NFT: NFT: Going to New Orleans for trade show.. places?

Shockwave : 5/5/2016 5:27 pm
Going to a trade show and leaving next weekend. Needless to say my hotel is on the corner of bourbon street / Crown Plaza so that will keep me busy for a few nights!

The trade show is basically across the street from the superdome, I'll plan on walking from the hotel to there as its only about a 10 minute walk apparently.

Any places that must be checked out while down there that's not to far?

Walk down to French Market for some cool outdoor shopping

from local vendors. Can haggle on prices. Fun stuff.

I love the little corner restaurants in the Quarter, especially Cafe Pontalba on Jax Square and Maspero's over by the police station. Aquarium of the Americas is fun if you have time. Also antique shopping on Magazine Street.

Have fun!
Go to Bourbon Street

for about two hours. That's all you need. It's a shitshow.

Spend the rest of the time on Frenchman Street where the real music, vibe and local scene is - The Spotted Cat, The Maison, Snug Harbor, Blue Nile, etc. - you won't be disappointed. Plus you'll probably see a local street band which is a truly great experience - if you're really lucky you'll catch Yes Ma'am.

Trust me. You'll be happy. Also second Mothers.

If you have a chance go to the WWII museum. It's awesome.
You don't walk in New Orleans (from Bourbon to the Dome).
Giants2012 : 5/5/2016 6:53 pm : link
unless you want trouble to find you. Take a cab.

As others have mentioned

Cochon, WWII Museum, Frenchman Street, French Market. Masperos is good as is Royal House. Walk down Royal Street during the day and listen to the street musicians. Another place to eat is Jacques-Imos, Port o Call for a good burger. If you're there on a Tuesday night get to the Maple Leaf for Rebirth Brass Band. Plenty to do there, I love that city.
If you are going to the WW2 museum,
Diver_Down : 5/5/2016 7:11 pm : link
then don't miss the Confederate Memorial Hall which is across the street from the back-side of the WW2 museum. In my opinion, Confederate Memorial Hall should be a must see on any trip to New Orleans. Also, Mother's is a must eat.
Must get
BigBlueDownTheShore : 5/5/2016 7:14 pm : link
A handgernades from tropical island. However that should be the last drink of the night.

Do not tell anyone where you "got your shoes".

If you have a chance to go outside of the tourist zone go to Dragos seafood restaurant for some great food.

Also you have to get a poboy somewhere.

Beware of the hooker scam. If you get to fucked up they will scoop you into a car and ask you to pay for a tank of gas and boom they already have your wallet. Happened to 2 guys on my bachelor party this past year.
Thanks for he suggestions

I'll look a few of them up while I'm down there

As far as the town itself i think i should be good, grew up on the streets around here and caused much trouble myself when younger ;-). Sadly some of my friends never grew up so I still am around a lot of that street mentality every couple weeks.

Should be interesting...

New Orleans street crews

are different than any other city's. I've seen tourists straight up rolled on Canal because they wouldn't pay after the "Shoes" scam. I'm talking about beat the fuck up, robbed, and beat again at like 7p in the middle of crowds.

You get off the beaten path, hear some creole, you're getting fucked with.

And sometimes the cops are worse. I've seen cops absolutely obliterate people, arrest them AND rob them before stuffing them in wagons.

Don't bring the "I'm a city boy" shit attitude down there. You will get it.

And I'm there 6-8 times a year. Plus my trips to BR, the coast, Shreveport, Alex, and the prisons.

Go easy man, travel in groups. Keep your head down and don't talk to strangers.

My typical recommendation on these threads is K-Pauls.

Have always said it was one of the best meals of my life.

But B 's perspective have put a damper on this! No offense intended.
Sorry

It's not about the city being a terrible place. Any city has its issues. I'm just saying, be really careful. It's a place where excessive drinking, partying, gambling, stripper tipping, eating and escapism is not only well accepted but encouraged. Out in the open, without impunity. Big time. It is not Vegas plastic town. Makes for some really easy marks. And the local folks know it. Just watch your shit, keep your mouth shut and watch each other's backs. You'll be fine.

And yes. K-Paul's is absolutely fucking ridiculous.
Looks like it's a 7 minute walk to K-Pauls from the hotel..
Shockwave : 5/5/2016 9:37 pm : link
Should I run? Lol

Pretty sad if that's the state of the city.
Haha
B in ALB : 5/5/2016 9:54 pm : link
You're fine to walk. Just keep it inside the lines. You'll be fine. Just don't be a tough guy wise ass.

Get your Huge Ass Beers, go to Penthouse, hit the casino, maybe jump on tthe Mississippi Queen, grab a spot overlooking the river for crawfish and beer, cafe du monde, crazy fortune telling in Jackson Square, do a cemetery tour, Hotel Monteleone's bar, fried oysters and beer, Abitas until you can't walk, Cochon, Mothers for lunch, and get outside the city on a Thursday or Friday night for some sweaty music with some beautiful LA women.
Used to go to Big Easy ....

... a couple of days before Christmas (we stopped in NOLA on our way to Arlington TX where one of my daughters live). We walked to K-Paul's, too, with no problems. K-Paul's was just as fantastic as the only other time I was there 25 years ago.

Enjoy!

All the places mentioned

and advice so far is spot-on, however, even if it's not as renowned as some spots like K-Paul or Cochon, the chargrilled oysters at Acme Oyster House are one of the few foods I've craved to the point I booked an extra night in New Orleans "to make flight times work" after a business trip in Baton Rouge. Normally I get home as soon as possible from business travel. And of course a night out on New Orleans is never bad (I haven't had any bad experiences there, but I am sure it happens). I'm also not a douche bag though.

Cochon has similar oysters, but not as good.

Was at K-Paul's last year and it was awesome

I go every time in NOLA and it's consistently awesome. However, I did go to Commander's Palace for the first time and I thought it was better. Mother's is still my favorite overall but obviously it's not the same thing. When we went last year, it was for a marathon and my wife wanted pasta. So we went Italian which is not something I would normally think to do in NOLA. We went to Domenica and ti was outstanding. Went to Dragos for grilled oysters, which were fine, but overall I didn't think Dragos was that great a place.
Gotta stop by Manning's
BigBlue in Keys : 5/6/2016 1:13 pm : link
We saw Archie there, he gave my friends wife a hat. Nice guy.

Decatur is a fun street during the day. Less touristy than Bourbon. As mentioned some great music on Frenchman st. at night.

The Alibi is a cool local dive just off Bourbon on Iberville. Cheap drinks, good food. Acme Oyster house is a must, from a guy who knows fresh seafood.

And missed PJ's description of the charbroiled oysters from Acme. He is right on, they are just out of this world. I could eat 2 dozen right now!

I arrive about 12:30pm Saturday, then a buddy from work arrives a few hours later. I imagine we will check out the hard rock first as its right next to the hotel I'm at( he is staying at the ritz, I chose not to as I wanted to be closer to everything)

Ive played guitar for about 25 years so the music will definitely interest me
