they are probably just going to work out a long term deal instead of having him one year under last year of rookie contract and then losing him to free agency.
I would doubt they have any interest in trading him
year is up, maybe.
Think about it though - if the Jags are contemplating letting Joekel become a FA after next season, would the Giants want him?
Giants already took the option on Pugh, BTW.
If you decline the 5th year option, the player becomes a free agent. The option year is not, I believe, tied to the franchise tag numbers. It is a specific amount contained in the rookies contract.
when Beachum is healthy. He has been a huge disappointment. He would be worth a look on a short term deal if the price was right. Perhaps Solari can get something out of him. He isn't a free agent until next year so this is his big chance to have a breakout year and make a fortune next year if he plays well.
There's a difference in option year salary depending where in the first round a player is drafted. The fifth year salary for the top 10 picks is the transition tender (average of the 10 highest salaries) for a player's position in fourth year of his contract. With players selected outside of the top 10 (picks 11-32), the fifth-year salary is the average of the third through twenty-fifth highest salaries at a player's position. The chart below contains the fifth year or option year salaries for 2012 first round picks. Link - ( New Window )
They're not working out a long term deal. If they do make a long term deal, it will be with his replacement, Kelvin Beachum.
Joeckel lost his starting job.

He had trouble from the get go in handling speed rushers and if I remember correctly he's had some knee issues. Never really panned out!
Pugh was a good pick. A better pick would've been Terron Armstead. But I never was a big critic of the Pugh pick. I'm glad he's working out, even if it is at OG. Getting a reliable, good guard late in the first is a lot better than what a lot of teams do, particularly in that 2013 draft, which was mostly a dumpster fire.
Up the option guarantees the money. Joeckel has been bad, real bad. Didn't they bring a vet in to replace him this off season? Cant remember who. Anyway, he has also had injuries. Picking up his option means he is guaranteed that money and they dont want to Guarantee himt that money with so many unknowns. If he improves, they can work out a long term deal.

No, it's only guaranteed for injury (if the player suffers an injury and cannot play in 2017 during the 2016 season the contract becomes guaranteed). it does not become fully guaranteed until the first day of the 2017 NFL season (this year it was March 8) up until that time the player can be cut for performance and become a free agent.
He's a competitive and Versatile OL piece. He's a widget. He's certainly not a Top OL player. As the 19th player in the Draft????..... I guess the big question would be whether you could have drafted similar production in rds 3/4/5....he was able to play immediately...and he'll get better.... but he's not ever going to be a top tier guy.
and one that the Giants should retain longer term if he can remain concussion free this season.
However the complaints about him are legitimate.
19 isn't too early to pick a guard per se, but the Giants drafted him to play OT and in terms of salary cap and expenditures and probably importance to protecting your QB investment, OT are more valuable.
if the Giants knew Pugh would wind up at G would they still have taken him with the 19th pick is the question you need answered.
My gut says no, but that's semantics, he's a good player and fits in nicely with the line.
In baseball terminology it would be like moving a shortstop prospect to second base or a catcher to 1B. they lose some value with the position move that doesn't mean they aren't a good player or have value.

he is still under contract for this year
Of course, you run the risk that some other team may sign your player.

Also I meant to write look at the OL players selected before him
Maybe he turns it around by so far it isn't good.
