NFT: MLB.coms top 30 International prospects

Jay on the Island : 5/5/2016 12:58 pm
Here is the top 30 international prospects according to MLB.com with the rumored destinations for some of them. As expected the Braves are expected to sign Maitan, Guiterrez(C), Severino (if), Soto (infield), Pena (infield), and Contreras (P). Maitan is the price of the IFA this year and he is being compared to Chipper Jones and Miguel Cabrera. He is currently a shortstop but is expected to be a 3B in the majors due to his size and strong arm.

50% shortstops. I wonder if that's how many of these international prospects start out and then get moved.

Yes I believe that is usually the case. They start out as a SS and if their range or arm strength is inadequate they move to 2nd, 3rd, or OF.

well generally even in the states the best athlete is put at SS in younger leagues. Obviously these kids are the cream of their crop and as they grow, fill out their frame they will be moved to other positions accordingly
I admittedly don't know a lot about these players, but I find it

weird that 15 and 16 year olds are drawing comps to established HOFers like Chipper and Miggy.

Their kids. That's a lot of projection.

Maitan has been compared to Cabrera since he was 14. I know it is crazy to compare such a young player to a potential hall of famed. Maitan is just so advanced for his age.
I guess, it's just crazy.

They are still going through puberty.

probably why so many bust.

the Mets big ticket guys haven't panned out - Rosario certainly looks good though.

This is the Mets largest bonus payouts before last year (and I don't want to turn this into a Mets thread, I'm sure other teams have similar bust rates.) Some of these guys are probably too young to call busts yet, but Urbina, F-Mart, Pena, Guerra, even Flores, relative to investment, did not pan out.

The Braves are expected to be the biggest spenders this year

The Padres, Nationals, and Cardinals are also expected to be among the biggest spenders.
Some of the lesser known

and paid prospects end up being the biggest stars. The Braves top prospect Ozzie Albies was signed for just a 350K bonus.

Agree, Jeurys Familia signed for 100k.

I dont really know how you can say Flores

didn't work out. For 700K, anybody that even comes close to making and performing in the majors is a huge HR IMO.

I prefer to separate it into classes now with Sandy being his own identity. Going back to the Omar days and pointing to guys like F-Mart doesn't mean too much to me. Its fine if others still want to do that though.
Also PJ that list

leaves out the two SS we signed last year over a million a piece.

Yeah, I said that was before last year's signing period.

holy shit, the point has nothing to do with Sandy or Omar.

it's about IFA's in general and signing 16 year old kids to big contracts (relatively speaking), all teams.

When Flores was signed for them top 5 probably in Mets history of an IFA bonus the vision for him was not a backup or platoon player (but there is still time for him).

I'm not going to debate on you minutia that has zero to do with the point of the thread.

You said, Flores, relative to investment did not work out. Not sure why you are talking about the premise of the thread. You made a comment. I disagreed. A 700K investment who makes it the majors and was a starting player on a WS team constitutes success IMO. Carry on.
Whatever you say chief

as usual the point sailed right over your head and you launched into Mets defense mode with sand in your vagina.

Wasn't even arguing you at all nor was I once upset about anything. Was just making a comment. Geez.
