What a pathetic loser you are. Are you that unforgiving? The man was going through a personal crisis.
To a stupid article. The guy wants to coach and the age is just a number. He said himself "we'll see" and the fools bray about his "legacy."
You guys should worry about what happens here first with a raw rookie head coach who was never HC of a high school team let alone a professional team with a coordinator who thought he should be the HC, a shaky GM and a meddling owner.
more supportive of the Coach. But it was absolutely time for him to step away from the Giants' job. If he didn't think so, he may be just about the only person who feels that way.
However, I think anyone saying he shouldn't look to pursue doing what he loves is being pretty unfair. I don't know if he would have a chance to be a HC again (kind of doubt it), but I could see him working as a receivers coach, or something along those lines. I think he'd still be very effective somewhere, with a clean start.
I could much more easily see him in a front office position somewhere. That would make the most sense to me, maybe with an old-school organization such as the Steelers, Packers, for example.

not for nothing, but weren't you the one saying prior that once Tom was let go he'd be swooped up in 1-2-3?
at their facility? It was odd to begin with, it would be extremely odd if it continues.
I agree, it was always odd for him to still be hanging around the facility as long as he's looking and possibly interviewing with other teams.
I can see Tom being brought in by another franchise that needs a change in culture and attitude, whether as head coach or in a team president kind of role.
If that happens, I hope he succeeds, but also agree it was time for the Giants to move onto the next chapter
Will be allowed back in the stadium for Super Bowl anniversaries and the like. But if he is still interested in coaching he should not be around now.
Furthermore Aquidneck has it generally right. If the report of him shitting on the Giants during an interview process is true, it's fairly inexcusable.
Anyone who is out of work and looking for a job who trashes their former employer during the interview process is considered 'unprofessional'. Usually they have not benefitted from banking millions as Tom C has.
Don't know why this topic has such polarizing views. We can respect the job Tom C did for years here and also acknowledge he was part of the problem in recent years, and even if Reese may or may not have deserved to be canned it does not mean Tom C is justified or gets a pass in trashing the Giants.

What an amazing fucktard you are to attack anonymous strangers on the internet because they don't worship their sacred cows in the same way you do.
Let me rephrase my original post for you:
Good luck, Tom. Thanks for everything, but don't shit on the team in front of a (our biggest) rival organization if you want to remain on good graces going forward.
Too late? Well, fuck you.
Personal crisis. Pffft! The man is a millionaire thanks largely to checks he cashed from the NYG. No one in his family is dying. I'm not sympathetic.
the personal crisis comment had me laughing as well. He had a good run, much better than most. Everything comes to an end. No excuse for his jilted lover routine with the Eagles. I feel far worse for the fifty somethings making a living who won't get employed due to age.
to move into a front office position. He wants to be a head coach. At this point in his career he is not going to be a position coach, or likely go back to college.
It's time for the Giants to take his key to the facility away and wish him the best. The relationship was a good one, but it ran it's course and is over. Time for everybody to move on.
we both said IF he did indeed do that in the interview....so we are holding the possibility the article is just smoke no fire. There is no recording of an interview.
Irrespective, if Tom is indeed actively shopping for a job he should have his visitation privileges revoked.
When it s not your world that has been disrupted. You also don f seem to understand that the quality that won t allow her m to let go is the same quality that made him a great coach.

Yes, he was. And that has proven to be a truly idiotic response.
If I was one of those perennially bad teams in the NFL...
like St. Louis, Cleveland, Jacksonville, etc... I would absolutely hire Coughlin in any capacity I could to have him get them going on the right track.
The man's knowledge of the game is second to none, and he knows how to build a winning program, and has done it EVERYWHERE he has ever gone.
no doubt, but it doesn't excuse the vindictive bitterness against his long-time employer, and it doesn't make a good set-up if he wants anything to do with the Giants going forward unless by their invitation, in a role that can not in anyway be deemed a platform to undermine McAdoo, if such a role is possible.
Homer Jones:
You refer to a shaky GM, I agree, and would perhaps go further, as it largely his ineptitude that set up such a weak roster, which in turn did not make for an optimal last portion of TC's coaching career.
But if you can't see or accept that TC contributed more than his share of responsibility for the Giants' failings over the past few years, I don't know what to tell you: the handling of OBJ's meltdown, the end-of-game decision-making, the constant post-games excuses and blind spots, perhaps even personnel decisions (how can we know?): the body of work did not evidence a positive course going forward. I don't excuse Reese at all, far from it, but I there was no doubt it was time for Tom to go, two years ago really.
That he allowed or caused this exit to be saturated with bitterness and badmouthing is simply sad.
We all wish him the best going forward.
Came from worthless shit-stirrer Gary "Serby-lite" Meyers. I can imagine TC's jilting being evident, but if this story came from Meyers, it's likely way overblown.
He's already bored with his "other" life and doesn't know
what to do by 9am. Its probably tough on the guy since his whole life has been coaching, but doesn't justify the stupid criticisms on this thread (shocking for a BBI thread).
My guess is he won't find a coaching job (not in the NFL at least), but maybe some team picks him up as a consultant or advisor-type...maybe.
Wish he would get into more charity or speaking roles to fill up his time as the guy is just a heart of gold and you know has great stories to inform, educate and motivate.

Homer said the NFL would be put on hold as organizations would be fighting one another to see who can garner TC's service.
is to get a job with the league talking to the young players who are coming in. Maybe going around from team to team working with the rookies on all of those things that will help them to be successful and to keep them out of trouble.
Remember that video of Ray Rice telling the kids that that need to find a fall guy to take the blame when some stupid shit goes down? Well THAT right there is what needs to change and I can see Tom taking over that program and those discussions.
Is he is a Very respected Coach around the League

TC IMO is HOF Coach that managed to change his

I would love if he got one last shot with someone

...that not unlike all professional sports teams, the Giants fan base is loaded with complete and total idiots.
Dear Dad(RIP) "The problem with being a Giant fan is having to deal with Giant fans." You will get people who use Pisarcik and Willie Young in their handles. Andy Robustelli's reign as GM will be glorified. Allie Sherman will be deified. But win a Super Bowl? Win 2? Get ready to be pissed on and vilified. And that includes Parcells as well as Coughlin.

really believe Tom was "blindsided" by his firing? The entire staff was put on notice the past two years. Old Tom was almost fired they year before, when they decided that Perry Fewell would be the scapegoat. The writing was on the wall - PLAYOFFS OR HEADS WILL ROLL. Tom knew in the last few weeks he was coaching for his job. It was evident in the playcalling in the Jets game, when he went for the win instead of kicking the FG. That was so unlike TC's conservative ways. He was coaching for his life & it backfired. It was all over after the Jets game, IMO. The Maras hate losing to them.

My dad passed in '76. I was 8 when I became a fan at his knee watching the championship game against the Bears.
That was as good as it got for me & my dad with the Giants, but part of my affinity with the team to this day has do do with a lost connection with my dad.
Coughlin and Parcels will always be all-time heroes. My personal preference between the two had always been Coughlin because of the loyalty he had shown the organization.
Both Coughlin and Parcells all-time heroes, but that doesn't give them a pass to shit on the team in the present day (if that's what happened) or going forward.
The fact that he accepted an interview with the Eagles so soon after leaving the Giants certainly hints at a less than happy departure, an opportunity pursued out of bitterness. I don't know what was said in the interview. No one here does.
One thing for sure, these guys have relationships we don't really understand. Perhaps Mara encouraged him to work out as a peace offering. No clue.
Tom c can be both an all time great and a guy that definitely did not handle his business well with the Eagles interview and the hints of bitterness.
He won't get another gig as a head coach, but if he is willing to be a coordinator I can see him getting a gig yes.
As far as those lambasting idiots or describing others as idiots well I've learned those quick to judge or smear others should generally look in the mirror.
Ironically the premise is to treat Giant greats with respect yet they cannot treat fellow posters with respect.
There have only been two who coached into their '70s, George Halas and Marv Levy. They were both longtime coaches with their respective teams and both stepped down at 72.
Huff and puff all you want about "age is only a number", but it's clear NFL teams don't agree, which is why Tom Coughlin doesn't have a job and likely never will be an NFL head coach again.
really believe Tom was "blindsided" by his firing? The entire staff was put on notice the past two years. Tisch wanted him gone. Mara did not and thought he and TC together would make Tisch relent. TC didn't want to play and resigned. Call it what you want. The Eagles job was right geographically but wasn't otherwise. TC made the announcement that he wasn't interested.
At that point, the Eagles mentioned McAdoo which buffaloed ownership into handed him a contract and a pen without doing much if anything by way of due diligence, tried to hire an experienced head coach as a baby sitter, saddled him with a loser DC who was piqued at not being offered the HC job (always good to have a lieutenant who thinks he should have had the head job-no problems there), issued one of his famous ultimatums about the GM, and then coughed up $200 million to try and buck the whole thing up.
TC had it right in the article when he said "We'll see": we will see about a lot of things. I hope it all works out. Remember, many of you thought this was already a playoff team last season.
Gene's willingness to embrace his internal contradictions is nice

If Tom Coughlin wasn't interested in coaching Philadelphia, he wouldn't have interviewed in Philadelphia.
This is exactly what I meant by Coughlin fans skewing things to fit their own narrative. It's not possible that he didn't win the coaching job. He just decided he didn't want it, you know, after going through the interview process.
could talk some sense into TC. Maybe Tom should work with his agent to try and land a front office position. He proved last year that his facilities are diminished.
he has an appetite to do the college thing anymore, sucking up to kids old enough to be his great grandchildren to get them to play for his school likely loses its appeal. and given the 3 year time horizon, I don't think most colleges would want such a short term focus.
I can't blame him for wanting to work, it's not in his nature to just relax and sail into the sunset. I think he should be patient and try again next offseason and see what openings are available. but yeah I think it's unlikely he gets any offers, especially if he doesn't drop the bitter ex routine in his interviews.
by the way, this is the worst "resignation" I've ever seen. not even any pretense that it was his choice.

even if he had the "appetite for recruiting", are young players really going to buy what he's selling? His willingness to put in the work would only be part of the equation.
but the reason why TC is gone and Reese is not, is because ownership felt Reese was part of the solution as evidenced by 3 straight solid drafts in a row. I know we were stripped of talent due to injuries and a variety of other reasons, but Coughlin knew he was on the hot seat for 3 years now. YOu just have to trust Mara and Tisch, they see how personnel decisions get made up close and behind closed doors. It's pretty telling that they kept Reese, Spags, and McAdoo but asked TC to leave.
RE: Montana, we've gone back and forth on this all offseason

He's had this routine for a very long time - just stopping abruptly one day can't be easy.
I don't blame Coughlin for having hard feelings. I don't know how responsible he is for the Giants troubles the past few years, but it's definitely a sliding scale that starts higher than zero. It's possible that this roster was compiled and these issues encountered despite some very loud objections on his part, while it's also possible that some of the lack of player development and some of the input to roster compilation on the part of the coaching staff is very much to blame for where we've been the past three years.
Where I do blame Coughlin is for running directly to a division rival for a chat hours after he's dismissed. I think the Giants did him a favor by calling it mutual, and the way he returned that favor was to be on Philly's doorstep, offering up people who were still on our staff to join him. That's been confirmed in multiple places even if you discount Myers' article.
And for the last time - it's not his age. It's the combination of his age and recent results. The entire league saw OBJ implode on the field and his coaching staff did nothing about it, with the team's PR guy admitting that the HC wasn't sure what was going on and needed to have a tape of cutups made so that he could understand the severity. That was in plain sight - and not the best moment for TC. It's possible that he's run his course, it happens to everyone and there's no shame in it.
Players never know when to retire. Same as Boxers ... professional athletes never seem to know when to walk away. Why would a coach be any different ... even though he probably has all the money he will ever need (and then some?).
Guys like Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Donald Trump could have retired decades ago ... but, MONEY was never the end game. These type of guys (including Coughlin) ... LOVE WHAT THEY DO.

and 200M Dave..
Come on, cap space isn't the sole determining factor in why Reese was kept. YOu still have sour grapes over TC getting the axe.
it had nothing to do with giving games away, letting Odell lose his mind for an entire half, or being on the hot seat 3 years in a row, but mostly to do with having cap space. You don't think that reasoning sounds dumb at all?

Or a a defense that was patched together mainly because of shit draft picks
I guess it's easy to argue your point when you just choose to ignore every nuance involved as to why the defense was shit. Are you going to choose to ignore the games that the offense gave away on their own, or nah?
You been retired enjoy it.

Unless you're a TC fan, in which case he "turned the job down".

AZ coaching staff has 5 guys 68-78. Dick Jauron is 78 and DC in Tenn.
Reality: TC will likely NOT get a HC spot again, but he can try.
Age matters. The Eagles hired an offensive coordinator/rookie head coach who didn't even call football plays over Tom Coughlin.
Unless you're a TC fan, in which case he "turned the job down".
Every one of these threads has been a clinic on non-critical thinking.
Huff and puff all you want about "age is only a number", but it's clear NFL teams don't agree, which is why Tom Coughlin doesn't have a job and likely never will be an NFL head coach again.
We still have some talent gaps but really no more than any other NFL team. Plus, we have the QB. HC needs to make it happen.
That is a pretty freaking good idea

If Tom Coughlin wasn't interested in coaching Philadelphia, he wouldn't have interviewed in Philadelphia.
This is exactly what I meant by Coughlin fans skewing things to fit their own narrative. It's not possible that he didn't win the coaching job. He just decided he didn't want it, you know, after going through the interview process.
(Long Beach University), had a great time doing it.
That's what I'd do, if I were Tom.
even if he had the "appetite for recruiting", are young players really going to buy what he's selling? His willingness to put in the work would only be part of the equation.
Only if Mara had a guy in mind that would be a better GM.
and 200M Dave..
I don't think people like TC ever give up or let go to allow new blood to take over. But i think he should have stepped down years earlier.
I've always thought Army would be a great spot for him. I think Bobby Ross finished his career there.
Guys like Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Donald Trump could have retired decades ago ... but, MONEY was never the end game. These type of guys (including Coughlin) ... LOVE WHAT THEY DO.

but the reason why TC is gone and Reese is not, is because ownership felt Reese was part of the solution as evidenced by 3 straight solid drafts in a row. I know we were stripped of talent due to injuries and a variety of other reasons, but Coughlin knew he was on the hot seat for 3 years now. YOu just have to trust Mara and Tisch, they see how personnel decisions get made up close and behind closed doors. It's pretty telling that they kept Reese, Spags, and McAdoo but asked TC to leave.
and 200M Dave..
Come on, cap space isn't the sole determining factor in why Reese was kept. YOu still have sour grapes over TC getting the axe.
Or a a defense that was patched together mainly because of shit draft picks
