Mykkele Thompson's chances?

chris r : 5/5/2016 1:30 pm
Any reason for optimism about this guy being the answer at FS? Basically a redshirted rookie season for him last year.

I was watching this highlight of Paul Perkins from 2014 and saw #2 from Texas running him down with ease and sure enough it was Thompson. Would be nice to have that kind of speed back there.

I'm amazed that he's back this early from an Achilles tear.
Klaatu : 5/5/2016 1:31 pm : link
And also intrigued that they had him lined up in the slot at mini-camp.
He's
AcidTest : 5/5/2016 1:38 pm : link
one of many guys competing at his position. The only “locks” at safety are Collins and D. Thompson. He does have length, and is a draft pick. Reese has said that they give draft picks every chance to fail. So assuming he hasn’t lost any of his speed from the achilles tear, his chances are good, but it’s certainly not a given.
Closest recent parallel for the Giants was Andre Brown in 2009-2010.

That ended poorly. But every injury is different.
I think his flexibility to also play CB
Matt M. : 5/5/2016 1:49 pm : link
gives him a slight advantage when it comes to roster decisions. But, it doesn't guarantee a spot, let alone a starting spot.
Good thing for Mykkelle
David in LA : 5/5/2016 1:50 pm : link
is that he suffered his injury while he's really young.
My guess he's put on the IR

He's got Thompson and probably Jackson (if healthy) ahead of him.

Why put him on IR? He's already out there, running around, which is something Jackson isn't doing yet. He can play FS or CB, not to mention special teams. Seems like a good guy to have around.

I'm guessing this will happen around the time of cuts.
In this passing era
Coach Mason : 5/5/2016 2:32 pm : link
The number of DBs utilized both on roster and in %of packages are going up while 3 LBS out there on any given play is going down.

I could see Landon playing that Hybrid LB/SS role and being excellent at it. The key factor is do we finally get a guy (or two) that can take over the FS role on this team and do well at it?
Has a Chance
Samiam : 5/5/2016 2:39 pm : link
Fast and tall plus if he's playing the slot too, he'll be able to back up several positions. I think I read last year that he was a very good ST player. Assuming he's recovered from the injury, I think he has a good chance to make the team and contribute. That said, I never saw him play and neither did the guys who see him as getting cut early either

Okay, but why?

Bennett Jackson is the guy from that joke that I think will carve out a role in this secondary.

With Darian Thompson onboard it could happen. Jackson's AA and their supposed belief in his versatility are vital for him to make this roster.

M. Thompson is the only DB to play corner, slot corner, strong safety and free safety in college. He has the most realistic chance to make the cut not name Collins and D. Thompson. Before his injury he showed enough to work against the 1st at FS and apparently had better coverage than Collins. People forget that Collins wasn't having that great of a camp.

Thompson, who was showing potential in coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s system, is likely going to need surgery.

I'm surprised at all the love for Deayon today....Dude is 5'9", 155 lbs, how much of an impact do you expect that guy to have at this level?

You do realize you can't just put players on IR, right? They have to actually be injured, even if minor, otherwise the team is forced to waive the player if they pass a physical.

Deayon is a dynamic playmaker that may just play himself right onto the 53 as the Giants slot corner. The kid can flat out ball.

Very likely way too small to play the larger outside receivers but high end he could be a guy to shut down the jitterbug slot receivers. A shutdown slot corner has plenty of value.
I think he will be the first guy cut
PatersonPlank : 5/5/2016 6:03 pm : link
He wasn't that good in college and was projected as a UFA by all experts. He wasn't even the best DB on Texas. This was such a reach even Mykkele was shocked when he got drafted. A wasted pick.

Who was lining up with the ones when camp began, after looking real good in the Spring. I think he sticks.

That's one way to look at it... The other is the Giants drafted 2 DBs since then and added 3 or 4 DBs as UDFA's.

M Thompson is in no way a safe bet to secure a roster spot on the 53.

There's no room in the secondary for two Thompsons.
the giants use
msh : 5/5/2016 9:49 pm : link
some 3 safety packages which helps his chances but you could infer from the fact they took another FS this draft they are not confidant about him, seam to remember he was expected to be an UDFA when reese drafted him so we will see and that was before the injury also

M. Thompson started at FS in the first preseason game on August 14, where he got hurt. The Giants signed Brandon Meriweather two days later. After a very good Spring, Thompson had already eclipsed both Bennett Jackson and Cooper Taylor on the depth chart.

Jackson got hurt in the second preseason game, on August 22 (along with Justin Currie). A week later the Giants re-signed Stevie Brown, and then cut him a week after that and re-signed Craig Dahl.

My memory isn't completely clear on this but not so sure this is accurate.
my recollection
fkap : 5/6/2016 12:31 pm : link
is that he was having a very positive camp last year, and many here said "oh shit" when he went down.

At this point I don't think the odds are for or against him. He has a reasonable opportunity to make the team if his health is good.
Let's see a couple of these guys stay healthy
