NFT: Best movies you've seen lately

mattlawson : 5/3/2016 8:23 pm
Just saw The Revenant with Leo Dicaprio over the weekend. What a great film... I'm still thinking about it. It's dark, very emotionally gripping, tons of action, stunning photography. Overall the best film ive seen in quite some time. I'd recommend it to those that also like There Will Be Blood type movies.

Any other recs?

Hateful 8 was first Tarantino movie I liked since Reservoir Dogs.

You didn't like true romance or pulp fiction? I didn't see Django unchained or Hateful Eight yet and I didn't love Inglorious Basterds but True Romance was great and Pulp Fiction though overhyped was a very good movie too.

I actually even liked Jackie Brown.

True Romance actually wasn't directed by Tarantino and is not considered one of his 8 movies.

Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill 1, Kill Bill 2, Inglorious Bastards, Django Unchained, Hateful 8.

Just watched "Me and Earl and the Dying Girl" which if you like films like Juno or Dope (which was awesome) or Perk of Being a Wallflower, you'll like this.

I like all the movies listed here. I would recommend them to most everyone, especially Dope.
I am still in awe

about how Innaratu and Lubezki filmed the Revenant. It almost made the story take a backseat. Just wanted the movie to keep going and going.
Also the Hateful 8

in 70mm was awesome.
I watched Interstellar a couple weeks ago.

I thought it was pretty lousy for most of it, and then the ending was simply craptacular.

I want those 9 hours of my life back. I'm done with Nolan and his severely overrated films.
loved Interstellar

I still watch it in 10/15 minute chunks every time its on HBO. Miller's direction and filming is simply the gold standard for action movies.

Looking back on it, 2015 was the year of directing/ cinematography for me. The Revenant, Fury Road, Sicario, and the Hateful 8 are all beautiful looking films.

Took my kids and expected very little. It was well done and very enjoyable. Much darker than the original cartoon version.

By Richard Lanklear. Great film, especially if you enjoyed "Dazed and Confused." It's the same director, but with the 80s theme this time around.
Is this a continuation of dazed or is it new characters? Is Mitch Kramer in it as one the college baseball players ? It was not playing anywhere near me so I have to wait for the blu ray to come out
I recently watched Creed
Old Dirty : 5/4/2016 12:42 pm : link
and it was way better than I thought it would be. Was never a huge fan of the Rocky movies.

Another one I caught on TV was The 100 ft Journey. It is a story of an Indian family moving in and opening a restaurant across the street from a fancy, French restaurant. I enjoyed the heck out of it.
I loved The Revenant and Sicario

It's not a continuation of the story, nor is Mitch Kramer in it. It was a great movie about the 80's, especially if you liked Dazed and Confused.

Side note, I'm wth those that say Sicario was a good movie. Benicio Del Toro killed it in that role.

I was very "meh" with the Martian. Love Ridley Scott but he took no changes in making this movie. I enjoyed it, but wasn't on the edge of my seat at any point in the movie.

Cuaron and Nolan crushed the filming of Gravity and Interstellar and I applaud their swinging for the fences. Polarizing films for sure, especially Gravity, but I respect not doing the hollywood song and dance.

I won't go near Gravity because I've heard too much negativity from people whose opinion I value.

I read The Martian and loved it. Haven't watched it yet, but I have a DVD of it waiting at home for some night, hopefully soon. I don't expect to like it as much as the book, but I hope it's a fun watch anyway.

Yeah I bought Gravity on blue ray thinking it would be the kind of movie I would like to own. What a swing and miss that was.
If you look at..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/4/2016 2:11 pm : link
The Martian as a "fun watch" that's exactly what it is. Book is better, but the movie was done in the spirit that I think works fine.
Gravity needs to be seen in threaters
UConn4523 : 5/4/2016 2:15 pm : link
especially iMax. Its not a movie you go home and watch on a 42" screen. The technicalities that Cuaron pulled off was awesome but there wasn't a story. So if you appreciate the filming aspect you might like it. If you want a good story you will hate it.

I saw Green Room over the weekend
jimfinn81 : 5/4/2016 4:23 pm : link
One of the most suspenseful things I've seen in a while. I was really on the edge of my seat throughout. Was also one of the most brutally violent things I've seen in some time.

It's from the director of Blue Ruin, which I haven't seen (came off of Netflix right before I was going to watch it) but had always heard good things. It was my favorite thing I've seen in 2016 and now I have to check out Blue Ruin.
Blue Ruin is very good.

I agree. I couldn't even finish it as I fell asleep halfway through. Not a bad movie by any stretch but it just bored me. And I actually didn't mind the last rocky film.

Sicaro was good too. Saw it mentioned...

I tried "witch" last night and I turned it off. Wasn't in the mood to watch that kind of a movie and the first few minutes kinda freaked me out lol... Some weird quivering pale person-- no thanks!

So much wrong with that movie. First off can they speak in a language that we can actually understand? And second, what the fuck happened? Forget the enigmatic ending... The whole movie made zero fucking sense! What the fuck was up with some of the imagery showing old wrinkled witches one scene and then a hot soul sucking witch the next? What. The. Fuck. Goats. A fucking bunny rabbit.

Might be th worst movie I ever sat thorough. It literally made no sense whatsoever.

I agree with everything you said. Worst movie I've ever seen, and that's saying something. You just kept waiting for everything to tie and come together. But it never did. Awful. The entire theater felt like storming the counter and demanding our money back as we were leaving.

You were dead on about the speaking issues. Everyone spoke with such a dialect that is was nearly impossible to understand half the time. I spent half the movie trying to figure out what was just said. There were tons of younger teenagers at the movie and I can imagine how they must have felt trying to figure that crap out. Garbage.

There's something about the Martian that very pleasantly surprised me. I don't want to spoil it, so I guess I can just say that movies typically handle its type of ending much worse than it did.
Another vote for Jungle Book.

The kid playing Mowgli is just OK, but the rest of the cast is great and the effects are terrific. Highly recommended for kids 7-13 or so. BTW, if you're a fan of early Bond films, stay through the second song of the closing credits (ScarJo purring "Trust in Me"), which looks like a Favreau homage to Maurice Binder's work, circa You Only Live Twice.
