Zak DeOssie notices significant changes with Giants this spring - ( New Window )
What is interesting here

and if you read between the lines, what McAdoo is doing is he is paying attention to the fact that you need to adapt to the younger generation of players, particularly the Millennials, and when you realize that most teams are comprised of probably 90% who fall into this category, you need to be aware of what makes them tick.

Plenty of companies spent time and money on how to reach millennials and bring them into the work force, and the NFL would be no different.

The Giants played around with this last year, playing music at practice. I remember going to camp last year and hearing it and I thought it was for the crowd, but it was for the players, to help them focus. Coughlin did his part to work with it, but I'm sure this was not easy. McAdoo, as a young coach, with new ideas, could help embrace some of this change to deal with the realities of this new generation of players. With the music playing again this year. Changing the routine to keep players moving around, which isn't a stretch to see as a direct reflection sterotype of the lack of attention span among millennials. Let's hope this all works.

Hoping it translates to the game and the change is a positive one and shows with results

and listening to a speaker could be mind-numbing. I guess we'll see how it plays.

Tom seemed to fight valiantly to try to make the adjustments, of course.
Seriously?

The youth of today can't focus good unless they are listening to music? We truly are sissifying the country!

What happens when they don't play the music during the games?

Can't focus "well". You listening to music as you type?
I'm glad to read of more change than I expected
SwirlingEddie : 5/17/2016 1:04 pm : link
I anticipated, and feared, minor incremental changes because of McAdoo's experience under Coughlin and the long shadow and influence the former coach cast across the organization. But it appears that more than a little has changed, and that's a very good thing for this team.

I know! Whenever I see someone in the office or outside moving their lawn with headphones on listening to music, I run over, yank them out and ask them why they are such pussies.

I know I'm getting old when I can understand this sort of point of view.

At work they tend to play music...the younger folk want the music loud. Me myself,I want it off. I can't focus with the music on and they can't focus with it off.

It's not even so much as a lack of focus as much as it seems to help them loosen up.

I'm not even old and I feel a pretty significant gap between myself

Lack of attention span for a professional football player?
RetroJint : 5/17/2016 1:12 pm : link
Have you ever heard of Urban Meyer's, 4 to 6, A-B creed? It is very simple. A football play lasts from four to six seconds, as you move from Point A to Point B. You go as hard as you can on every play. He deals with millenials who have GPA's to worry about. If McAdoo can't get 4 to 6, A to B from his players, he is in for a short head-coaching career.

As for breaking up the drudgery of summer practice and keeping things short and snappy, yeah, we are all for that. However the practices are timed. The early part of camp involves 3 complete units plus stragglers being run in on an almost daily occurrence, trying to fit in on the depth chart.

Playing heavy metal to simulate crowd noise was a regular feature during the Coughlin years. And, as far as the dogmatic, old-school ways of the former HC, I think if anything he got too avuncular the last few seasons. Maybe he felt sorry for some of the overmatched athletes he had to coach, but I think it is a fair criticism to say they were too comfortable with him. Hence this change could do the returnees some good.

Mowing the lawn I can understand as the headphones drown out the loud lawnmower but I laugh every time I see kids these days so connected to their portable music devices walking down the street. They are never without them.

Heck I think it funny when you see the players getting on or off a team bus or plane as just about every one of them has their music going on in the their ears.
I think change can be a good thing

and if music makes the job easier, fine.

But it's pandering to immaturity. They know their audience and finding push-points to get results (from a morale angle).

Just don't tell me a 20 yr old today is different from a 20 yr old a generation ago.

The music seems to be a small part of the equation, I find this quote much more telling..
Quote:
"... we're kind of sticking and moving a lot more. We're not in our seats going through meeting material all day; sort of meetings on the field, back to the weight room, back to the meeting room, back to practice."
20 year olds themselves are not different
gidiefor : Mod : 5/17/2016 1:41 pm : link
the landscape they are raised in is -- this is a digital generation -- they communicate differently and they are affected by many more distractions and instant attention-getting devices then they were even 10 years ago

+1

I never could study or focus on any thinking / intellectual task with music on. Particularly music with any singing / lyrics.

And I seldom so anything without music. I constantly have my headphones in while doing things in the yard, or fixing this or that. Shoot, I even listen when I'm sitting at my desk doing paper work and the like.

I don't get the problem. It isn't such a big deal(at least I didn't think so).

Heck, I've eve been known to text people while sitting alone in public!

Taking plane rides is part of the pussification of America. Nicky takes cross country rides on a wagon being pulled by oxen like a true American.
I think there's a lot of wisdom...

- What McAdoo is doing. The less time you spend, sitting on your ass, the better your brain works.

i can see a direct benefit for football players, involved in a PHYSICAL sport. It's about think on your feet, in the game, not day-dreaming while the coach diagrams plays on the board.

Makes sense. You were about 16 when cell phones first started to become big and 25 when smart phones took off. So, you know what the world is like without these devices. 22 year old doesn't. They basically have been plugged in their whole lives.

Also, smart phones have made trendiness way bigger and more mercurial. So, if you are not friends with a bunch of 20 year olds, you are not going to be clued into what the latest rage is until it has probably become passé
Probably depends on the person

I almost never listen to music. Even when I have the radio on. When I do have music on, it's almost always background. Never in my life have I been able to make it the focal point and not do anything but listen. I suck at concert-going.
To be fair,
chopperhatch : 5/17/2016 4:24 pm : link
Despite all the talk of changing TC's system for something fresher, his team always played hard for him. They never quit even when staring at a playoff-less season, they played hard despite the lack of talent.

Regarding music during work/projects
chopperhatch : 5/17/2016 4:31 pm : link
I personally need it. Not because I'm addicted to technology, but it helps me focus. I have ADD and it's impact is significant. I stopped taking scripts for it because it's really not good to lean on a drug your whole life. I learned to cope with it and manage how I get things done. I listen to music to keep focused on certain tasks especially monotonous ones. But it has to be music largely without words. It keeps my mind from wandering and keeps me focused better than any amount of dexedrine ever did. Otherwise, I'll be all over the place when told to do something repetitive.

So I can understand the focusing aspects of music during practice. Especially stuff that's classical or electronic.

Lol, and I'm the exact opposite. Listening to jammy stuff or classical stuff, I subconsciously try to interpret where the song is going and discover new little bits about the piece that I hadn't before. My brain is wired so that I can do that while still being able to process the task I'm doing.

That's part of why I'm obsessed with The Disco Biscuits. Sometimes they will do a 30 min version of a song and I can just use that as a rhythm for my tasks. The whole time discovering new little aspects to the piece that I hadn't before.

Their "portable music devices" are their phones. Most people, regardless of generation, are never without their phone.

on the impact of music and the ability to work. The findings are pretty clear. People (of all ages) work better with music on.

There is a single caveat to this. The work must be work that does not require focused thinking. During focused thinking (problem solving, trying to understand new concepts) music has the exact opposite effect. It is virtually impossible to learn new concepts while listening to music.

In my experience as a teacher, students will voluntarily remove their music 100% of the time when they are sincerely trying to understand something new.
