Annie Apple: No to Eli sporting diamonds and Rolex at draft

“Eli was offered Rolex watches and diamonds to wear on draft day,” Annie Apple wrote. “I told him, ‘Dude, you’re an unemployed college dropout. You will not be on TV with a Rolex.’ So we decided if he needed to know what time it was, he could just look at his phone. I bought him a portable charger.”

Didn't see posted, about Annie writing first person about Eli Apple's draft journey.

It is a great line. But, maybe more of their parents, friends, etc. need to refer to them like that, which is technically true. Too many simply see a gravy train by hanging on and telling them to enter the draft.

Yeah I read she already had a large following long before the draft. She didn't just start in order to piggyback on his NFL success.
IMO Mrs. Apple should have her own advise column.
idinkido : 5/4/2016 6:26 pm : link
She gives sound advice and acts like a Mom who wants to be more "mom" than friend to her son. Eli is a good person and we got to remember we are like our parents whether we want to be or not.
She started tweeting 2009 when Eli was 13
steve in ky : 5/4/2016 6:29 pm : link

Safe to say she didn't take to it seeking out celebrity because of Eli's success.

But it is starting to get to the point where its getting a bit too much with regards to her "cute tweets".

It is inadvertently going to create a spotlight on her son and a possible distraction. She needs to back off a bit at this point and let Eli develop without the added scrutiny

So you have a woman who is a wife and mother who has been tweeting since her son Eli was thirteen years old and apparently has a following in her own right has to stop because her son got drafted?

She seems like a great mom and I doubt Eli would want to shut down his mother in doing something she obviously has a passion for. I bet he is proud that more people are becoming aware of her abilities, humor, and wisdom.

She's been on Social Media prior to anyone knowing about her son. She been a blogger covering various topics from lifestyles, relationships, to sports and politics. So like it or not, I suspect will see more articles about her son's experiences as a professional athlete. It fits with the type of stories she writes about. Link to her website.

WHY BEING GOOD AT FOOTBALL DOESN’T MAKE ELI APPLE SPECIAL TO ME

Millions of readers who follow my blog religiously have asked, “Why don’t you blog about your son who plays football for Ohio State.” Okay, it’s more like 23 faithful readers of my blog. But if I had a million readers, I’m sure one or two would ask that. I do blog indirectly about my kids, especially when I’m discussing the joys and tortures of motherhood.

My husband and I are the proud parents of four very different kids: three sons, ages 24, 21 and Eli is 19. We have a daughter (a future litigator) who is almost 14. Our kids are all gifted and kind people. None of them are perfect and are still growing into the men and woman God has equipped and gifted them to be. But no, I haven’t dedicated a full blog post to our 19 year old son, Eli Apple, starting cornerback for the Ohio State.

Where did anyone tell her that she needs to stop? She can do whatever she damn pleases. I also have the right to think it's lame.

Example #2:

You have every right to have a meltdown on draft day over the size and definition of a grown man's, and thereby project a career trajectory based on said calves.

And I reserve the right to think you're a fucking halfwit.

You're acting like every tweet is about her son
David in LA : 5/5/2016 12:37 am : link
what specific kind of distraction are you looking for? There hasn't been any incidents like that at Ohio St, and that's one of the most prominent college programs around. I will guarantee she won't tweet about lack of playing time, game plan, or throw a teammate under the bus. Outside of those 3 items, what would be a 'distraction' in your book? A vocal, and supportive mother! Oh no! How will the locker room survive?
That's cool.
Dave in Hoboken : 5/5/2016 12:44 am : link
And as long as his mom isn't tweeting negative stuff about the coaching staff ('why did they call that play?!' type of stuff), or about her sons' playing time, or anything negative from an on field aspect about the players or coaches, her tweeting shouldn't be a problem. But if she does start that, which I doubt she will, then yeah, that could be an issue. But I doubt she does that. She seems smarter than that.

Come on Dave, your doing that embellishment deal here. I never once said "every tweet is about her son". What I have stated is that while she is a neat side story and refreshing with her take about things, this is about her son not her.

Maybe I jumped the gun a bit about it getting a bit silly hearing about her tweets, but the main jist here is that we have heard more about her then the kid we drafted over the last few days. I want to hear from Eli himself, i want to hear his take on things, his views on what he brings to the team and where his head is at. She is a great mom and its pretty cool she has developed a following of her own, but at some point this will be a distraction if it continues. I hope it becomes an interesting sidebar to Eli Apple himself and not a factor in everything we hear about him.

As I said we will see and I will be either be saying "Dammit Dave you were correct", or vice versa okay?

is that she has her own twitter account and those that like her can follow her and those that don't, don't. And BBI as a whole need not follow her (nor need the NYPost, etc) because those who care are already in the know. So, no real need to re-post every missive with breathless gasps and doe eyes. I think what Montana and I are getting at, is that it isn't about the content of her tweets.

She didn't say anything wrong. Nor anything groundbreaking. I think most of have at some point questioned, and giggled in front of our television sets during draft day at some of these gaudy, blinged-out cartoon characters. Particularly considering the fact that they haven't signed a pro contract yet.

But we've just drafted a first round CB in the top 10 of the NFL draft and we've had more threads linking to comments from the kid's mother than from whom we drafted. I think it's more of a criticism of posters here than the woman herself.
look, she was just being cautious

and I'm sure she's smart enough to know there are certain things to not talk about. If she knows not to knock the coaches, or teammates, I don't really foresee her being a distraction or causing any sort of rift in the locker room. I just don't see how she has been 'making it about her' at all in any of her recent tweets.
