Whay are so many fans down on Rashad Jennings?

kinard : 5/5/2016 2:59 pm
I was reading that thread today about the FA running back Coprich we signed and noticed a lot of Jennings bashing. I just don't get it...

Last we saw him he was running up and down the field against the Eagles for 170 yards. In fact in the last three games when Coughlin finally decided to stop splitting carries between 3 guys, he averaged almost 6 yards a carry and over 100 yards per game.

Yeah I know he turned 31 in March but age isn't the relevant stat - it's how much tread he has on tires (i.e., attempts). There are actually 30 active RBs in the NFL with more carries than Jennings (for example Mark Ingram, 26, has the same number of career carries).

Nothing was more infuriating last year than Jennings having a good series or two and then Coughlin pulling him off the field for Andre Williams.

He runs, catches and blocks well and he's a good guy in the locker room.

He'll be the perfect mentor for Paul Perkins, who should keep a close eye on #23 to see what it takes to be the consummate pro running back.

Leave my man alone already!

I agree with everything you are saying but don't think that many fans

are down on him. He's a big back and tough player who gives it his all. He is a very solid RB when you actually block for him.

I am happy with him as the Giants starter.
Totally agree
Lionhart28 : 5/5/2016 3:04 pm : link
He is solid. He isn't great at anything but can do everything pretty well. Plus, it seems likely Williams won't make the team, that would make Jennings our only big back. I think he's just about a lock to make the roster.

Jennings is our best RB....but he is on the wrong side of 30

Kind of a plodder these days…..
Simms11 : 5/5/2016 3:19 pm : link
nothing special, but he is still a solid veteran presence and will give us a solid, unspectacular running game. He's also oft-injured and on the wrong side of 30, which is generally death for NFL running backs.
I'm not down on him
Bill L : 5/5/2016 3:19 pm : link
The question was more along the lines of who does Perkins and Coprich replace (assuming that they replace anyone). I don't think there's much that separates any of the current backs (except for Rainey) to automatically exclude Jennings from a pick. They're all pretty pedestrian, IMO.
Nobody is "down"
Doomster : 5/5/2016 3:21 pm : link
on him.....it's just that what he may have done, in the last three meaningless games, he did because he was well rested(due to RB by committee), against defenses that had played all year.....

If he was given that work load, from game one, he would never have lasted the season.....

He was the best starter on the team last year.....but that is not saying much, because he was the only starter on the team last year.....he should be used as the first guy in, to give the starter a breather..........right now, I would be willing to give Perkins that shot, even as a rookie....he is another year older, and can be a spot starter in a pinch, due to injury.......but not from game one, on.....he just wouldn't last....
They shouldn't be. He is fine for us and we got basically
Jimmy Googs : 5/5/2016 3:27 pm : link
what was expected. It will be nice to have his string work ethic past onto our new rookie RB so that he is blended into gameplan early and often.

His workload has to be managed to keep him on the field. And although he isn't notably a fumbler, his few fumbles seem to come at the worst possible moments.

I saw him get stronger and more effective as last season progressed. That said he isn't a 'bell cow' back. He has the ability to be the lead guy in a rotational situation at best.

mmmm i will disagree i dont think he is a top 15 RB in the NFL all things considered. IDC what he did in a few meaningless games, he is an average back at BEST. i would be willing to argue that there are 20 teams that have a better day 1 starter. Im not saying he stinks and cut him but he is just a bland RB and in the NFL you need playmakers at those skill positions. Personally i wouldnt mind one bit if perkins was giving the starting job, in fact i would be more excited to see what he has as opposed to jennings.

To be fair, in a 32 team league being average is pretty close to a top 15 back. If you're 15th.
Sign me up for Jennings

for 15-17 carries per game and Vereen/Perkins for the rest. Williams can take a hike.

good point but he didnt say 15th best he said top 15, im saying at best 16th and as i mentioned id argue he isnt top 20.
i would take elliot over him by alot lol
The key with Jennings
ryanmkeane : 5/5/2016 3:45 pm : link
is to stay healthy - he really hasn't shown any ability to play a full season.

He's a solid vet
UConn4523 : 5/5/2016 4:00 pm : link
a hard worker and a model citizen, a guy you just love to have on your team. That said he's getting old and i'd love an injection of new talent with him as the RB1 and mentor.

Vereen is awesome but he should really be used sparingly in the running game. Get him the ball in space and out of the slot.
He was criticized last year for no good reason
mfsd : 5/5/2016 4:04 pm : link
In apparently an effort to keep him fresh, he was used sparingly more often than not, which led to him staying fresh, but finally admitting he needs the ball on the regular to get in a groove.

Once that happened late in the season, he was one of our best players on the field.

And no, he's not a 30 carry per game back...nor even 20 on average...but there is zero reason Andre Williams should be taking carries from him, that's what Vereen and now Perkins are for.

The difference in vision and ability to find creases in traffic between Jennings and Williams is night and day.
He should be our starting running back and get the bulk of the carries
Ira : 5/5/2016 4:15 pm : link
but it is time to bring along a young rb like Perkins to be ready to take over when Jennings does start to show age and his productivity decreases. I don't completely agree that mileage is the only factor and age doesn't matter. I think they're both factors.
No problem with him just Jerry and Whitlock run blocking
Mason : 5/5/2016 4:16 pm : link
both are pretty horrible at it.
What sucks it I really like Andre Williams
UConn4523 : 5/5/2016 4:17 pm : link
probably more as a teammate than an actual player. But he just isn't dynamic and I don't think he's any better than anyone else in short yardage.
Average
rocco8112 : 5/5/2016 4:17 pm : link
at best.

Nice big play in the Buffalo game this past season. I am hard pressed to remember any other big time plays. Well that blocked punt was cool.

Seems slow, does not really power over defenders, scares no D catching the ball out of the backfield. Does not appear to be elusive.

Does not get in the end zone when the field shrinks. Of course the o line plays a role, but still.

A grade him a C back. I could not off the top of my head name 15 guys better, but I doubt he is a top fifteen back.

Because
emobj999 : 5/5/2016 4:18 pm : link

Being down on Jennings, imo, has more to do with his ability to stay on the field and not his talent. I think he's as solid as most NFL backs that have success.

He reminds me of Kennard...hard to get too excited about them in 2017 knowing their injury history. I'm glad they have Perkins to back him up and Goodson for that matter.
