be a quality cover LB when healthy.

That's 2 "when healthys" already. Don't count on it.
But Floyd and kennard in a 4-2-5 would have been nice. floyd can cover well down field and i think thats why they were okay with a lighter LBer. When i was at college we had a very successfull defense that prettyy much was a base 4-2-5 our LBers werent heavier than 225.
That being said I am VERY excited for our draft. i LOVE the idea of Jenkins, DRC, Apple, Collins and thompson being our 5 DBs those names over what we have had in the past is a HUGE upgrade and that alone could have given us an extra win or two last season. add that we upgraded the DL with snacks and vernon, throw in Goodson who will be an upgrade at LBer for us and youre talking about a significantly better defense from a year ago
But that says nothing much about Apple. On the face of things, he seems best suited to being an outside corner and he's got a lot to learn. Asking him to be the slot corner while also being prepared to shift outside if anything happens to DRC or Jenkins might be asking too much.
I guess we'll find out.
Otherwise if Apple is expected to be effective so quickly then why are the Giants looking at Leon Hall? I take this article with a grain of salt. Apple will develop but he is very young and inexperienced for that matter. Flowers struggled last year at times and so will Apple.

No particular order -
Percy Harvin - 5'11", (4.41)
Randall Cobb - 5'10", (4,46)
Wes Welker - 5'9", (4.65)
Victor Cruz - 6" (4.47)
Danny Amendola - 5'11" , (4.58)
What do these guys have in common ? They're "football short" and fast, but MORE importantly, they can all "turn on a dime" and they routinely turn tall rangy CBs into pretzels.
Rambo, that's the answer to your CB Leon Hall (5'11, 4.39) question.
DRC is NOT coming inside after his nightmare in Philly and I sure Janoris Jenkins will not be a happy camper. So what to do ? - Wade, he's a JAG.
Bottom line, I agree, Apple will play real quick ,and Jenkins (5'10",4.46) will have to go inside (consoled by his mega-buck contract)
I'm more concerned with Apple getting exploited on the outside as a rookie.

even with Apple, that makes two corners you trust to start, a rookie, and Trevin Wade. In other words, that's not enough.
Hall is on the back end of his career but he could probably help a team. Certainly help a team that loses cornerbacks by the handful to injuries.
But the size of these guy's egos is incalculable.
As Dave Te told us, Hargreaves was the safer choice (and an outstanding slot CB), but the die is cast, they wanted the better player, long-term - Apple.
Hammer is 1000 %right - Apple will make an immediate impact (positive or negative).
He'll see the field early & often.
