NFT: Manhattan restaurant recommendations requested

Pete in VA : 5/5/2016 12:25 pm
I'm coming to NYC in August. My wife and I are going to see Hamilton. We're staying on 55th near 5th Avenue, so we would like a place for a relatively early dinner (show is at 8:00) somewhere between there and Times Square.

We're both up for any cuisine, but I'd like to keep it in the "reasonable" range. Suggestions?
I like going to Toloache
yupbjac27 : 5/5/2016 12:30 pm : link
before broadway shows - its Mexican. There is also a Belgian place I like to go which is a bit more relaxed called BXL
I like Toloache on W 50th a lot, too...

There's also a good upscale Italian place called La Masseria on W 48th, although it is a bit on the pricey side, depending on what you order. And another good Italian on W 44th is Osteria al Doge. I went there with my Mom last week before seeing Blackbird. And Serafina on Broadway is dependable and you can manage to get out without breaking the bank.
Define Reasonable Price Range

In NYC, that means something very different than in other places. However, if you are a fan of classic Italian, try Il Tinello. They make everything fresh. IMHO, it is the best Italian in the area. If you want more something more hip, then go to Bar Americain, which is a Bobby Flay restaurant.
Was in NYC two weeks ago for a show at Carnegie Hall

P J Carney's on 7th was good pub food.

I'm not familiar with Manhattan prices, but assuming they are similar to DC, I would define $25-$30 entrees as "reasonable".
Brasserie Ruhlmann

.
Just looked at a couple of menus for prices

Brasserie Ruhlmann and Cafe American are in the ball park. $30 to $40ish for most entrees is fine.

Pergola Des Artistes. It is a French Country style restaurant that is reasonable (4 courses prix fixe is under $40). Food was very good...LARGE portions....and...

It is literally ADJACENT to the Richard Rodgers Theatre. 15 second walk from door to door. In fact, the owner (who was also our waiter) told us to avoid the long lines and come back to his restaurant and use his restroom and have a cocktail during the intermission and we did so easily within the time allotted (drank fast though!).

I could not recommend it more given its proximity to Hamilton, the value, the friendliness, and the good food. It is not "Haute Cuisine" so do not expect a Michelin 3* experience...this is just really good, authentic food at a very reasonable price and right next door to the theatre.
I am happy to answer any questions you have about Hamilton and/or...

Pergola. Also, I found some incredibly cheap bars for drinks before/after the show. Found one bar where $5 for a shot of Jamison, House Pint and a hot dog thrown in free with all beverages. Great joint.

Let me know if you have any questions.
Abover your preferred price range

but most of Midtown will be. BBI favorite Del Frisco's and American Cut are top notch steakhouses.

"Stimulus Package"

$5 for a pint, a shot of Jamison, and a ball park frank. Cannot beat it.

Other dive joint we loved was Jimmy's Corner. My wife had the "Jimmy's Famous Hurricane" and I had a pint. I think it was $8...LOL...two great places and both very a short walk from Richard Rodgers Theatre.
There's always this option ;-)

K Rico is only a block or two out of your way...

...and has a very nice pre-theater prix fixe, if you like Latin-accented steak.

Personally, I like a bit of a walk before curtain, especially if it's a nice evening. And once you're out of the heart of the Theater District/Restaurant Row, your early-evening business is much more appreciated.

My entire family convenes in the backroom of Joe's Shanghai for soup dumplings and dinner about 5 times a year -- and my oldest grandson chants about them in between visits - 56th St between 6th and 5th Ave

If you are willing to venture to NJ, the best soup dumplings I've had are at Petite Soo Chow in Cliffside Park, right over the GWB. They serve more authentic Chinese food, with a lot of dishes you won't find on most Chinese menus.
Thanks to all!

Great variety of suggestions. I'll read up on all of them. We're really looking forward to the show.
