The Rainman vs. Marshaun Coprich.

TC : 5/18/2016 11:35 pm
In another thread, someone was enthusiastic about Marshaun Coprich, and he's a nice young RB. But when I watched video of him I was struck by how he reminded me of a RB the Giants signed in the off season, Bobby Rainey. In school they were about the same size, but Rainey looks like he's gotten bigger since he's been in the NFL. And not only are they physically similar, but their running styles are also. But I thought that Rainey was better. So I went back and looked again, and I STILL do.

Three videos follow. The first is Rainey in school. The second is Coprich in school. And the last, Rainey in the NFL. And the last one arguably tells us most - it's the NFL.

See what you think. Not trying to dump on Coprich, but I liked Rainey out of school, and I still like him. He may just find a spot on the roster.

As I said when we signed him

Rainey is a better player then Andre Williams and it's not even close. He's a better runner. He's a far better pass blocker & receiver.

Rick, Rainey is also a much better STs player than Williams and has ties to new OC Sully from TB.

I kind of feel like Rainey is a bit underrated right now.

But he's a pretty similar back to Shane Vereen - who most obviously isn't going anywhere.

wasn't exactly a priority UDFA.

that said he's probably better than Andre Williams
Obviously finding a trade partner
Randy in CT : 5/19/2016 9:21 am : link
might not be easy, but perhaps we can trade Williams for a 7? 10? 18?
I'd accept a 6 pack of PBR and a bag of pork rinds...

... as fair compensation for Andre Williams.

I heard that a Williams trade is imminent.

I think. Some trade is imminent, even if it was reported that way 2 weeks ago....

Giants Insider.

Seems like a nice kid, and like he really loves the game.

I think this is a better Coprich

video. Primarily high angles.

Really shows his explosiveness.

RB competition should be fun to watch

I figured the Giants were content to go to camp with Jennings, Vereen, Williams, Darkwa and some UDFAs. Adding Rainey, Perkins and Coprich to the competition is pretty huge. Reese takes a lot of abuse around here, but he really added some good, young RB talent to the mix.
Training camp will sort all of this out

Ideally, neither of them makes the roster.
Big Blue Blogger : 5/19/2016 1:32 pm : link
Best case: Jennings and Vereen remain solid in their respective roles, Perkins gains playing time as the season progresses and either Williams regains a bit of his BC glory or Darkwa stays healthy and shows that his big drive against Dallas wasn't a total fluke.

Rainey is a nice insurance policy, but teams don't get better by using roster spots on 29-year-old journeyman backups. Coprich fits the Practice Squad profile going into camp. He will have to show the staff something special to make the 53.
Perkins
Randy in CT : 5/19/2016 2:36 pm : link
might just make the 53.
Poor Andre,

when I watch him play, I can't help thinking of Roberto Duran. Manos de Piedra.
Sounds great

Giants have some serious depth at RB. Jennings, Darkwa, Rainey, or Perkins could run for 1400 yards in Shanahan's Denver offense. Problem is the Giants dont block like those linemen did, so Vereen and Jennings can catch a lot of passes. Rainey can do that too. Nice stable of RBs. They just gotta block a little better and keep consistent with the run game and the back they choose to hand the ball to, and they can be markedly improved. I think it is totally possible, keep consistent with Jennings, play the others play in limited spots. That way the Giants can keep a consistent back who will react the same way to the blocking and get the most out of each play. If it turns out Jennings aint getting it done, you have other options, but they have to give Jennings the chance to find his groove with the O line, because the O line isn't going to be consistently opening up big holes that any back could run through.
Who's Coprich?
Darkwa
DavidinBMNY : 5/19/2016 10:17 pm : link
I am having trouble believing Darkwa can stay healthy. He is literally always hurt. He's a good player, and has the talent to stick and play in the league. It really comes down to durability and availability.

I think Williams has the leg up because he's a different style RB, he was drafted, and the Giants know he's a guy you have to make blocks for so he can get a head of steam.

The other way to look at it is Perkins backs up Jennings and Rainey backs up Vereen.
In an ideal world and if the Giants drafted well
BlueLou : 5/20/2016 4:25 am : link
the main RBs would be Williams and Perkins formining a Jacobs and Bradshaw redux duo.
And both Coptic and Rainey are not more than

Training camp fodder or STers.
