NFT: Knicks Chat: Melo to LA?

DanMetroMan : 5/5/2016 10:44 am
Melo to the Lakers? Colin Cowherd claims the Lakers plan on trading their first rounder (even if they win the lottery) because they are tired of rebuilding and want to trade for a superstar. If the Lakers have dreams of signing Durant (he reportedly wanted to play with the Lakers until Kobe decided to retire)or even Lebron then dealing the pick in exchange for Melo. Supposedly part of the sales pitch to Walton was the fact they would be big game hunting and add stars. The guy in Metro suggested Russell and the pick for Melo. Yes please.

I think is a PG in the Triangle.

just the #1 pick and a contract dump with 1 year left on the deal. Russell and the #1 pick is a no brainer. Porzingis, Russell, and Simmons.Ingram would be a great future trio.

Add in grant you might have 4 of your future starting 5, if herangomez pans out you could have your future starting 5 for the next 10 years

Grant Russell Ingram/Simmons kp willy

Grant-Russell backcourt would be delightful. Although I wonder what the perception of Russell is around the league at this point.

one that thinks the Lakers would never do that? Their recent #2 pick AND their lottery pick for Melo?

There isn't a real PG in the Triangle though. But both could be used to initiate the offense.

How is Russell's penetrating ability (pause)?

No, you're not. People are just endlessly optimistic and lopsided in their trades . You're not getting more for Carmelo Anthony at 31 than you paid for Carmelo Anthony at 26.

Russell is a triangle PG for exactly that reason. Phil has always likes bigger guys who can shoot at PG. The triangle PG usually sends the ball into the post and then does a sharp cut to the corner 3, which is something Russell excels at. He's a great shooter (and a huge douchebag).

His strength isn't getting to the rim, since he isn't an explosive athlete or all that strong.

I agree, it wouldn't be the pick AND Russell, unless the deal expands to include other assets going both ways.
The trade makes no sense for the Lakers
arniefez : 5/5/2016 11:24 am : link
but someone paid 2 billion for the Clippers so anything can happen if someone wants it badly enough. It doesn't need to make sense it just needs one confused desperate team and the Lakers may be that team. Still it's highly unlikely.
Just heard
JayBinQueens : 5/5/2016 11:24 am : link
on an update on Cowherd's show that the Lakers are pursuing Paul George (though he followed it with that it's not likely to happen)

no. About 5 people said this exact thing prior to your post.
What if Lakers just don't want Russell in the locker room anymore
nygiants16 : 5/5/2016 11:28 am : link
And would rather go with clarkson?

I doubt this trade would ever happen but there are some reasons for Lakers to do this...

Lakers have always been star chasers, they may feel its better to build by trying to lure stars in free agency
I'm with Jon - the triangle is pretty much perfect for Russell

And if you play him next to grant he doesn't have to worry about having to get in the lane or trying to be a slasher, he can sit back and do what he does best move the ball and shoot open jumpers
any team that makes a trade
hitdog42 : 5/5/2016 11:34 am : link
like Russell and a top 2 pick this year, for the right to pay melo on the downside--- deserves failure.
it certainly sounds unlikely
Greg from LI : 5/5/2016 11:36 am : link
But Jim Buss is both dimwitted and desperate. The clock is ticking, and it won't be long before Jeannie pushes him aside unless he shows results. Desperate men do foolish things.
It would be great if we could
Phil in LA : 5/5/2016 11:36 am : link
trade both Melo and Lopez.

Why would you trade Lopez? He is signed for 3 more years on a cap friendly deal and only 28

The only way I could see it happening is if they got word from Durant's camp that he wants to play with melo and would come to LA to do it

let's be real. Is this team even going to be running the triangle in 2-3 years?
Who knows?
Greg from LI : 5/5/2016 11:43 am : link
They're running it now, though. If 2-3 years is your basis for player acquisition, how can you ever evaluate anyone on that basis?
if Melo is traded
Enzo : 5/5/2016 11:45 am : link
it makes a lot of sense to listen to offers for Lopez. Nobody is saying to give him away but looking to sell high on him is simply good business if you're doing a legit rebuild.

Phil is in Montana somewhere smoking pot and listening to bob Marley, he won't even know Vogel is fired until a month from now when he comes back to reality

Haha this is probably true
you might get Russell OR the pick
djm : 5/5/2016 12:08 pm : link
for Melo. You aren't getting both for Melo.
They aren't trading Russell or their pick
Rflairr : 5/5/2016 1:16 pm : link
For an old Melo. They might trade their pick. But it's likely to be for a restricted FA like Harrison Barnes if they strike out with Durant.
The reason I'd trade Lopez
Phil in LA : 5/5/2016 1:47 pm : link
Is he has trade value, and we need younger pieces for the multi-year mission about to start.
Except Porzingas, everyone and anyone on the current roster
Vanzetti : 5/5/2016 1:53 pm : link
is tradable
Come on, this would never happen
David in LA : 5/5/2016 2:34 pm : link
I don't want to give up the pick if we get the top 2 picks. If we give up the pick AND Russell, I will be fucking livid.
Frank
DanMetroMan : 5/5/2016 2:39 pm : link
Vogel is 250-181 career and that includes 38-44 last season minus his franchise player
Keep dreaming, guys.
GiantFilthy : 5/5/2016 2:40 pm : link
You all are right. DLO and the pick is a no brainer..... for the Knicks.
Good point
DanMetroMan : 5/5/2016 2:48 pm : link
from Keith Schlosser

"Another thing Vogel would have going for him in New York is his familiarity and appreciation for Brian Shaw, a Jackson disciple. The former Lakers guard and coach was Vogel's top assistant in Indiana from 2011-13, largely due to his ability to help Vogel incorporate some triangle nuances into the Pacers' system."
Apparently
Jon in NYC : 5/5/2016 2:49 pm : link
Shaw and Rambis are at odds for some reason. Wonder if that would be a roadblock

Why the hell would you trade a top 2 pick for Harrison Barnes just to over pay him? That would be horrible
Berman

claims that Shaw was Jackson's first choice after Kerr turned us down but the Nuggets wanted compensation. Sort of strange he's not being considered now (not that I'm eager for them to hire Shaw).
Lakers need to make a run at Whiteside and a perimeter guy

Maybe they have talked and it just has not been leaked?

Supposedly rambis and shaw do not like each other and do not get along anymore
NO WAY
GuzzaBlue : 5/5/2016 2:58 pm : link
they would give up their first AND Russell???!!!! For an aging Melo. I'd be surprised if they even would give the pick only. Unless I am way off, it just doesn't sound right. They probably want something more. I know Buss is horrible, but this would set back their franchise another 7 years.

Hire Vogel as HC; hire Shaw as his assistant coach and tell Rambis to go back to LA.

Russell and a top pick for Melo? Come on now. Either one of those two would be more than fair for Melo at his age. Both is pure insanity. I can't see why the Lakers would want Melo, though. He's the type of piece you get to try and put your team over the top. They'd need another big piece in place before going for a Melo type. He wouldn't help their team that much as it is unless they just want to be a treadmill team that hopefully puts butts in the seats.

Lakers SHOULDNT trade for Melo
Deej : 5/5/2016 3:25 pm : link
Whether they will and what they give up is a different question. Between the promise from Buss and the fact that Im sure ownership doesnt want to see a stupid fall off in revenues, I could see it. Justify it by saying that Lakers mystique will bring in a second big UFA in the next two summers, so long as there is one star here.

Deej : 5/5/2016 3:25 pm : link
Love to LA in a 3 way makes some more sense than Melo to LA. But Melo to LA makes sense on its own, given my last post.
Figure we acquire a draft pick or two....
