NFT: restaurant or must-see recs for Alabama/Louisiana trip?

TJ : 5/5/2016 3:58 pm
I'm headed to Mobile AL for a few days. Then a day on the north shore of Lake Ponchartrain and a day in New Orleans. I've been to a few of the well known french quarter stops but if anybody knows of any less famous spots I might try I'd appreciate it.

to Cochon while in New Orleans. Absolutely delicious.
the USS Alabama is a fun tour

There are good restaurants in Mobile, but nothing that New Orleans isn't going to top, so I wouldn't go out of my way for anything there. A lesser known place I like in New Orleans is Superior Seafood and Oyster Bar. It's not in the Quarter, it's in the Garden District right by the trolley.
Florabama

Thank me later.
Not sure of the time constraints, but

I love to visit Ft. Morgan and then take the ferry across Mobile Bay. Before hitting Ft. Morgan, grab lunch at LuLu's in Gulf Shores. Walk off lunch by visiting Ft. Morgan. Take the Ferry and scoot up to Hwy 90 and skirt the shore through Mississippi. If you have time and are interested, Beauvoir, Jeff Davis' home, is in Biloxi. After Waveland, Hwy 90 will take you back to I10.
As someone who lived in the Pensacola/Baldwin County area for years

I never got the big appeal of Flora-Bama. Place is a dump. There are better beach bars, although not in that same area (gotta go to Pensacola Beach for them).

If you were going to go all the way out to Fort Morgan and all the nothing around it, why not head east instead and drive onto NAS Pensacola? You can see Fort Barrancas there, which is pretty much exactly the same as Fort Morgan, and then go to the Museum of Naval Aviation too.

If you do happen to go into Pensacola, there are some very good restaurants there - I'd recommend The Fish House, McGwire's, Global Grill, or Jackson's if you want a fancy dinner. Flounders on Pensacola Beach is a great place, too.
I didn't recommend it highly enough before

The Museum of Naval Aviation is fantastic. You can take a virtual tour at their website, linked below.

The number of bands and bars and females were exceptional.
eh, give me Bamboo Willie's any day over Flora-Bama

Although I do admit again that the two are nowhere near each other.

All the other places I used to hang out at back in my Pcola single days are now gone, sadly. RIP Trader Jon's.

I second this. But Peche is my favorite in NOLA. One of the best restaurants I've ever been to. Jacque Imos also is very very good.
Funny to get on BBI and read about these places I've known forever

But let me add that you should not miss lunch at Wentzell's Oyster House in Mobile. When the NFL teams are in town for the Senior Bowl every year, they always hit Wentzell's hard. Awesome seafood and especially oysters. Walls are covered in signs with funny sayings. Also over by the men's room on the wall in the hall, you can spot a group pic of the NYG scouts from I think 2006.

In Perdido/Gulf Shores, I'd skip FloraBama, too. Pretty dumpy, IMO. But the Gulf Shores Steamer and Original Oyster House are mainstays. Agree the ferry between Fort Morgan and Mobile is cool, too.

In MS, on the gulf coast, we have lots of restaurants, casinos and museums.

Sounds like you have New Orleans covered.

Enjoy!
Alabama... hmmmm

I love the fried crab claws at Sea and Suds. Lambert's in Foley is a fun experience. The food isn't anything special, but it's good Southern cooking, the famous throwed rolls and apple butter are tasty, and you definitely get your money's worth.
thanks for the reccomendations

Until I read these I hadn't even noticed how close pensacola is. I'm thinking a trip down the west side of Mobile Bay, take the ferry to Fort Morgan, drive along gulf shores, stop at one of the beaches, maybe dinner in pensacola then back would make a pretty full day.
I'll definitely check out Wintzell's because I'll be around Mobile for a few days.
Eating in NOLA, like in NYC, is always a really tough choice. Way too much good food, way too little time.
