It was a strike. The ball catches the front corner of the plate on the 3rd base side. It looked worse than it was. But did catch the front corner.

I was talking about the strike out pitch. McCann did an awful job framing the pitch before but it caught some plate.

MLB will do everything possible to protect Papi on his farewell tour. As it should be IMO.

Broke the 86-yr curse. Earned his place in baseball history. Still might get a game or two suspension (2 reduced to 1, maybe) for tantrum tonight though.

McCann was crossed up. Gamecast had that pitch in the strike zone.
Somebody was questioning

strike three on Ortiz? He was so cranked there was no way he could the bat off his shoulder.
Why was Farrell still in the dugout? He was thrown out of the game and came out of the dugout after fatso got tossed.

Pitch F/X on Ortiz At-Bat FYI
guitarguybs12 : 5/6/2016 10:34 pm : link
1st was obviously a strike, 2nd was technically a ball, but that gets called a strike all the time

Why should they protect Ortiz ??
djm : 5/6/2016 10:35 pm : link
So he's off limits but every other player is open season?

Ortiz has probably had the biggest impact on MLB the last 10 years. I hated and still hate the witch hunt that selig facilitated but if any player should be examined thoroughly it's Ortiz.

Fuck David Ortiz. He's a fraud. I'll never believe anything else.

Your opinion (and mine). But it's not where McCann catches it, its where it crosses the plate.

You cannot look at a pitch that close after showing up the ump. You know anything close was going to be a strike.

But as I said earlier, why was Farrell still in the dugout? He should get a couple games suspension.

Old news. I really don't know what happened. Maybe you do. Or not.

Either way, that isn't happening.

Do you think he'll get suspended a game or two for tonight? I'd do it I think if it were my call, but I think MLB will want to protect him if they can.

Didn't quite lose it like he did the time he destroyed the telephone. But pretty outrageous nonetheless.

Scary for kids I think.

Ask the other steroid users if it is old news. Ortiz was named as a user and didn't even need to due an apology like Pettite to get a free pass. In fact, he pulled the Sosa denial strategy. They laughed and badgered Sosa - but Big Papi? The fuck can bust up dugouts and act like a maniacal jackass and that just him being passionate for the game.

Home plate umpire
blueblood'11 : 5/7/2016 7:19 am : link
Had some rough spots last night for sure. There were balls he called strikes that looked to be off the plate and then there were a handful of pitches that were so in the strike zone but he called them balls. There was a handful of times Pineda looked in at the ump in disbelief. I can recall at least a half dozen times saying to my wife where the fuck was that pitch.

When Betances struck out Ramirez with his slider McCann caught the ball well off the plate but the question was did it clip the plate before McCann received it. The overhead replay had it a tick off the plate but I guess to Ron Kulpa's eye it caught some of the plate.

How often do you hear it said that because the catcher was set up on one side of the plate but the pitcher missed the catchers target and even though it got a lot of the plate on the other side the umpire called it a ball. Not all umpire work that way. It's where the ball crosses the plate and not where the catcher receives it.

It looked as bad as anything but that ball had plenty of the plate and credit Kulpa for not being afraid to call it that way. Shoot, the 2-1 pitch he called a ball was practically right down Broadway. Miller even questioned it. And Papi's check swing may have been called a strike if it were the likes of Gregorious at plate.

I'm not telling you guys who to like or hate on your own team, but players having been grab-assing before the game for years (and it does bother me too - especially the joking on the bases - you get to 1b and you have to converse with the 1b), but it knows no bounds. Almost universally you hate the other team more than the players do.
