Giants.com: Oklahoma OC Lincoln Riley breaks down WR Shepard

Oklahoma OC Lincoln Riley breaks down WR Shepard - ( New Window )
I listened to that yesterday
YANKEE28 : 5/13/2016 8:38 am : link
An interesting point is that several years ago Lincoln Riley was coaching at East Carolina and had Dwayne Harris for one year. In that one year, Harris caught over 100 passes and Riley called him one of the toughest guys he ever coached.

Regarding Shepard (which is the majority of the interview), he says a ton of things that should have Giants fans excited about # 87.
after listening to that interview
gidiefor : Mod : 5/13/2016 8:53 am : link
and everything else we've seen and heard about this kid -- I am wondering how in the heck did he make it out of the first round?
Great interview. We're going to be very happy with this player.
Ira : 5/13/2016 9:13 am : link
With him and Beckham on the field, defensive coordinators are going to tear their hair out. A healthy Victor Cruz will be like icing on the cake.
with all the accolade on Shepard
Andy in Boston : 5/13/2016 9:29 am : link
makes you wonder how Doctson and Corey Coleman were ranked ahead of him...even Treadwell. He seems to have it all. Speed, quickness, route running, physicality, intangibles.

Big Rick in FL : 5/13/2016 9:38 am : link
The only reason he wasn't a 1st rounder is because he's only 5'10.

I've watched every single video I could find on him since he's been drafted. The guy is an absolute stud. I'd probably put him as the top WR in the draft. If he was 6 foot he would have been taken at 15 by the Browns.
If he was 6'1"
ANGPASS : 5/13/2016 9:57 am : link
He would be a top 10 pick in this draft.

- he is a thick WR
- He is a great route runner
- Good, big, strong hands
- Fast, quick
-Great with the ball in his hands

If you added 3 inches on him, he would be a top 10 easily.

I did want a taller WR for redzone purposes but i would take a great route runner with speed and hands over height any day.
being a long time sooner fan....
BCD : 5/13/2016 10:20 am : link
I saw all of his games at OU and he is one of my favorite players in college football.....boy it's great to have him on the Giants....my Giants! talk about cake and eating it too...wow.... wakeup BCD......
Am I wrong in comparing him to Steve Smith Sr.?
George from PA : 5/13/2016 10:25 am : link
Seems like the same skill set.....tough, great hands, etc.

41 inch vertical mitigates the height thing a bit as well.
He's better than Steve Smith
Phil in LA : 5/13/2016 10:31 am : link
Smith didn't get yards after the catch, and also couldn't seem to catch the ball, over his should and in stride. Sterling does both. Smith was a really useful possession receiver, but not explosive.
Shepard is more like Cruz
JonC : 5/13/2016 10:34 am : link
Explosive, excellent in small spaces, terrific hands, smooth, instinctive natural WR, should be a high YAC pro.

He would've been a top 25 pick if he were 6 foot.
If you were comparing the two, not knowing what we know now ...
Csonka : 5/13/2016 10:57 am : link
how would you compare Sheppard and Beckham Jr coming out of college? Similar size with big hands for sub 6'0" guys. Both very quick/fast.

What separated Beckham and made him such a high pick?
OB
JonC : 5/13/2016 11:01 am : link
Very explosive, huge and tremendous hands and catch radius when you factor in his leaping and gymnast-like body control. Elite playmaker and competitor, want-to is contagious and football teams require emotional leaders as much as pure physical talent.
Loved Shepard's
mrvax : 5/13/2016 11:17 am : link
highlight videos. He looks very exciting like a healthy Cruz or OBJ.

Can blow a game wide open.
Got to give Jerry Reese credit on high round WRs
Sly Guy : 5/13/2016 11:22 am : link
OBJ: 1st round
Steve Smith: 2nd round
Hakeem Nicks: 1st round

He has been hit or miss in the mid to late round WRs but I have complete confidence in him for the Shepard pick.

Bust is correct. But I believe Accorsi was the GM for that pick.

Size and lack of blazing speed. You have to have one or other other to go in the first.
I just think NFL teams overthought it
Big Rick in FL : 5/13/2016 12:16 pm : link
He ran a 4.48 which is plenty of speed. His measureables are basically the exact same as Odell. Odell has him in the 40. Shepard beats him in the vertical, broad & bench.

Ramses Barden, then. Jerrel Jernigan, too. Can't win 'em all.

Odell was faster and has crazy long arms which allow him to play much bigger than his size.

Plus you can watch his tape and see he's a special athlete. Shepard isn't.

Chris, your football/player knowledge is horrific. Stay out of this thread. Shepard is special. Dumbass.
Can't be a Good Pick
Samiam : 5/13/2016 1:29 pm : link
How come nobody traded up to get him in front of the Giants? Plus, he was mentioned to the Giants in several mocks and everybody knows the Giants reveal their picks.
Odell is an athletic monster
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/13/2016 1:32 pm : link
not everyone is Odell, and "Well Odell did it" is horrible reasoning.

I don't know anything about this kid. Hope for the best. Want his to succeed, but I see a select few people here writing him in for 1200 yards as a rookie. Calm down.

If Shepard is even slightly better than Randle this year, I'd be happy. Not all rookie WRs can enter the NFL and dominate in year 1.

This review makes Shepard seem like OBJ Jr. Very few weaknesses are cited and a plethora of strengths that should get any NY Giants fan excited to see this young man play.

Shepard Review - ( New Window )
hope OBJ and Shep are competitive with each other
SHO'NUFF : 5/13/2016 3:09 pm : link
to raise each other's game...but I hope they keep their egos in check so they don't clash. Shep seems humble and having Cruz to mentor the two will help.
If Shepard gets as many chances as Randle
Ivan15 : 5/13/2016 4:21 pm : link
He will have more catches (better effort, fewer drops), more yardage (better YAC), and more TDs than Randle had in 2015
Only concern I have
Torn Tendon : 5/13/2016 4:33 pm : link
is his love of the weight room. Don't want him to go all David Boston.
Lincoln Riley was coaching Michael Crabtree
BSIMatt : 5/13/2016 11:08 pm : link
During his record setting years at texas tech as well. He was the receivers coach.
I don't think it is overthinking it...
DonQuixote : 5/14/2016 12:26 am : link
He has longer odds to be successful than someone with the same skills and greater size. He sounds like someone that might achieve that, who knows.

It is also possible that people like OBJ change the way the position is defined. It happens, LT did it, and then you have to adjust.

If the Giants are successful with OBJ/Cruz/Sheppard, that challenges the conventional wisdom. I like to hope.
All three are great
Phil in LA : 5/14/2016 12:41 am : link
route runners, and that's how you win at WR if you also catch the ball, and all three can catch the ball, and then take off with it. Odell's a bit faster in shorts, but Shepard has all the explosion numbers. Odell has a better 3-cone, too. They are some pair, and both of them spoke of their admiration for Cruz when they were drafted.
A lot of people are gonna absolutely hate this kid.
madgiantscow009 : 5/14/2016 1:24 am : link
They live in Philadelphia, Dallas, and the Washington DC areas.
I think that Cruz (if healthy)
Giant John : 5/14/2016 5:48 am : link
Will in most cases be a check down or third option guy. The other two receivers are going to be that good. Having Shepard in the line up is going to put a lot of pressure on the d'backs. If Eli can stay healthy the passing game should be fun to watch.

As management has pointed out, especially with that vertical, he PLAYS much bigger. He may just turn out to be the steal of the draft.

I think he was referring to the Carolina/Baltimore Steve Smith.
