What if Johnathan Hankins has a Pro Bowl season?

Klaatu : 5/12/2016 1:08 pm
We've been speculating about JPP's future in another thread, so I'd like to hear some opinions about Hankins' in this thread.

Will he be just another DT the Giants let walk after his rookie contract is up, or will they make every effort to re-sign him? He regressed in 2015 after playing very well in 2014, and he's coming off of a torn pec (which required surgery), but I'd like to think that he and Snacks could make a pretty formidable duo up front, at the point-of-attack, where defense begins.

So, let's hear it.
If he's too good, he'll get a ton of money from the rest of the league

I thought it was interesting the Giants actually didn't draft an heir apparent.

When Linval was in his walk year, they drafted JH. You cannot say Bromley is his replacement.

Perhaps now that they have Harrison, they'll say they don't need Hankins and continue the endless search for that quick-step penetrating DT they've been longing for.
I'll be happy

Tough decision

They have to think about all the other big contracts coming up in 2017 & 2018. I'd really like to keep Hankins if he plays well but understand managing the cap is always a PITA.

Wish we could have kept Cofield & Linval also.

Too many factors

Always they're faced with finite resources. Maybe JPP has a great year and they prioritize signing him and that leaves little for Hankins.

If he has a probowl year i think we go to the superbowl and that's all I'd worry about now.

Incidentally, I think POTENTIALLY, this might be the best tackle tandem I've seen since Modoleski / Grier and maybe better than. Better than Colefield Robbins too.
And I also think this front four won't play together long enough to be historic, but they have a chance to be superb... Really really good.

Looking forward to seeing our Dline vs. Dallas Oline.

Same here. But I have no doubts Romo won't be sitting there for 13 seconds anymore.
I get the impression that one reason we're sitting on

so much cap space is because the Giants expect to be active extending some of their own in '17. Specifically, Hankins, Pugh and Richburg. Granted, it takes two - so if someone comes in with what the Giants deem unreasonable contract demands, they'll end up in the open market trying to gauge price, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of extensions forthcoming this season.

I think this is exactly what is going on. Remember, back before the 2007 championship season, the Giants were able to identify some of their young core players and lock them up prior to free agency. They did it with Tuck, Osi, and Snee. I have to think they are setting up for the same with a select few players who deserve it, and Hankins is one of them.
Hankins is a goner

There is almost no scenario in which I can see him returning.

The Giants can't continue to draft good players and continue to watch their top tier talent walk out the door for nothing...makes no sense especially considering they have like 28 million in cap space projected for next year...probowl talent doesn't grow on trees...its simple if he performs pay him...and make up for it by reallocating from other salaries from players that are not performing as well...the Giants need a core of young talented core players that have to be maintained...if Hankins performs he needs to be added to our "must have" group..
Assuming

Harrison stays healthy and they have someone like Vernon on the edge, a pass rush DT will be slightly easier to find. They'll get 1 on 1 situations. Still love Big Hank and he is a good run stopper, too.
extend him now
rasbutant : 5/12/2016 2:15 pm : link
the arrow is pointing up for the kid. Sign him to big salary lower guaranteed now.

That's how I would run the club. Sign your best players one year early, let the aging players go one year too soon.
The counter arguement
rasbutant : 5/12/2016 2:19 pm : link
I guess is if its between signing him or Wilkerson, and cost is about the same, who do you pay? Assuming he has pro bowl season.
i would extend him now
msh : 5/12/2016 2:42 pm : link
hopefully thats what they think if not someone say to him what happened to all the other DT that left the giants the last few year the grass was far from greener elsewhere especially cofield who should have stayed at least linval left the division

i hope the fact they didnt draft another DT means they intend to keep him if possible
Damon Harrison moves over

if Hankins leaves IMO
Hankins is a good player but far from great. Don't presume
Jimmy Googs : 5/12/2016 3:41 pm : link
we cannot afford his next contract, possibly with ease.

BleedBlue : 5/12/2016 4:57 pm : link
he is good, he will be a giant. We have the money and his contract isnt going to be out of control...if it is let him walk sign wilkerson :P
Question is, did he play poorly
Doomster : 5/12/2016 5:33 pm : link
last year, because of the company around him, or has he plateaued? He has players to the left and right of him now.......that should make life, for him, a little easier this year...
IMO
Jay on the Island : 5/12/2016 5:57 pm : link
You should keep your best players regardless of whether or not you are paying another player along the line a lot money. If Hankins plays like he did two years ago I am fine giving him a contract that averages 7-9 million annually. I am tired of seeing the draft picks we hit on walk after their rookie deals. The Giants have a good chunk of cap space available now that will be carried over to next years cap. The Giants need to focus on extending Hankins and Pugh this offseason.
I think he's

Gone anyway! The only person we may keep us JPP and that's depending on what type of deal he gives us ... Should he play well.
I thought he
Glover : 5/12/2016 11:47 pm : link
would be a breakout player last season. Hopefully he can be a solid player, maybe a bit more, but I'm not counting on him making it a no brainer decision for the Giants to re-sign him. To get resigned by the team that drafted a player it seems you either have to be so good they have to pay top dollar to keep you, or just not good enough for other teams to be all that interested, in which case they sign a team-friendly second contract for a solid, but unspectacular player.
Hank is Capable IMO
Bluesbreaker : 5/13/2016 12:46 am : link
I would say they Keep Him he does have some
pass rush presence . He will be a Pro-Bowler
If JPP regains enough grip to finish off tackle
attempts .
That and the Addition of Harrison were gonna be a Tough
out .
Easy
The Tempest : 5/13/2016 10:39 am : link
He gets a bonus. Sadly I don't think it will help him remain a Giant. Reese has shown little interest in retaining defensive tackles.
