NFT: Knicks Chat: Melo to LA?

DanMetroMan : 5/5/2016 10:44 am
Melo to the Lakers? Colin Cowherd claims the Lakers plan on trading their first rounder (even if they win the lottery) because they are tired of rebuilding and want to trade for a superstar. If the Lakers have dreams of signing Durant (he reportedly wanted to play with the Lakers until Kobe decided to retire)or even Lebron then dealing the pick in exchange for Melo. Supposedly part of the sales pitch to Walton was the fact they would be big game hunting and add stars. The guy in Metro suggested Russell and the pick for Melo. Yes please.

Everyone here knows I have been on the keep melo side
nygiants16 : 5/5/2016 10:47 am : link
But if Lakers offer Russell and number 1 pick you do it in a second...

Let melo and Durant lose to warriors in playoffs
I'll take Ingram/Simmons and Russell for Melo in a heartbeat

.
If they can
Metnut : 5/5/2016 10:49 am : link
get Russel AND the pick, Knicks should IMO say yes without thinking twice. Keep Ramsay and tank in 2016. Then they'd have Zingas, Russel, Grant, 2016 top 3 pick and 2017 lottery pick. The team could be young and ready for a nice long window if they hit on the draft picks and would be flush with cap room as well.
I would be shocked if they would do this
steve in ky : 5/5/2016 10:50 am : link
Deliriously happy, but shocked.

I think this is likley to be BS.
so far sounds like Cowherd is just making that up
mfsd : 5/5/2016 10:51 am : link
but imagine if Jax could pull that off
You're probably right, Steve,
Ira : 5/5/2016 10:52 am : link
but let's dream for a while.
he's most likely not going to LA
Enzo : 5/5/2016 10:53 am : link
unless another vet star is there...and I would assume any talk of Russell and the pick is wishful thinking. Most likely it would be a choice of one or the other and then other smaller pieces coming back.
Let

Durant and Melo play together in LA. Maybe you include Lopez (and get a little bit more back from the Lakers) as The Knicks likely see it as a total rebuild 2-3 year situation if this were to happen anyway
stop stomping on my dreams!
Greg from LI : 5/5/2016 10:56 am : link

Jim Buss
bceagle05 : 5/5/2016 10:56 am : link
recently said something to the effect of, "We already have enough young players" - a clear indication he wants to deal the pick for a star player. If this possibility exists, I would hope the Knicks have kept an eye on the prospects this year. Supposedly Phil's in no rush to hire a coach because there are no pre-draft workouts to attend.

I'll basically take any one of those 3 for Melo. Maybe with a bit more coming back, but I wouldnt require Russell plus the top pick.
How about Melo to the Cavs
Deej : 5/5/2016 10:57 am : link
Love to LA, pick and Randle to NY?
Yea no way they'd do Russell
Stu11 : 5/5/2016 10:57 am : link
but maybe Clarkson and the pick? I'd do that if I were the Knicks in a heartbeat as well.
bc, the Lakers pick second
Greg from LI : 5/5/2016 10:59 am : link
If this happened, they'd be picking either Simmons or Ingram. Not much scouting necessary.
That is true.
bceagle05 : 5/5/2016 11:01 am : link
Funny thing is I haven't been all that impressed with Simmons, but if the Knicks land him I'll quickly talk myself into him being the next Lebron.
Frank Vogel FIRED
Joey from GlenCove : 5/5/2016 11:03 am : link
We need to bring him in ASAP.

He is a fantastic coach. Thin kit will be between him and Blatt :(
Not
DanMetroMan : 5/5/2016 11:03 am : link
Sure if this was just a rumor but I thought I read Buss said he would step down/give away his power if they don't turn it around quickly so while Russell and the pick might be too much to expect I don't think a Melo Lakers deal is that outlandish
Phil's on vacation
bceagle05 : 5/5/2016 11:03 am : link
so I hope Mills has Vogel's phone number.
I know Jeannie Buss
bceagle05 : 5/5/2016 11:05 am : link
had given Jim Buss a certain window, which I believe expires next season. So there's every incentive to win now. And Jim Buss and Kupchak want nothing to do with Phil being in their front office. Quite a situation over there in LA.
Russell
Jon in NYC : 5/5/2016 11:05 am : link
and the pick for Melo is a no brainer. I bet Melo would accept, too. Clean start for him.

Hire Vogel, draft Buddy, wreck shit.
I would accept
Jay on the Island : 5/5/2016 11:06 am : link
just the #1 pick and a contract dump with 1 year left on the deal. Russell and the #1 pick is a no brainer. Porzingis, Russell, and Simmons.Ingram would be a great future trio.

Add in grant you might have 4 of your future starting 5, if herangomez pans out you could have your future starting 5 for the next 10 years

Grant Russell Ingram/Simmons kp willy
Russell

Grant-Russell backcourt would be delightful. Although I wonder what the perception of Russell is around the league at this point.
Am I the only

There isn't a real PG in the Triangle though. But both could be used to initiate the offense.

How is Russell's penetrating ability (pause)?

No, you're not. People are just endlessly optimistic and lopsided in their trades . You're not getting more for Carmelo Anthony at 31 than you paid for Carmelo Anthony at 26.

Russell is a triangle PG for exactly that reason. Phil has always likes bigger guys who can shoot at PG. The triangle PG usually sends the ball into the post and then does a sharp cut to the corner 3, which is something Russell excels at. He's a great shooter (and a huge douchebag).

His strength isn't getting to the rim, since he isn't an explosive athlete or all that strong.

I agree, it wouldn't be the pick AND Russell, unless the deal expands to include other assets going both ways.
The trade makes no sense for the Lakers
arniefez : 5/5/2016 11:24 am : link
but someone paid 2 billion for the Clippers so anything can happen if someone wants it badly enough. It doesn't need to make sense it just needs one confused desperate team and the Lakers may be that team. Still it's highly unlikely.
Just heard
JayBinQueens : 5/5/2016 11:24 am : link
on an update on Cowherd's show that the Lakers are pursuing Paul George (though he followed it with that it's not likely to happen)

no. About 5 people said this exact thing prior to your post.
What if Lakers just don't want Russell in the locker room anymore
nygiants16 : 5/5/2016 11:28 am : link
And would rather go with clarkson?

I doubt this trade would ever happen but there are some reasons for Lakers to do this...

Lakers have always been star chasers, they may feel its better to build by trying to lure stars in free agency
I'm with Jon - the triangle is pretty much perfect for Russell

And if you play him next to grant he doesn't have to worry about having to get in the lane or trying to be a slasher, he can sit back and do what he does best move the ball and shoot open jumpers
any team that makes a trade
hitdog42 : 5/5/2016 11:34 am : link
like Russell and a top 2 pick this year, for the right to pay melo on the downside--- deserves failure.
it certainly sounds unlikely
Greg from LI : 5/5/2016 11:36 am : link
But Jim Buss is both dimwitted and desperate. The clock is ticking, and it won't be long before Jeannie pushes him aside unless he shows results. Desperate men do foolish things.
It would be great if we could
Phil in LA : 5/5/2016 11:36 am : link
trade both Melo and Lopez.

Why would you trade Lopez? He is signed for 3 more years on a cap friendly deal and only 28

The only way I could see it happening is if they got word from Durant's camp that he wants to play with melo and would come to LA to do it

let's be real. Is this team even going to be running the triangle in 2-3 years?
Who knows?
Greg from LI : 5/5/2016 11:43 am : link
They're running it now, though. If 2-3 years is your basis for player acquisition, how can you ever evaluate anyone on that basis?
if Melo is traded
Enzo : 5/5/2016 11:45 am : link
it makes a lot of sense to listen to offers for Lopez. Nobody is saying to give him away but looking to sell high on him is simply good business if you're doing a legit rebuild.

Phil is in Montana somewhere smoking pot and listening to bob Marley, he won't even know Vogel is fired until a month from now when he comes back to reality

you might get Russell OR the pick
djm : 5/5/2016 12:08 pm : link
for Melo. You aren't getting both for Melo.
They aren't trading Russell or their pick
Rflairr : 5/5/2016 1:16 pm : link
For an old Melo. They might trade their pick. But it's likely to be for a restricted FA like Harrison Barnes if they strike out with Durant.
The reason I'd trade Lopez
Phil in LA : 5/5/2016 1:47 pm : link
Is he has trade value, and we need younger pieces for the multi-year mission about to start.
